Chapter 3
"Work it baby! Work it! Own it!", Tae could hear Jimin encouraging him as he walked towards the Maserati. Tae's long legs made him approach the car with quick steps. Before arriving at the driver's window, he placed his coat on his left arm, took off his red beret and ruffled his blond curls with his long delicate fingers. His gaze was fierce as he moved closer to the car. The mask was in place and Tae knew that he was looking gorgeous tonight. This one was his and he would make good money out of him.
The driver of the Maserati had lowered the window, but he did not pay particular attention to the young man that approached him. Instead, he was maneuvering the gearshift of the car. He was clearly not used to drive a manual car. By now Tae had arrived at the height of the driver and he was looking straight at the man that was driving such an expensive car.
And what he saw through the window was not at all what he had expected to see. Given the luxury brand of the car and the cost that came with such a fancy vehicle, Tae had expected to see a man in his fifties or sixties, or at the very best at his early forties. But instead, he was observing a man in his is twenties, - a man not much older than himself -, manhandling the car. "You need a helping hand?", Tae asked the driver all charming, even though he was clearly surprised by this fortuitous encounter.
The man turned around in his seat, taking his eyes off the gear to look straight at him. His hair was raven black, the complete opposite of Tae's, and his eyes were cold. Not only were they cold but the young man looked completely disinterested in Tae. Had they been wrong? Hadn't he halted for them? Wasn't he looking for a date?
"No", the man answered grimly, "I want to find BEVERLY HILLS. Can you give me directions?".
Tae was clearly taken aback. He had not been prepared to be rejected so directly. Especially not by a young man like this. Sure, he was rich – or at least he seemed to be rich (he was driving an effing Maserati) – and the rich men usually were pricks. But often it were these same rich men who got lost in this part of town, driven by the urge to have some "illicit" fun. On top of that, they payed well. He could handle some rudeness and perversion but never had someone rejected him so directly.
If for a second a crack had appeared in Tae's perfect mask, he was professional enough to hide it quickly and to get back to his unshaken and unbothered self. "Sure", he replied and offered the young man one of his sugar sweet smiles. The young man looked relieved by his answer. "For 10 bucks", Tae added quickly. His sweet smile became a little nastier but still charming to the eye.
The young man opened his mouth in astonishment. Then he shook his head, the rising anger could be seen in his every movement. "Ridiculous!", he spit out and looked back at the road, his brows furrowed.
"The price just went up to 20", Tae replied calmly, his hands were still resting on the car's open window.
Shocked, the young man turned around once more, facing Tae with even more animosity in his eyes. "You can't charge me for directions!", he exclaimed frustrated.
Tae raised one eyebrow and gave him the brightest smile. "I can do anything I want to, baby. I ain't lost!".
Satisfied with himself, Tae was about to walk away from the car and its driver, when he heard the young man call him back. "Alright. Alright! You win! I lose!", he said, annoyed, but still holding a note out of the window.
Tae caught the bill between his middle finger and index, opened the door and let himself drop into the passenger's seat. "For 20 bucks, I'll show you personally", a big smile had formed on his lips. "I will show you how to get there. Just take the first street on your right".
While Tae was fastening his seatbelt and stuffing carefully the bill in his bag, Jeon started the car with a maladroit gesture. Nevertheless, the engine came to life and they drove down the street that Tae had indicated earlier.
"Would be a great idea to turn on the lights too. I mean it is getting dark and once we get out of this area, there won't be so many lights anymore to illuminate the streets. I guess you don't hail a death wish tonight?", Tae said cheekily. Jeon did not reply. Instead he fumbled on the buttons situated around the steering wheel. After a few unsuccessful tries, the car's lights lit up the pavement and the car disappeared into the darkness of the back alley.
