Chapter 65
●●●
There were many things Jungkook could still remember from the first time he had been at the waterpark, but he had completely forgotten how big everything was. The main room stretched across several floors and there were multiple pools in just that one room. In the middle of the hall was a big water slide that a lot of people were waiting in line for. He really wanted to go there first, but he also knew that it was probably better to wait for a less busy time to go down the waterslides. Maybe at some point in the afternoon or at noon since most people would probably be eating at that time.
"What do you think?" Jungkook turned around to Taehyung, who was standing there in his trunks, drenched after the shower they'd had to take before entering the pool area. While Jungkook could feel himself brimming with energy Taehyung didn't look even half as enthusiastic.
Instead, he was eyeing the pool a couple of meters to their left with clear distaste.
"It stinks."
That had to be expected. They had established that Taehyung didn't like chlorine at all. Jungkook grabbed his hand to lead him over to the area with deck chairs for most of the guests to rest in after they had powered themselves out in the pools.
"I'm sorry about that, but I hope you get used to it enough to ignore it. If it gets too bad though we can always leave." He placed their things down on two free chairs before turning back around to face Taehyung.
"No, it's okay. I'll live." Was Jungkook just imagining things or was Taehyung picking up his speech patterns and phrases? Maybe it was just the way people talked on TV, but Jungkook was pretty damn sure that the way he was talking had influenced Taehyung's human language.
"Aside from smelling badly it shouldn't be too big of a problem. Chlorine isn't really harmful in small doses." Jungkook reassured, realizing that maybe that statement didn't quite sound as encouraging as he'd wanted it to. "It's something they put in the water to keep it clean despite so many people going inside and the lack of proper water flow for long periods of time."
"So it is dangerous if there's more?" Taehyung looked even less enthusiastic now. Jungkook couldn't help but sigh.
"Yeah, kinda. Not that they would ever add that much, but theoretically it would be dangerous if there was more. Anyways..." Jungkook quickly searched for anything else they could talk about. He spotted the pool that was closest to them and realized a detail about it that offered him a distraction for the siren. "Have you ever been to a wave pool?" Obviously Taehyung couldn't have been. After all, the first swimming pool he had ever been at had been with Jungkook.
Taehyung shook his head. "What is that?"
Jungkook smiled, gesturing for Taehyung to follow him. He moved towards the pool in question as he started explaining. "Well, I know you know what waves are. As you can imagine pools like this don't usually have waves on their own since the water has no reason to move. But water that moves tends to be more fun than water that doesn't. Most people can't afford traveling to the beach and don't have it just around the corner. Also it's safer. Who knows what creatures might lurk by the beach." Jungkook shot Taehyung a pointed gaze and Taehyung grinned cheekily. His teeth flashing in the light a little.
"So that's why they made pools that imitate waves. It's probably not as strong as some of the waves you have witnessed before, but they can pack a punch."
"Waves are fun." Taehyung muttered, his eyes glinting a little when he looked at Jungkook and chuckled. "Hey, for once humans and their hobbies do make a little sense."
Jungkook couldn't help smiling back. "Who would have guessed I'd ever hear you say that."
"Fuck." Jungkook spluttered as he spat out the water he'd just gotten in his mouth and wiped his eyes. He had underestimated the strength of this wave pool. No wonder not many children were in here. They had made it to about half of the depth, and Jungkook could just about stand.
"You okay?" Taehyung asked from behind him, clearly not struggling at all unlike Jungkook. Instead the waves almost seemed to part when they reached him. Maybe they actually did. Jungkook was sure it wouldn't have made much of a difference because Taehyung was clearly in his element. His body moved along with the water as if it was his second nature... which it was.
"Yeah, I am." Jungkook muttered, his nose burning from the water that had shot up his nostrils. He wasn't going to let the pool win over him. He wasn't a child. He could swim. He was better than this.
There were a few other people in the pool, but most of them stayed at the shallow end where the waves might be stronger but you also had footing. Aside from him and Taehyung there were only three other people in their part of the pool, two of which were clearly a couple and stayed at the edge of the pool, flirting. The last one was also fighting for his life but clearly seemed to have fun.
"You sure?" Taehyung asked the exact second Jungkook swallowed a mouthful of water again. He would have felt embarrassed if it weren't for the hint of amusement playing on Taehyung's face. As long as the siren was having fun Jungkook was all good. He certainly didn't seem to be judging Jungkook.
