The Day You Almost Caught Professor Moriarty
Several days after Molly's meeting with Alexandra, Holmes, and Watson, she was going on an outing with Alexandra and Mary, John's fiancee now. The three of them got along splendidly. They were just walking the streets and buying anything they wanted.
"So, Molly, are you interested in anyone?" Mary asked.
"Well, Mr. Holmes is quite handsome." Molly said.
"Holmes considers himself married to his work." Alexandra said simply. "He has never shown any interest in any woman who he has met."
"My fiance told me that he seemed to be interested in that...Irene Adler, wasn't that her name?" Mary said.
"That was her name, yes." Alexandra nodded. "But, she is married."
"Alexandra, might I say that I think you are jealous?" Molly chuckled.
"What would make you say that?" Alexandra gasped, outraged at the suggestion that she was in love with Sherlock I-Have-To-Insult-Your-Intelligence-Every-Chance-I-Get Holmes.
"You keep shooting down every suggestion of wife he could have." Molly said.
She and Mary exchanged a look and giggled. Alexandra, for the first time in her life, found them thoroughly annoying. She took a long look at a hat in a window they were passing so she didn't have to answer them. When they called her, she followed them. They kept pestering her about if she loved Holmes and she would give a simple no in response. They didn't seem like they would be satisfied until she said yes, which she would not do. She felt no attraction to Holmes whatsoever. He was rude and felt he had to insult her at every chance he got. As they were heading back, Alex saw the hat again. It was quite lovely...she had only bought a book about medicine that John had requested, so she felt that she could spoil herself a bit.
"Mary, Molly, I'm just going to buy that lovely hat." She said. "I won't be but a moment."
Molly and Mary nodded and said that they would be waiting inside the pub across the street. Alexandra went inside to buy the hat and was greeted by an odd sight. The shop, despite the door being open, was completely empty.
"Hello?" She called out. No answer.
Alexandra decided to buy the hat and leave some money on the counter and a note explaining what had happened. She was just about to leave when she heard the floorboards squeak behind her. She stopped and turned around, knowing well who this would be.
"Ah. I knew it would be you." She said, smiling sweetly.
"For a woman, you are very smart, Miss Watson." James Moriarty said. He walked towards Alexandra.
"What would you do if I was to run right now?" She asked.
"I have men standing outside who will grab you." Moriarty said. "Besides," He took out a pistol and held it up, "I already told you that I am a very accurate shot."
Alexandra, trembling from head to toe, followed Moriarty out the back. There was a carriage waiting in the alley. Sebastian Moran was sitting in the driver's seat.
"Professor, would you like to drive on the way back?" He asked.
"Yes, please." Moriarty said. "You sit in the back with Miss Watson. And remember, don't touch her."
"I would not dream of it, sir." Moran said. He opened the door for Alexandra. "After you, Miss Watson."
Alexandra stepped on his toes. "Oops, I slipped."
"Quite alright." Moran said as he took the seat opposite her.
"Where are you taking me?" Alexandra asked.
"To the head of Moriarty's network. He thinks it will be a way of getting to Holmes and Watson."
"Holmes does not care for me." Alexandra said. "On the contrary, he will be glad to be rid of me."
"Well, he cares for your brother. Therefore, he will need to get you back." Moran said.
The rest of the journey was in silence. Alexandra refused to talk to Moran and he gave up trying to make conversation. When they got to the mansion, Moran and Moriarty led Alexandra inside. Everyone looked at her, a hungry glint in their eyes. Moriarty left to go tend to other business, not really caring about what happened to Alexandra. A man approached her and grabbed her from behind. She let out a screech of surprise and fear. Moran whirled to face the man, his pistol outstretched.
"Let her go!" He said. The man, after a pause and realizing Moran was serious, pushed Alexandra towards him. Moran caught her and helped her stand straight. He pointed the pistol around the whole room. "Hear me now, for I shan't repeat this! Under no circumstances shall anyone harm Miss Watson. Am I understood?" The men didn't reply, but glared at Moran. "Am I understood?"
"Yes, Colonel Moran." They all said at the same time.
"Thank you." Moran rolled his eyes. "Come along, Miss Watson."
Alexandra followed Moran up the stairs. He opened the door to a splendid room that was bigger than the living room at Baker Street, which was the largest room there.
"This shall be your room while you stay with us. If you need anything, just call my name." Moran said.
"Colonel Moran?" Alexandra questioned.
"Yes, I served with the First Bangalore Pioneers in the Jowaki Expedition of 1877 and 1878." Moran said. "I was also in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and saw action at the Battle of Char Asiab."
"Yes, I think I've read one of your books." Alexandra said.
"Have you?" Moran said. "May I inquire as to which one?"
"If I recall correctly, it was Three Months in the Jungle. I did love the story about you chasing the man-eating tiger into the drain." Alexandra said.
"I remember that." Moran laughed fondly at the memory. He pulled up the sleeve on his arm, revealing a large scar. "This keeps the memory alive."
"My God, a tiger did that?" Alexandra questioned.
"Yes." Moran nodded, pulling the sleeve back down. "Well, I must take my leave, Miss Watson. Good afternoon."
"Good afternoon, Colonel Moran." Alexandra nodded to him as he left.

"Where's Alexandra? She should have been back by now." Watson checked his pocketwatch. "I'm going to look for her."
"I'll join you." Holmes said. "Perhaps I can find her."
