Chapter 28: The emerald search
"I sure hope nothing goes wrong" said a fairy.
"Wrong? Why it's only been ten minutes since our brave volunteer went down" said James.
Meanwhile with the other fairies, the fairy that had found the kitty was shoving said cat near one of the treasure hoarder's' face. The kitty meowed before biting and pulling on the eye patch of the treasure hoarder, claiming it as a toy.
The treasure hoarder demanded that the kitty let go of it's eye patch and the kitty did just that. The eye patch slammed against the treasure hoarder's eye and he yelled out in pain.
Over with James, he soon felt the fairy who was down in the ocean tugging on the rope and that was the signal to pull her back up.
He soon began pulling the fairy up slowly so that she could come up safely as per the diving rules. Once the fairy was back on the ship, James and the other fairies began removing the fairy's helmet while also examining the things she brought with her.
"Ooh look at this" said another fairy as she held up a pearl necklace.
"And this is quite an old sword, probably a cutlass" said James as he held the rusty object.
"Not a bad start huh?" asked the fairy that had gone underwater.
"Yeah, its a good start! But let's try and find that emerald next if we can, I'll go down myself this time. Hopefully I'll have better luck finding it" said James.
Soon it was James's turn to wear the diving suit and once the helmet was placed on, he began going down the ladder at the side of the ship.
"Keep an eye on that pump, make sure those two guys don't stop halfway again" said James.
"We will" said the fairy that was holding the rope.
With that James went down into the ocean and everyone on board the ship could only wait. Then a few minutes later, the fairy who was holding the rope soon felt the rope getting pulled on.
"Girls I need help, James want to come back up. Let's pull him up!" shouted the fairy.
The fairies were soon pulling James up and they sighed when they saw his helmet breach the surface of the water and his hands grabbing the ladder. Once he was back on the ship, he showed the girls what he had found.
"I also couldn't find the emerald but I did find this gold locket and this bottle" said James.
"It looks like there's something in that bottle" said a fairy.
"You're right and I did a scan on it while I was underwater. Apparently it's wine and it's more than two hundred years old! Just you taste it" said James.
"Um......you try it first" said a fairy.
"Ok then, bottoms up" said James as he pulled out the cork and started drinking.
The fairies all watched in amazement as James was chugging down the wine quite quickly. The kitty ignored the treasure hoarders for now and also started looking at James with curiosity.
"........Mmm, it's wonderful! It's absolutely w...w...wonderful! Y....you taste it! Yes, that's f...for y...y...you! I'm going straight down to get another for m...myself!" said James as he handed the empty bottle to the fairy in front of him.
Then suddenly without warning, James jumped off the ship and dived straight into the ocean without his helmet.
"James!" yelled a fairy while grabbing the rope.
"Here, grab this lifebuoy!" yelled another fairy while throwing the kitty overboard.
"Wait, what did you just throw?!" asked another fairy while hearing a splash.
"I threw the lifebuoy, he's gonna need it in case he can't swim!" said the fairy that threw the kitty.
"That wasn't the lifebuoy, you just threw the cat we found!" said the fairy's friend with a dumbfounded face.
Meanwhile over in the area where the kitty got thrown, there were bubbles breaching the surface. The kitty was sinking, it made no efforts to swim back to the surface.
It was just grumbling angrily and making more bubbles by doing so while sinking and the fishes all looked at the sinking kitty with question filled faces.
At that moment, the fairies were successful in pulling James out of the water and his head was soon visible.
"I can't believe it, those two jellyfishes forgot to pump again!" yelled James.
The fairies were soon drying James and getting all the water out of his diving suit.
"But....but it wasn't us, you........" said a treasure hoarder.
"Silence! You were told to pump, so pump you nitwits!" said James as he used a towel on his face.
"What do we do now James? Are there any other areas we can search to find the emerald?" asked a fairy.
"So far we've searched the outside of the sunken ship, we haven't searched the inside yet. Let's start there and try to cover the entire inside area before we lose the sunlight" said James.
With that, James decided to head down again but this time one of the fairies made sure that his helmet was on.
As James continued sinking, he soon saw something weird below him and he wanted to check it out. When he reached the bottom, James was completely stunned to see a kitty alive underwater and looking at him clearly.
He was so shocked and yet so frightened for the kitty's survival that he immediately teleported the kitty back onto the ship above.
Some of the Earth fairies immediately noticed that the kitty was back on board the ship and they went to go get it. When the kitty saw the fairy that had chucked it out to sea, it just stared at her.
Even when the fairies placed the kitty back down, the kitty continued staring at the fairy that had thrown it out to sea. Even while it was sitting down, the kitty continued looking at the fairy and the fairy felt very uncomfortable.
Down below, James was exploring every corner of the sunken ship from within. He even checked the barrels and the sand.
But at that moment, James soon encountered a shark. However James wasn't worried, everyone knows that he's no stranger to sea monsters. Sea monsters from other dimensions were worse than the ones on Earth.
