The White Rider

In Fangorn Forest, the air was thick with the scent of ancient trees and the eerie groans of the forest. Gimli crouched near a blood-stained leaf, tapping it with his finger before tasting the residue. "Orc blood," he announced, a grim expression on his face.

Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Liv, David, Saya, and Lily moved swiftly through the dense woods, their footsteps muffled by the thick undergrowth. Aragorn paused, examining the ground with a furrowed brow. "These are strange tracks," he remarked.

"They're definitely not from any animal," David agreed, his gaze scanning the surroundings.

"The air is so close in here," Gimli said, his voice tinged with discomfort. "This forest is old. Very old. Full of memory and anger," Legolas added, his eyes scanning the dense foliage with a sense of unease.

Deep groaning sounds reverberated through the forest, causing Gimli to instinctively raise his axe. "The trees are speaking to each other," Legolas said, his tone almost reverent.

"Gimli! Lower your axe," Aragorn commanded, his voice sharp. Gimli's eyes widened as he realized the significance of the sound.

"They have feelings, my friend. The Elves began it. Waking up the trees, teaching them to speak," Legolas explained, his voice carrying a hint of pride.

"Legolas, we don't need a whole history lesson," Liv quipped, her tone light and teasing. The group erupted into laughter, and David scooped Lily up off the ground, twirling her playfully.

"Your mother is crazy, isn't she?" David asked, grinning at Lily.

"Yeah, she is," Lily replied, giggling.

"I heard that," Liv said, narrowing her eyes playfully at David.

"David, why are you giving our daughter ideas?" Liv teased.

"David has a point. You don't want Lily to turn out like Liv," Legolas said with a mischievous glint in his eye.

Liv playfully punched him on the arm, and Legolas feigned injury. "Don't be so dramatic," Liv said, her eyes twinkling with amusement.

"Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about? Except the consistency of squirrel droppings," Gimli said, his attempt to change the subject met with chuckles from the group.

"Something's out there," Legolas suddenly said, his expression turning serious.

"What do you see?" Aragorn asked, his hand instinctively moving to the hilt of his sword.

Legolas peered into the gloom of the forest. "The White Wizard approaches," he said.

"Do not let him speak. He will put a spell on us," Aragorn warned, his grip tightening on his sword.

Gimli gripped his axe, Liv and David drew their katanas, Saya revealed the hidden arm blade from her sleeve, and Lily clung to her mother's side as they prepared for confrontation.

"We must be quick," Aragorn urged.

As they turned, a brilliant white light blazed before them. Gimli threw his axe, but it was deflected by an unseen force. Legolas fired an arrow, which was similarly thwarted. Aragorn's sword, David and Liv's katanas turned red hot, forcing them to drop their weapons. Saya's arm blade chipped under the light's power.

"Hey, I just had that sharpened," Saya muttered, annoyed.

"You are tracking the footsteps of two young hobbits," said a voice that was unmistakably Saruman's.

"Where are they?" Aragorn demanded.

"They passed this way the day before yesterday. They met someone they did not expect. Does that comfort you?" the White Wizard replied cryptically.

"Who are you? Show yourself!" Aragorn commanded.

The blinding light faded to reveal Gandalf, now clad in flowing white robes and holding a white staff. "It cannot be," Aragorn said in disbelief.

"Forgive me. I mistook you for Saruman," Legolas said, his voice tinged with relief.

"I am Saruman. Or rather, Saruman as he should have been," Gandalf said.

"You fell," Aragorn said.

"Through fire and water," Gandalf replied solemnly. "I've been sent back until my task is done."

"Gandalf," Aragorn said, his voice filled with awe.

"Gandalf? Yes. That's what they used to call me. Gandalf the Grey. That was my name. I am Gandalf the White. And I come back to you at the turn of the tide," Gandalf said.

Gandalf's gaze fell upon Liv, and he seemed to recognize her. "Liv, is that you?" he asked, a hint of surprise in his voice.

"It is me," Liv replied, her eyes wide with wonder.

"You've changed," Gandalf observed.

"Well, teenagers tend to do that," Liv responded with a smirk.

"I half expected Gandalf to be grumpy like the Third Hokage," David remarked, earning a playful smack from Liv.

"Babe, be nice," Liv said, shaking her head.

"Sorry about my boyfriend; he has no filter," Liv added with a sheepish grin.

Gandalf's gaze shifted to Lily, who was holding Liv's hand. "Who's the child?" Gandalf asked.

"My daughter," Liv answered proudly.

"Your boyfriend is her father, I assume?" Gandalf asked.

"Yes, he is," Liv confirmed.

"Mommy, can you carry me?" Lily asked, looking up at her mother with wide eyes.

"Go ask your dad," Liv said gently.

"And who's this other girl with you?" Gandalf inquired, his gaze falling on Saya.

"Oh, that's my cousin Saya. She's a total badass," Liv said with a grin.

As they walked through the forest, Gandalf now wore a grey cloak over his white robes. "One stage of your journey is over. Another begins. We must travel to Edoras with all speed," Gandalf said.

"Edoras? That is no short distance," Gimli pointed out.

"We hear of trouble in Rohan. It goes ill with the king," Aragorn said.

"Yes, and it will not be easily cured," Gandalf agreed.

"Then we have run all this way for nothing? Are we to leave those poor hobbits here in this horrid, dark, dank, tree-infested..." Gimli began, but another groan from the forest interrupted him. "I mean, charming, quite charming forest," he finished with a sheepish grin.

"It was more than mere chance that brought Merry and Pippin to Fangorn. A great power has been sleeping here for many, many years. The coming of Merry and Pippin will be like the falling of small stones... that starts an avalanche in the mountains," Gandalf said.

"In one thing you have not changed, dear friend. You still speak in riddles," Aragorn said with a faint smile.

"A thing is about to happen that has not happened since the Elder Days. The Ents are going to wake up... and find that they are strong," Gandalf said, his voice filled with foreboding.

"Strong? Oh, that's good," Gimli said, though his unease was evident.

The forest groaned again, a deep, resonant sound that seemed to shake the very air. "So stop your fretting, Master Dwarf. Merry and Pippin are quite safe. In fact, they are far safer than you are about to be," Gandalf assured them.

"This new Gandalf's more grumpy than the old one," Gimli said, his tone both puzzled and relieved.

"That makes two of us," David added with a wry smile.

Outside the forest, Gandalf whistled a long, high-pitched note. In response, a white horse came galloping toward them with majestic grace.

"That is one of the Mearas, unless my eyes are deceived by some spell," Legolas said.

"Shadowfax. He is lord of all horses and has been my friend through many dangers," Gandalf said as he approached the magnificent steed.

The group mounted the horses, and with a final glance at the ancient forest, they set off at a swift pace toward Edoras, the sound of Shadowfax's hooves echoing through the forest as they departed.
