Chapter 18.
My mouth hung open as my mom turned right into our driveway and parked the car outside of the garage. "Jamie," my mom asked pulling the keys from the car.
"Yes mom," I fretted.
"Who is that?" She turned in her seat to look at me.
"Uhh... It's just a friend. And, um... we have something we need to talk about for school," I stuttered. "Alone," I quickly add in. My mom just keep staring between me and Isaac, who had moved near the opening of the garage door. Danny, like his cheeky usual self, kept grinning like a maniac. "So you know just leave us alone, please." The way the two were staring at me had me fidgeting in my seat, so quickly I flung open the car door covering my neck with my hand and grab my backpack before sliding out.
"Hi Jamie," Isaac smiled as I walked closer. He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, standing a few feet back in the driveway. Briskly, I walk over to Isaac and grab his hand. "I'm sorry came here a little earlier, I didn't know-- okay then," he said as I pulled him through the garage and into the backdoor. I had to admit, he looked super cute, but right now I didn't want to be bombarded with questions from neither my mom or Danny, so I quickly tugged Isaac behind the stairs up to my bedroom.
I tug him into my bedroom and lock the door behind us. Again I didn't want anyone or anything, supernatural or not, to bother us. So even if closing the door didn't stop a werewolf, or a kani-something, or the key my dad had made downstairs, locking the door gave us the feeling of being alone.
I run my fingers through my hair and let out a puff of air I didn't even know I was holding. Isaac was looking at me oddly now, and I wasn't exactly sure what to say. "I'm sorry about that. It was probably really weird of me," I admitted sitting down on my bed across the room.
"No, no, it wasn't weird at all. I would have climbed into your room if I would have know you would be with Danny, and your...mom?" he guessed. He obviously knows Danny from lacrosse, so he didn't have to guess about him. My mother on the other hand, he must have had no idea who she was. Maybe he's seen her at games, but other than that she was a new face.
I nodded, "Yeah, that was my mom. And maybe I would be driving alone, but my car was wreck by someone," I accused. "I wonder what or who would have done that." I glared at Isaac who was still standing near the door. He had leaned himself casually against the door, and frowned slightly when I brought up the fact that he ruined my car.
"Look Jamie, your car was an accident--"
"An accident! You literally put giant, and I'm taking huge, claw marks on my trunk! And what about my wall that had more claw marks in it! I had to fill it was plaster the other day." I exclaimed.
Isaac groaned loudly. He pulled my the swivel chair from under my desk and turned it around and sat on it backwards. "Look, you know it was an accident Jamie. I... the whole "control" thing is still new to me. Plus, we had that fight and you yelled at me, and I couldn't calm down without your... you just forget it--"
I cut him off, "That's not just something someone forgets. I mean you literally destroyed my car! I might have to get a new one now." I tried to stay calm, but I was just getting angrier.
He ran his palms over his eyelids, and cover his face with his hands. "I really don't want to talk about that right now, because it seems like every time were alone, we always end up arguing, and I do anything for us not to argue right now." He rolled over closer to me, and grabbed my hand that was limply laying in my lap. Isaac wrapped is large hand around mine and intertwined our fingers. My heart started racing at the simple touch
Although, I was still highly upset about the idea of my car being ripped apart I pushed it out off my mind and nodded. "Whatever, but your not getting out of this conversation so easily next time. Oh and this hickey on my neck, is not working out," I say pointing to the large spot covered with makeup on my neck.
Isaac cheekily smiled at that and whispered sorry under his breath, but didn't meet my eyes. But after that, he didn't say anything, and neither did I. So we sat in silence. I was content with the silence, because we were still holding hands, and everything about that relaxed me.
It was silent until there was a knock on my door. "Jamie," my mom said.
"What mom?" I spoke normally, although I wanted to snap at her, but I know that wouldn't have ended very well.
"Um, I know you have a guest over, but do you mind opening the door. I just feel more comfortable..." she trailed off. I knew what she was getting at, but she had nothing to worry about. I looked down at Isaac's and I's hand and reluctantly let it go, and went over and unlocked the door. She stood there with a bright smile on her face and looked straight pasted me.