The two opened the door to Mary and Molly on the doorstep. Mary and Molly explained that they had seen Alexandra go into a hat shop and she had not come out since. Watson wanted to go right away and look for his sister, but Holmes did not wish to since it was already quite dark outside. Watson, after saying goodnight to Mary, stormed off to his bedroom, angry at Holmes. The next day did not look like a good day to go looking for Alexandra either. It was storming outside. Both Holmes and Watson hoped that she was somewhere safe and dry. They both had no idea, however, that Alexandra was being cared for.
Finally, after a week of rainy days, there was a sunny day where both Holmes and Watson could go look for Alexandra. They went to the hat shop Mary and Molly had said she had gone into. It was packed today, so it was hard to track her. They went out back and found faint carriage tracks that Sherlock lost after a few minutes. The rain had washed it away. Holmes growled in frustration and nearly shattered his magnifying glass. He didn't like to admit it, but he was worried for Alexandra. A million things could have gone wrong.
"When she gets back, we're getting her a dog." Holmes told Watson, who nodded.
"Agreed." He said.
They kept searching for Alexandra for the whole day, calling her name on the streets of London. She was nowhere to be found. Holmes decided to go to Lestrade. He walked into his office.
"Where's the prisoner who used to work for Moriarty?" He asked.
Lestrade took them to the prisoner after the situation had been explained. Sherlock sat down in front of him and put his hands together and pressed them to his lips, reading the man.
"Where does your boss usually keep prisoners?" He asked.
"He keeps them where we all work." The prisoner said.
"And where would that be?" Holmes asked.
"He moves every time one of us doesn't come in for work without an excuse for one week without telling him why beforehand. If we've been captured, we're required not to tell within that week." The prisoner said. "But sometimes I've seen him just not move because he does not feel like it."
"Where was your last base?" Holmes asked.
The prisoner told him. Holmes thanked him and set out to find Alexandra. Holmes and Watson prayed that Moriarty would be there and Alexandra would still be alive yet.
---------------------
Alexandra was sitting in her room, reading. She had not been let out at all in the whole week she had been here except to go to the bathroom. Suddenly, Moran burst into the room.
"Miss Watson, you have to come with me." He said urgently.
"What is it?" Alexandra asked.
"Just come with me!" Moran said.
He grabbed Alexandra's wrist and dragged her down the stairs. Alexandra got a fleeting glimpse of Holmes and Watson running around. They saw her and ran for her. Moran saw them too and ran faster with Alex.
"MR. HOLMES! JOHN!" Alexandra yelled.
"ALEXANDRA!" Watson yelled, running for her. Holmes did the same.
Holmes and Moran fought for a few minutes while Watson tried to get Alexandra away. Moriarty (who rarely ever joined the fights) saw the commotion and decided that it was time for Alexandra to come with him. He jumped from the top of the stairs and landed gracefully in front of the door, blocking the path of Alexandra and Watson.
"Time for you to come with me, Miss Watson." He said, grabbing her.
"NO, LET HER GO!" Watson shouted.
"Remember this as the day that you almost caught Professor Jim Moriarty, Mr. Holmes!" Moriarty shouted. He ran out the door with Alexandra, who was struggling and screaming.
"LET ME GO! HOLMES, JOHN, MORAN, SOMEONE!" Alexandra shouted, sobbing as Moriarty threw her in a carriage.
He climbed into the driver's seat and cracked a whip forcing the horses to run as fast as they could. Alexandra looked out the window. The last sight she saw was Holmes and Watson trying in vain to chase after the carriage.
"HOLMES, JOHN!" She shouted again.
"Miss Watson, we're coming!" Holmes shouted.
"PLEASE!" Alexandra yelled.
"Will you please shut UP?!" Moriarty said, whacking her on the head.
Alexandra, her skull nearly splitting with pain, fell back into the carriage, as her vision blackened. The last thing she heard was her brother screaming her name. and the last thing she felt was her hat slipping off her head.
Holmes, angry and upset, picked up Alexandra's hat off the road. He handed it to Watson. Watson let out a yell of rage and grief. He had a feeling he would never see his sister again.
"Where is she?!" A new voice yelled. Holmes and Watson turned around. Moran had run out of the building.
"Moriarty took her." Holmes said.
"What's it to you, anyway?!" Watson yelled. "You were going to take her!"
"Not where he's going to take her. I was going to take her to my personal home." Moran said. "And the reason I care, Doctor, is because I care about your sister. I had a sister, once. She fell ill and died a few years ago. Your sister reminds me of her. I am saying that I love your sister in a brotherly way."
"You're a liar!" Watson shouted. "I am Alexandra's brother, not you!"
"He's not lying. My mother was a friend of his mother's. She heard about it." Holmes said. He looked to Moran. "What could we possibly gain from you?"
"I know where Moriarty is taking her." Moran said. "I know where Alexandra Watson will be."
"Take us there, and I swear that you will face no charges for your crimes." Holmes said. He held out his hand to shake. "Deal?"
Sebastian shook his hand. "Deal."

I watched the first Pirates of the Caribbean today and am currently watching the second. Watching Orlando Bloom as Will Turner equals a lot of Sebby in this chapter. Orlando was always how I pictured Sebastian Moran and I thought Will Turner made for an excellent Victorian Seb so it was awesome when I found the picture of him enclosed in this chapter.