"Thanks Daphne, you sure exposed me to the dangers of the deep whenever I got dragged into underwater missions even though I can't breathe" said James as he shut the shark's mouth easily.
Even though he had his hands on the shark's mouth and was closing it tight, James still took care to not let the shark anywhere near the tube that was giving him air.
The shark was swimming and thrashing wildly but James's grip on it didn't allow the fish to move anywhere. The only time the shark was able move anywhere was when James physically moved the shark itself.
Once outside of the sunken ship, James let go of the shark and the shark immediately swam away. It would find better prey to eat than the one right behind it.
With the shark out of the way, James continued the search. He managed to find more bottles of wine and he even found another cutlass.
After a while of searching some more, he tugged on his rope and he soon felt the fairies above pulling him back up.
"How was it James? Did you find the emerald?" asked a fairy while helping James back onto the ship.
"No, I honestly don't know where else to look. I've been through the entire interior portion of the ship. I've even checked the captain's quarters" said James as he took his helmet off.
"Should we continue the search?" asked the same fairy.
"Let's give it one more go. If we can't find the emerald this time, then it's just not meant to be" said James.
"I'll go this time, I volunteer" said another fairy.
"Are you trying to get away from that cat?" asked the fairy's friend.
"Yes..........I've even apologized to it too........" said the fairy.
"Ok then..........good luck and hopefully we find the emerald this time" said James as he started removing his diving suit.
After making sure that the fairy had passed the safety check, he assisted in lowering the fairy back down into the ocean.
At that moment, Diana came flying towards the ship and she quickly landed on it.
"Is everything ok? You and your team have been gone for a while so the queen was getting worried" said Diana.
"Oh yeah, I forgot to let Morgana know that we'll be assisting these guys in their hunt. Can one of you go back and inform the queen about this? And tell her that we'll be back soon as this is the last diving session" said James.
One of the Earth fairies soon nodded her head and started flying back towards her home island.
"Care to fill me in on the plan?" asked Diana.
"It's like this, these guys are looking for some long lost emerald that supposedly has powers. I made them a deal to try and find this emerald in exchange for leaving this place" said James.
"Huh.........why does that sound so familiar?" wondered Diana.
Soon the fairy came back up and James immediately went towards her. He assisted her and the others in removing the fairy's diving suit and drying her.
"Any luck?" asked James.
"All I managed to find was this golden coin, no signs of an emerald anywhere. We've been through everything already, adding our total searches together" said the fairy as she handed James the coin.
"I see........I'll go and talk to the treasure hoarders about this" said James.
While James talked with the treasure hoarders, the fairy sat down on a crate. When she sat down however, she got a jump scare because of the kitty next to her.
The kitty was just sitting and staring at the fairy. It occasionally swung it's tail but it's gaze wasn't averted or distracted by anything.
The fairy wanted to touch the kitty but something was telling her not to do it, like it was a bad idea right now. Especially considering that she was the one that sent the kitty into the ocean.
Over with James, he explained to the treasure hoarders that the emerald couldn't be found but he also told them not to be disappointed since they did manage to bring up valuable treasures and historic artifacts.
The treasure hoarders were disappointed but they accepted James's words and knowing that these fairies would never leave any stone unturned. The treasure hoarders kept their word and soon set course for home.
James and the fairies all flew back to the island and the fairies brought the kitty with them. Diana was still wondering about that emerald however.
"It could be that the emerald is buried deeper than we thought or maybe the currents pushed it somewhere else" said James.
"Perhaps but this emerald really does ring a bell with me, I wonder why" said Diana.
James and Diana were soon before queen Morgana and they immediately knelt before her.
"Welcome back you two, one of your warrior fairies told me of what you did out there" said Morgana.
"I apologize for worrying you queen Morgana, we were successful in making the intruders go away however. It's a shame that we couldn't recover this emerald however, it'll probably be lost at sea forever" said James.
"About that, I know where the emerald is" said Morgana.
"You do? Where is it?" asked James.
"It's right over there, on the crown for the princess of this island if we ever have an heir. It washed up on our beach one day and ever since it's been a centerpiece for this crown" said Morgana as she pointed at the pedestal with the tiara on it.
"Ohhhh..........that's why it was so familiar to me! We major fairies and some of the guard fairies know about this too" said Diana.
"So let me get this straight. Me and my team went down into the ocean, got our hands dirty with the sand and the wreckage, fought off sharks and worked with the darkness down there....all for nothing?" asked James.
"Pretty much" said Nebula with a smirk.
"Sigh............never mind" said James.
"Oh and by the way James, we'll assist you with the construction of the home for those orphans of yours. I don't think we can entrust the entire task to your team alone" said Nebula with a nervous laugh.
"Yeah that sounds fair" agreed James as he had noticed the wooden boards and tools on his fairies earlier.
