Chapter 19.
Chapter 19
☾
I walked out side and was surprisingly delighted by the weather. It was March so it was definitely warming up outside, especially in Southern California. Today I planned to take full advantage of the weather and wore a I had recently bought at Macy's. Also today our insurance would also reimburse me for the damage Isaac did to my car, I had a world history and a chemistry midterm, Danny would be going back to school, and everyone would officially know Isaac and I were a thing; and it's only Monday.
Friday night was definitely something. My mom went on and on about Isaac. She even went as far as telling me, "I know your dad's not the brightest so it's easy to hide that giant hickey from him, but you really need to work on your makeup skills." It was hard for me to look my mother in the face all weekend. Nonetheless she helped me cover what was left of it before school this morning.
Danny's car is still in the parking garage, and my car was officially being taken to the car lot today, so we had our dad drop us off. This afternoon luckily, Danny said he would have someone from the team drop him off at his car, and Lydia offered me a ride home, so we were both set. She also offered my rides whenever Danny had early practice or had to stay after school. It wouldn't last too long, since I would be starting my search for a new car this afternoon.
At school, I had spent the first half of my day looking for Isaac, but by free period I realized he hadn't even come. I was really looking forward to seeing him today, yet I didn't let it show as I talked with Allison as we walked towards the library. She asked me for my help so she could talk to Scott without being caught by the security cameras he grandfather installed. As we walked in, I couldn't help for my eyes to flicker at the bulky security camera in the corner as it seemed to stare right at us.
We walked down a fiction aisle in the library, taking shelter from the security camera. It looked normal, enough that the actions wouldn't be accounted as suspicious by her grandfather, Principal Argent. Allison lifted the flap to her purse and suddenly pulled out a tablet, that she slide between the bookshelves to Scott who was just an aisle over. "It's everything Lydia can translate," Allison whispered in a hushed voice low enough for Scott to hear effortlessly with his heightened hearing. "And trust me, she was very confused."
I wasn't informed all too much about the information held on the tablet, in fact it seemed that I was still missing a few pieces to this whole supernatural ordeal, and I was getting kind of irritated with knowing so little. Allison did tell me it was a book called the bestiary? It was a book she stole from her grandfather that had more information on the kanima and other magical creatures. If it wasn't in some random language, I would be reading that book front to back to get some enlightenment on the whole "supernatural" thing.
"Yeah, what'd you tell her?" Scott asked. Lydia, sadly, was still left in the dark in the whole supernatural kanima thing, and right now I felt really bad about it. I mean it's not my secret to tell, plus I don't even know all about it so how could I be the one to tell her?
"That we were part of an online gaming community that battles mythical creatures," Allison answered and I accidentally snorted a laugh.
Allison turned to look at me. "Really?" I questioned. "That's what you came up with? An online gaming world, seriously?"
"I am part of an online gaming community that battles mythical creatures," another voice answered. I leaned over to look through the hole on the shelf, and saw Stiles standing next to Scott hold an open book in this hands. When he saw me looking, he waved.
"Of course you would Stiles," I sighed. Allison told them that I knew what was going on with the kanima ordeal, since I was there the night at the pool and the night at Scott's house. I don't think Allison informed them about how close I was with Isaac though, in fact, I don't even think she knows how close I am to Isaac. I hadn't even told her, or anyone for that matter, that I was dating Isaac.
"Okay, does it say how to find out who's controlling him?" Scott asked.
Allison shakes her head. "Not really. But Stiles was right about the murderers."
"Yes!" Stiles whispered happily.
"Wait what about the murderers?" I asked. Like I said, I was still missing a few things here and there.
"I said that the kanima only went after killers, and look here I was right all along," Stiles explained.
"It calls the kanima a weapon of vengeance," Allison began. "There's a story in there about this South American priest who uses the kanima to execute murderers in his village..."
"All right, see? So maybe it's not all that bad," Stiles added.
I checked all around us to make sure no one saw the suspicious behavior of Allison and I in the aisle as she continued. "Until the bond grew strong enough that it killed whoever he wanted it to."
"Oh how lovely," I mumbled under my breath.
While Stiles chided, "All bad, all very, very bad," at the same time.
Allison pulled a book out of the shelf and so did I to keep up out act. I was turning the book over and around and read the title 'The Death of a Salesmen.' "Here's the thing, though. The kanima's actually supposed to be a werewolf. But it can't be..." I looked up and notice one of the librarians enter the aisle, and I quickly nudged Allison and pointed to the lady with my eyes and she stopped talking. The librarian on put a book back on the shelf, before going back towards her desk I assumed.
I nodded when she was gone, and Scott started talking."Until it resolves that in its past which manifested it."