Suddenly she started waving, and I turned around to see Isaac smiling. "Hello Mrs. Māhealani, it's nice to finally meet you. I'm Isaac Lahey," he beamed standing up from the chair walking over towards my mom with his hand extended.
My mom looked shocked, extremely shocked. The last name Lahey has been the talk of the town the past few weeks, with Mr. Lahey's murder, to Isaac's accusation and him running away, Lahey was a name secretly talked about all through town. She also must have been surprised since, I was also called to the Sheriff's station to give a statement concerning the Lahey case a while back. Even through her shock, she extended her hand. "It's so nice to meet you to Isaac. I've heard about you from both my kids. You also play lacrosse with my son, Danny, don't you?" my mom asked. She knew how to charm anyone, but apparently so did Isaac.
"Yes ma'am, we've been on the same team since freshman year. Oh and how is he? Jamie told me he was put in the hospital last night?"
I watch as my mom put a hand over her heart, "We actually just picked him up from the hospital right after I picked Jamie up, he's down stairs in the kitchen if you want to talk to him. You know what, why don't I get you something to drink to?"
"Oh no thank you," Isaac said politely.
Mother waved it off, "Nonsense, I insist. Plus, I know your hungry Jamie I heard your stomach growl in the car," she smiled ushering us out of my room.
"Mom," I mumbled threateningly as I passed her. She lightly slapped my shoulder and headed down the stairs after Isaac. I glared at where she was for a second before rushing downstairs, before I'd have to input damage control. I walked into the kitchen to see Danny and Isaac talking nonchalantly with each other. I was happy to know that Danny got along well with Isaac, unlike his best friend, Jackson, who acted like a complete ass to him. My mom jumped and continued to talk asking several questions Isaac was quick to answer, but I knew at this rate, she would be getting to personal and I had to make sure she wouldn't get that far.
Absentmindedly, I started fidgeting in my place as I stood and watch the clock click, and shifted my weight onto my other hip. Isaac must have heard me and turned around. Danny and Isaac looked at me questioningly, and I took that as my chance. "Mom before you go into pouring him a glass, Isaac said he had to be home by five forty."
I really wanted to talk, but with mother in the way, I was never going to get that chance. was hinting with my eyebrows at Isaac to play along, and he took it. "Yeah, I'm sorry Mrs. Māhealani," Isaac said charmingly. "I really need to be heading off soon."
She sighed, and turned around from the refrigerator. "Oh okay then, but why don't you let Jamie and Danny drive you home, since I didn't see you have a car in the driveway I assumed you walked. The least thing they could do was drop you off," she suggested.
This was not how I want this all to go down, so I whipped around and pleaded with Danny with my eyes. He caught my attention, and nodded. "Maybe just Jamie can drop Isaac off, I mean I'm still not feeling to good and I've got homework to make up for today."
"Are you sure Danny?" I offered fakely, but I hope mom couldn't tell.
He nodded acting strained. I knew he was perfectly fine, because I had also been affected by... whatever that lizard is called's venom, so I knew that he was in no pain what so ever at the moment and hadn't been at all. "Yeah, I'm sure."
My mom looked hesitant at first but nodded reluctantly. "Well it was nice to meet you Isaac," she started.
Isaac nodded. "Likewise, maybe I can stay longer next time," he added.
"Next time, but hopefully you can stay for dinner then," she grinned. "And--"
I didn't even want to know what else she was going to say so I cut in. "Yeah maybe next time, but right now we've gotta go. So bye everyone," I said quickly. I grabbed Isaac's hand and as I pulled him out the door while he was still saying bye to my mom and to Danny. I pointed out my mom's car and grabbed the keys before climbing in the drivers seat and pulling out of the drive way.
It was silent until Isaac spoke, "You know, I don't have a curfew, right Jamie?" He smile jokingly.
I snickered. "I know, but my mother... well you saw her. And all I want right now is for us to talk with out being interrupted for once. Oh and were am I taking you? To your house or what?" I said as I drove past several houses.
"Um, just drop me off in the warehouse district," he directed.
"The warehouse district!" I shouted. "Are you serious Isaac! You've been sleeping in the warehouse district alone!" The warehouse district wasn't the safest part of town, it was home to some of the more shady people of Beacon Hills, and I was extremely worried if Isaac was living there.
