Chapter 5~Zack
Maddy's POV

I was so excited to go to my first slumber party with Kelly and the others. I was going to tell Zack that I picked him today to go to the dance with. I did like Slater but I liked Zack even more. How could I get Zack to meet with Mrs. Mangoo where he would not learn that I was in foster care?

I did not want the other girls to know either they all came from normal families. The kind of life I longed for. But would never have thanks to my parents.

That was just the way that life was. But I could have normal friendships while I was here. Maybe I could stay here long enough to finish school here. Then when the time came to get a job I could rent a place here.

Who knew if Zack and I dated long term just say for example then we could get a place together here in town. If he did not go off to college though.

The only way I was ever going to get into a college was if I won a scholarship for that. And I was guessing that was not going to happen. I would have to work as hard as Jessie did with her studies.

I would have to talk to her and ask her if I could study with her sometime. Soon, I see Zack coming down the hall. Time to tell him the good news.

"Hey, Maddy! Make your choice yet?" He wants to know. He holds his books to his chest as he smiles with those beautiful eyes at me.

How could a girl say no to him?? "Yes Zack, my answer is yes" I tell him with a nod.

He grins. "Can we talk before the bell rings away from the others?" He asks me. He looked so serious.

"Sure, go for it. About the dance?" I ask him as he leads me some where private in the hall there.

"Yes, no" he sighs.

"What is it Zack!"

"About you!"

What about me?!

"Go on"

"Is it true? Are you in foster care Maddy?" He asks me softly. I gasp.

How did he know?!

"Zack how did you find that out? Did you follow me home from school?" I demanded to know with anger built in me.

"Well no..."

"Then how" I say. "Why do you know? And not that it is your business yes I am in foster care" I sigh. Great that lasted a whole half hour.

"Gee, I am sorry Maddy, when I like a girl I want to know everything about her. I kind of snooped in Mr. B's office when he was harping on me. And I found out" he admits.

He went through all that to learn about me?

"Zack can you please promise me one thing if you really care about me" I beg of him. "Anything Maddy" he agrees with a nod.

"Do not say anything to the others about it. It is embarrassing for others when they find out. They will not want to be my friend" I mutter as my cheeks blush with shame.

"Maddy that is not true" Zack tells me. "The right friends would understand and they would never do that to you" he points out.

"I have never stuck around long enough tp find anyone like that" I sigh.

"You should be friends with Slater he moved around a lot to" Zack informs me. "

"So I hear" I add.

"Your secret is safe with me Maddy, but I do think you should give the others a chance" he points out. Kelly comes along with the other girls.

I wanted to tell them but what would they really think of me? They might not want to be my friend. They were in the latest fashion and so popular with all the others.

"Thanks Zack I will think it over but I doubt that. And I doubt I will be here long enough to get to know anyone" I somberly say.

"You have to stay we have a dance to go to" he reminds me.

He was so kind. He touches my arm then smiles. His warm touch shoots through my jean jacket, as I smile back at him.

"Maddy! There you are! Everything is all set for the slumber party if my dumb brothers do not ruin it" Kelly tells me.

"So who are you taking to the dance? Zack or Slater?" Asks Lisa. "All the gangs are waiting for me to update them"

"Everyone?!" I mutter. "Was I that big a topic already?" I laugh.

"Honey, you are the new girl in town. And both the most important popular boys in town are already fighting over you! You have them eating out of your hands" she brags on me. "Well, if I must dish" I joke.

"You must" she demands.

"Tell us!" Kelly adds with a nod.

"Zack" I announce.

He goes yes with a happy grin.

"Good choice" says Jessie. "Slater is a pig" she warns me.

"Oink oink baby" speaks up Slater as he joins us.
"So, Maddy who are you taking to the dance?"

"Zack sorry Slater we connected already that is all" I say to him.

"Oh well, Kel are you free?" He asks Kelly.

"Sure Slater" she agrees with a nod.

Slater looks pleased as he walks off with Kelly to talk then the bell rings. I go to get my books from my locker. Zack walks with me.

"Want me to carry those?" He offers. I shake my head.

"No thanks" I giggle.

"Come on I will" he begs. I hand over my books to him to carry.

"Zack can I ask you one think though" I questioned him.

"Ask away!"

"Can you meet at my foster home? You have to meet Mrs. Mangoo so I can go to the dance" I explained to him.

"Sure, sure Maddy. I can do that" he agrees with a nod.

"One more thing though, as we agreed on. Do not bring anyone with you to the house. To meet them all. Not Slater, Kelly, Lisa anyone! Not even Screech" I warn him sternly. Or they will all find out"

"You have my word. Maddy you can trust in me. I will never let you down" he softly tells me.

The bell rings another warning sign. We better get to class or we would be marked tardy. And I wanted to go to my first dance. "Come on Zack so you are not late" I warn him sternly over the loud bell ringing a warning.

I grab him by the arm then lead the way to my class as he carried my books for me to my class. Things were looking up.

Time would tell if I could really trust Zack with my secret. I did not want to lose these friends. They were real ones. I had not had someone to count in in such a long time. It felt good. And I felt like I belonged here at Bayside.