"Okay, if that means that Jackson could use a few thousand hours of therapy, I could've told you that myself." Stiles sassed. The fact the kanima was Jackson still shocked me. I mean I knew he was a jerk, but I wouldn't have wish that upon him
"What if... It has something to do with his parents?" Allison suggested. "His real parents?"
"Yeah, does anybody actually know what happened to them?" Stiles asked.
"I know is that they died when he was even a week old," I said shocking everyone. "I also know that hasn't told his adoptive parents that he loved them ever since they told him that he was adopted back in middle school." It was true, and it was sad to say it. Mr. and Mrs. Whittlemore were such nice people, that it was hard (I assumed) for them knowing their own son didn't love them anymore. I didn't know many details, Danny and Lydia didn't tell me much about Jackson's past. I knew they knew more, but even me being as nosey as I am in peoples personal lives, didn't wanna go that far. "I know Lydia about as much as me. If not I know Danny knows more about Jackson than anyone," I suggested.
"What if she doesn't know anything?" Scott leered.
"Well, he doesn't have a restraining order against Jamie or I, so... I'll talk to him myself." Allison quipped.
"A restraining order!" I half shouted. "When the hell did that happen? What the hell happened? What did you two do?!"
"Why do you assume I had something to do with this?" Stiles asked me defensively. I just raised and eyebrow and crossed my arms. "Okay, maybe you're right, but that's not the point."
I looked curiously at Allison. "I'll tell you later," she informed me. I nodded my head in appreciation.
"Okay, what do I do?" Scott asked no one in particular.
"You have a make-up exam, remember?" Allison reminded him. Yesterday Scott missed his chemistry exam, and let's just say Mr. Harris wasn't too happy with him skipping.
Allison reached through the bookshelf and delicately touched Scott's resting hand. Internally, I awed, but right now I was also slightly jealous I wasn't with Isaac right now. Although on the bright side, I actually could be seen with my boyfriend in public, so I wasn't complaining.
Like the super cute boyfriend Scott was he warned Allison to be careful around Jackson, and told us to leave if anything bizarre happened.
Stiles also added anything evil, sticking his head through the book spot on the bookshelf. I giggled furiously, while Allison pushed his head back through. We left the library several minutes before the end of our free period to search of Jackson. She suggested looking by his car, by his locker, and in the boys locker room, since we definitely knew he wasn't in the library.
Five minutes into our search me marked off car, and locker, but we still had the boys locker room to check. We walked closely into the deserted part of the school, since nobody was allowed back here during class periods unless you we're a play. The bell rang for the next class period, but we had already taken our exam so we had this as an extra study period, while the others finished and made up tests.
As we walked further back I heard footsteps and apparently Allison did to, because we both picked up our pace and turned the corner just in time to see Jackson enter the boys locker room. Not only were we girls, but we definitely weren't players, so we weren't allowed in there. Not like I would want to enter the guys locker, I've been in there once with Danny and it wrecked of sweat and dirty laundry.
We shared a look before hurrying to the door so Jackson wouldn't get too far ahead. As Allison but her hand on the door knob, the door suddenly flung open.
"Oh, you two just scared the hell out of me," Matt Daehler say jokingly as he smiled at Allison and I.
"Sorry, I wa... I was just, um, I was... Nothing," Allison said while I shifted awkwardly in my spot. I wonder what Matt was wondering when he saw two girls trying to enter the boys locker room. Nothing good I presume.
"Ah, that's... Nice heels Allison," Matt commented. I looked at the heels Allison had in her hand.
"Oh! Yeah, uh, my feet were hurting, so I..." she lead off.
I looked Matt up and down, and as usually, he had his camera on hand. One would think he was in yearbook or photography, but he wasn't. Allison had told me Matthew kept popping up at random times having small talk with her, which she found nice, in an odd sort of way.
"Same reason I never wear mine," Matt joked poorly.
Both Allison and I shared a strange look as we stared at Matt. I knew he was trying to make small talk, but it definitely wasn't working.
"What?" Allison asked finally.
h, forget it. Hey, did you hear about the underground show? Apparently, they've got some big name spinning.
"Forget it,"Matt said, "Hey, did you hear about the underground show?" He said obviously talking to Allison. It was as if I was chopped liver to him. I don't even think he's acknowledged my presence standing right next to her. It's not that I was jealous, but his manners was a thing that needed to be touched up.
"Oh, you mean like a rave?" she inquired.
Matt nodded, "Oh, is it still a rave if you don't roll?" I glanced at Allison who obviously looked uncomfortable. " I just call it a party. But hey, I got a friend who can hook us up with tickets if you're down. Want me to get you one?" He asked her, finally he seemed to notice me to. "I can get you one to if you want Jamie," he suggested. In no way did he sound sincere when he asked me, and there was no way I was planning to attend his weird rave/party thing.