"I'm not alone. Derek, Erica, and Boyd are there two," he added.
"I don't even know this Derek guy, and I hate him more and more each day. I mean look at everything he's done to everyone! And then to add on top of it, he's making you live in the warehouse district!" I called out.
"It's not as bad as it seems. I mean there's heating and air, and there's a fridge, with some food. So it's not that bad. Plus I went to my house, and grabbed a few of my things, so I'm comfortable. There's nothing to worry about." Isaac reassured.
I sighed, "I know you can take care of yourself, but it just worries me kinda."
Isaac quickly changed the subject. "So you mom, she was nice though," he suggested. "Plus, she invited me over for dinner so she's gotta like me." Isaac smiled. I scoffed and Isaac noticed. "What was that for?"
"She invited Danny's boyfriend over once." I said blatantly.
"And what happened with him? I thought Danny and who was it, Brice, were fine."
"Yeah, they were fine until Brice broke it off with Danny two days ago. And he didn't even have the dignity to give Danny a good explanation!" I grumbled.
"What an asshole," Isaac remarked.
"I hope Brice ends up with his head in a trash can or his tires popped or something awful like that, because I know Danny still cares about him, and I care about Danny. Therefore, Brice literally means nothing to me." I was too busy focusing on the road and taking my anger out on the steering wheel to look at Isaac, but after a few moments of him not answering, I began to think the worst. What if he thought what I said was weird? What if he thought what I said was really weird? What if he thought I was weird? I think that would be the worst of all.
It was several red lights later when he finally spoke. "I would never do that."
I shifted gears and looked up at him. "What do you mean?"
"Hurt you like that. Like what Brice did to Danny, I would never do to you."
I looked at , and felt my heart skip a beat. Not only did he look extraordinarily cute when he was nervous, but everything about that sentence had me restlessly moving in my seat, and my palms sweating. I frowned when I saw the top of a warehouse come into view through the windshield. "You know Jamie, I was just wondering--"
The road came to a split and I had a green light, "Am I going left or right?"
"Right and then a left," he quickly answered. I turned then turned again and he continued, "So I know it's been kinda hard for you to take all this in..." he said gesturing to himself, and I couldn't help but snicker. I knew he wasn't talking about himself physically, but about learning about werewolves and kaniman's and different stuff, but I still smiled.
"Yeah I know what you mean, and when do I turn?" I asked as I drove straight towards the side of a brick building. Isaac said the left and I spun the wheel. "Now what where you saying?"
Isaac sighed and buried his face in his hands, before looking back up at me his brilliant blue eyes. "It's right here," he stuttered and said pointing to an abandoned looking building several stories high. Other than the slightly ajar door off to the left, the place looked deserted.
"Um, well I guess this is it. Well, for today at least," I said shifting the the gears to parked.
"Yeah, but I uh, wanted to ask you if you uh... Look I'm really new to this whole thing and I've only asked a girl out once and it ended in a total nightmare," he started. "I mean you know what happened, you were there."
"I remember," I said sadly. I distinctly remember who he asked to, and he was right, it was a nightmare. Last year Isaac, came up and asked Lydia on a date, which wasn't the smartest move to begin with, I mean Lydia turned almost everyone down. The she went on and completely humiliated him and told him to come back when the bike he rode to school had an engine, not a chain.
"And I know a couple weeks ago wasn't the best start for us, but I want to know if, you..." he kept rambling saying everything but what I think he meant to say. off and couldn't put words to his thoughts. Quickly, I leaned across the seats and pressed my lips to his check, which instantly shut him up. He look utterly shocked and surprised.
I leaned closer to his ear. "Just ask me, I think you know the answer," I breathed in his ear, and watched him closely.
Just like the other day in Mr. Harris's class when I froze up at the proximity of our bodies, he did the same, but this time he when he spoke he wasn't as nervous. "Jamie, would you go out with me?"
My checks hurt as I beamed in delight and leaned across the seats again, but this time to meet his lips. It was quick and to the point, but I wanted to get the fact across that I said yes.
I was officially dating Isaac Lahey.