"Yeah, all good." Jungkook turned around to Taehyung. "I might not be the sexiest but..." Another wave pushed him back and right into Taehyung. At least for a second that seemed to startle him a little and he got some water in the face too. Jungkook felt his hands press against his chest, holding him steady.
"You're not the sexiest but?" Taehyung asked, now obviously amused. He was holding Jungkook in place as another big wave crashed over them and Jungkook had been right. The waves really did part around the siren. Now that he was this close to Taehyung, faces just centimetres apart, he was having an easier time too. Or maybe Taehyung was intentionally helping him. Jungkook could feel himself blushing, both at the proximity and the fact that Taehyung felt like he needed to help him. Like Jungkook was a child.
"I might not be the sexiest, but it's fun and I'm not going to drown." Jungkook declared, trying to keep his voice steady even when the waves kept pushing him closer to Taehyung.
"You sure? It doesn't look like it. I've seen quite a lot of people drown and this isn't thaaat far off." Taehyung teased.
Jungkook punched his shoulder and Taehyung smiled cheekily. This sure was different from the first time Jungkook and Taehyung had been in the water together. Taehyung had clearly gotten softer with him and Jungkook wasn't really afraid anymore. There was no reason for it. Not when he could feel the waves split around them as Taehyung made sure Jungkook wouldn't get any more water in his face, at least as long as they talked.
A weird tension built up as they stared at each other in silence. Something that had happened weirdly often last night when they'd been drunk, but Jungkook had been sure that had happened exactly because of that. But now they no longer were and yet Jungkook couldn't get himself to say anything as Taehyung looked right at him, their faces only centimeters apart.
For a second, just for a second, Jungkook thought he was going to kiss him. Just for a little moment he allowed himself to forget about all the reasons why that would never happen as he felt Taehyung pull him a little closer, his hands on his waist. He couldn't read the expression on Taehyung's face at all. It had been a while since he had struggled with that.
And then the moment ended harshly when the girl from the couple a few meters to their left screeched as her boyfriend threw her into the water, and just like that the spell was broken. Jungkook could hear the loud rushing of water around him again, felt the strong waves tug at his body as Taehyung glanced at the girl and then averted his eyes.
"Be careful." He moved his hand a little and a wave that was about double the size of the other waves split all around them. Jungkook was pretty sure that one would have made him lose his sense of orientation for at least for a couple of seconds.
"Thank you." Jungkook cleared his throat, moving away, feeling awkward. He knew he was overinterpreting these moments, but he couldn't stop himself from hoping that maybe, just a little, Taehyung liked him too. It was wishful thinking but Jungkook kept getting carried away when Taehyung looked at him like that. Looked at him like he was something special.
Jungkook got his chance to pay Taehyung back for his little favor at the pool when they went down the water slide. They shared a ring to slide down with, and when the tunnel suddenly opened into transparent material when they were still a few stories up, Jungkook was the one to reassuringly hold Taehyung. He knew the siren didn't like showing that he was scared, but based on the fact that he had been gripping onto Jungkook's leg a lot more than usual, Jungkook was pretty sure Taehyung had appreciated the hug.
Still, Jungkook was surprised when Taehyung asked him to go down the waterslide again and again. Whether that was because he wanted to get over his fear or because it had actually been fun Jungkook had a hard time telling, but either way both ended up being true.
By the last time Taehyung was clearly enjoying himself and barely even reacted anymore when the waterslide opened.
Even if he acted like it wasn't a big feat, Taehyung was clearly exhausted after going down the waterslide so many times. They made their way over to their deck chairs to take a bit of a break from all the running around. Jungkook expected Taehyung to lie down on his own chair, but he didn't. Instead he cuddled up on Jungkook, just like he had done the previous night, no hesitation whatsoever. Jungkook sure had gotten brother status as it seemed. He was now Taehyung's personal pillow.
Within seconds Jungkook watched Taehyung doze off, clearly even more exhausted than Jungkook was. Understandable. The thousand-year-old siren had just faced his one true fear. He deserved some peace and quiet.
Jungkook on the other hand pulled out his phone from his bag. Mainly to read a little, he couldn't watch videos when Taehyung was sleeping on top of him, but then he noticed that Jimin had tried to call him. Curious, he typed a message since he didn't want to wake Taehyung up.