"I'm sorry I already have plans," I said looking any where but his face.
Allison being the nice person she is agreed. "Yeah. Yeah, great." I watched as she rubbed the back of her neck.
Matt seemed shocked at first but went with it. "Yeah? All right, cool. Um, it's Friday, so... Looking forward to it." He walked pasted us and started down the deserted hallway.
"Yeah," she answered quietly as he turned away. "You have plans?" she whispered quietly.
I shook my head, "No, but I'll make some," I said when suddenly there was deep breathing and vigorous coughing coming from the boys locker room. "Jackson," I mumbled under my breath as I turned the door knob open the boys locker room.
As we entered we heard the sound of running water from a shower in the back, and the continuous sound of Jackson as he heaved in and out. "Jackson?" Allison asked loudly enough for anyone in the locker room to here. I hugged my library book I check out close to my body as we trekked deeper into the dingy locker room.
"In here," we heard Jackson say from the showers. "Is something wrong?" I watch as Allison strode closer to the showers and I followed behind a few steps. I don't know what she was thinking as she turn the corner to the showers, and suddenly turned back wide eyed. I knew for the look on her face what she saw. What did she think he was doing in there? Showering with his clothes on? Sometimes I don't think Allison thinks things through. Luckily I stood back and didn't see any of that.
"Y... You could've warned me," she stuttered distraught.
"Well you just walk in the the shower area, Allison. Did you think he was clothed?" I asked.
He turned off the water and all that could be heard was the remnants trickling into the drain. "You're the one that walked into the boys' locker room," Jackson spoke grimacingly.
"I thought I heard you... I th... forget it," she uttered.
Suddenly he walked around the corner, and lets just say I saw something of Jackson's so far only Lydia's seen. Disgusted, I turned my back like Allison had. "Not even a towel Jackson? Really, have you no sham?"
He chuckled deeply. "Did you wanna talk about something?"
"We can ask you later if now's not a good time," I suggested, my heart still beating rapidly.
"No," he shot blocking his arm in front of Allison and I. Quickly I shut my eyes, as I felt Jackson too close for comfort. "Let's talk now."
"I thought you two wanted to talk," Jackson said almost mockingly.
"I... We have to get to cl...," Allison stuttered pulling my arm towards the door. My heart was beating rapidly and I was unnerved knowing that the kanima was just feet away from me, and he didn't seem to thrilled.
"Oh, no, no, you two don't. I know both of you have perfect grades. You can skip one class. Are you okay? Both of your heart's beating like crazy." He said almost stalkingly.
I thought you wanted to talk.
"We... we... we changed our minds," I stuttered.
"You sure Jamie? Because you look a little stressed, and not just you. Is it Scott Allison? Is it that whole thing?"As he spoke he kept taking steps closer and closer to us, making us take frequent steps back. "I still can't believe you actually think your little Romeo and Juliet story is gonna last. You know he's eventually just gonna run to Derek and join up with him and his little wolf pack. And you Jamie, I don't know how no one else has noticed it. Maybe it's because I know you better than everyone else. I know how Lahey follows you around like a lost little puppy. I can see the giant hickey he put on your neck. If you don't realize that, then you're both gonna be the stupidest bitches in this town. Well, other than Scott, Stiles, and Isaac, since all three are pretty stupid bitches themselves." Jackson sneered. I felt the tears whelming in eyes, and when I glanced at Allison I saw the same reflection in her eyes.
I was to afraid to speak and tears finally started escaping my eyes flowing down my face as he forced us against a wall. Allison was much braver than me and stood up to him. "Stop!" She shouted. "Just stop!"
"What are you gonna do, Allison, hmm... Protect Jamie, who can barely lift her little finger?" He scowled and suddenly put a hand to both of our throats and held us firmly against the locker room wall."When your stupid bitch of boyfriend turns on you? They kill your aunt. They almost kill Lydia. Who do you really think's gonna be next, hmm? Not you. No, no, it can't be either of you, because you're in love. Is that what you tell yourself, hmm? 'Scott's different and everything's gonna work out because we're in love.' And Jamie I don't know what the hell is exactly going on between you and Lahey, but guess what, it's not gonna work. Well, if that's what you believe, then you're already dead; you're both dead. I just... I just hope your dad has been teaching you moves to protect yourself. And Jamie, your a lost cause."
I was heartbroken. Although, Jackson and I never had seen eye to eye, I had never imagined him saying something like to me. Maybe this whole supernatural thing has gotten to his head. Maybe he wasn't ever human anymore, because he suddenly extended his razor sharp claws around my enclosed neck and I shriek loudly and began heavily sobbing. His claws touched my skin, but not deeply enough to pierce it through. Jackson was right, I had nothing to protect myself with, and I was a lost cause.
