Chapter Nine

Savannah. Savannah. Savannah!

I jerked awake as the voice starting screaming at me. The first thing I noticed as I woke was the pounding in my head. I tried to rub my head, but found my movements restricted. As I looked down, I saw my wrists encircled by two metallic cuffs. What? I looked around my surroundings and found myself trapped in a cell. What happened? The last thing I remembered was burning up in the square. Or maybe that was a hallucination?

No, that was very much real.

I startled as the voice made a reappearance.

You hit your head when you passed out. While you were out, Rolland was easily able to take you to the palace. Which is what I was trying to get you to avoid in the first place.

So that bit makes sense. But what about the burning and the light that came from within me? How can that possibly be real?

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, but you have magic. That's why Rolland wanted to kidnap you in the first place.

I'm sorry, what? What do you mean you just forgot to tell me? How convenient that I suddenly have magic? If this was one of the books my dad made me read they would call this a deus ex machina, a god from the machine. Absolutely ridiculous.

Hush now. I know this is very abrupt, but there is a reason for all of this. Seeing as you aren't going anywhere I guess we have time for a story....

17 years ago, King Ashton and his father learned how to steal magic from people. At the time your parents were two leaders of a rebellion that aimed to overthrow the monarchy in order to establish democracy in Ostbourne. As leaders, they realized that they were two very valuable prisoners if they were found by the king. However, they wanted to make sure that their rebellion lived on. They quickly realized that this rebellion is doomed to fail if only one side had magic and the other didn't. So they tried to figure out how the king managed to steal magic and they managed to steal some and fled to the woods. However, last year, they realized that it was only a matter of time before they would be found. They decided their best hope was their oldest daughter, you. They transferred most of their power to you. Since your parents had were so powerful, the depletion of magic had consequences. Your father died in the process and your mother lost the ability to speak. To protect you, your mother kept a small crumb of magic to herself to ensure that your magic would not emerge as long as she was alive was alive. When your mother died, this clause became obsolete and you were able to use your powers.

I didn't know how to respond to any of that. It didn't seem possible. My parents were part of the rebellion? But they seemed so...normal. And my mother, I hadn't had proper time to grieve. I tried to bring up tears for her death, but I just felt numb. What was happening to me? I remember how much I cried for my father when he died, but for my mother, nothing. And me, I had magic? What was I even supposed to do with that information?

Use it. Fight back. Join the rebellion, like your friend, Rian.

Shoot. Rian! Lilac! How had I forgotten about them? Were they okay? What had happened to them?

Don't worry I took extra precautions to ensure their safety.

Okay, that confused me even more. Was this voice an actual person or am I just going crazy?

I am a person and you will meet me in reality soon enough. But for now, I must beg you to join the rebellion. Learn your powers. Savannah Reid, you are Ostbourne's only hope left. With your death comes the final death of magic as we know it.

Me? I'm supposed to be this big hero person? As I thought it through, it made sense. My father's untimely death. My mother's inability to speak after my father died, even though the two were not very affectionate towards each other while they were both alive. The light, the burning. It all fit together, nicely. Even the packages made sense now. They must've been from another member of the rebellion.

They were actually from me, but yes you are correct.

The mysterious voice in my head has been providing for my family all this time? I've reached the point where this isn't even shocking.

Footsteps echoed across the hall, growing louder as the person who made them got closer. I turned my head and squinted to see who was standing in the shadows in front of the cell. Once again, my eyes fell on those of Prince Rolland.