Jungkook
You called?
For a few seconds nothing happened, then the message got the two little ticks that told him Jimin had read it. And then his phone screen lit up as Jimin once again called him. Jungkook sighed but decided to pick up and just be quiet while he did.
"Yes?"
"Jungkookie! How are you? How is your crush doing?" Jimin exclaimed in a high pitched voice and Jungkook could feel himself blush at the unexpected question. Before he could answer he heard another voice in the back saying something he couldn't properly understand and Jimin responding.
"I'm not bullying him! I'm actually curious! I gotta know what my big brother is up to."
The other voice said something back but this time Jimin didn't answer him. Instead he focused back on Jungkook.
"Sorry, Yoongi is worried you might think I'm trying to tease you. I'm not, just so that is clear. How are you and Taehyung doing?" Jimin spoke in a softer, less energetic tone now, probably to reassure him that he meant it.
"Well, not much has changed since this morning. We were drunk yesterday and he was really touchy and now we're sober and he's currently sleeping on me, so really, it's basically the same." Jungkook sent a glance down to make sure Taehyung was actually sleeping, but the boy's breathing was slow and steady. Jungkook was pretty sure he was deep asleep but he still spoke as quietly as he could.
"He's sleeping on you? Where are you?"
"In a waterpark. Resting area." Jungkook explained shortly.
"Wait, you're in public and he's sleeping? Like, there are people all around you?" Jimin gasped dramatically and Jungkook furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. He had somewhat started to understand Taehyung, but Jimin still confused him sometimes.
"I mean, I guess? There are some."
"Show me!" Jimin giggled and just seconds later Jungkook startled when a button popped up that Jimin requested a video call. A little hesitantly Jungkook accepted and Jimin's face appeared on screen. He looked excited. Jungkook could see Yoongi sitting in the background playing on his phone, clearly acting like he wasn't listening, but also obviously listening.
Jungkook angled the camera so Jimin could see Taehyung, who was still sleeping on his chest. Jimin's smile grew even wider. "So he's actually sleeping?"
"At least he seems to be." Jimin hadn't had this extreme of a reaction the last time Jungkook had told him Taehyung was being cuddly so he wondered what was different now. He realized that he could just ask. It felt a little awkward but he wanted to know.
"Why the excitement?"
"I think you might not be alone with your little crush." Jungkook's eyes widened and he quickly turned Jimin's volume down.
"Could you not say that out loud!" Jungkook whisper-yelled, feeling the blood rush to his face. If Taehyung had been awake he totally would have heard that. His heart was racing. He couldn't even consider the possibility of what Jimin was saying being true. As long as he believed he didn't have a chance he also couldn't be disappointed. He cleared his throat.
"What makes you think that?"
Jimin smiled widely. "I was already suspicious of it when you told me he was being cuddly with you, but this is above being cuddly." Jimin leaned closer to the phone before whispering, as if that would change anything about how loud it was. "Right now, he's not just sleeping next to you... he's also trusting you to keep him safe in an environment that he feels unsafe in. I doubt he'd sleep in public with me next to him and I'm probably better at keeping him safe when it comes to strength... no offense." Jimin grinned cheekily.
Jungkook's heart was racing in his chest. He couldn't allow himself to believe Jimin's words, as much as he wanted to.
"He probably just thinks I know humans well enough to trust me with this."
Jimin rolled his eyes. "Believe what you want to believe, but I shall believe what I believe. And I think you have at most a week before Taehyung confesses or something. So be prepared." Jimin giggled and winked and Jungkook could see Yoongi sigh in the background.
That's what he felt like right now. He wanted to sigh. He didn't want Jimin to give him false hopes. Not when he was already struggling enough with his emotions as it was.
"Remember my words... a week at most." Jimin repeated in a dramatic voice, like the one you would hear in a movie regarding oracles and bad prophecies. Certainly not this though. Once he was done he broke out into a smile, waving at Jungkook and speaking in his normal voice again.
"You can call me anytime to update me on things, but I think I'll leave you two alone again. Have fun in Seoul!" Jimin grinned broadly and then the screen went black and Jungkook was left to wonder what had just happened and what the implications were.
One week. There was no way Taehyung would confess that he had feelings. And certainly not within a week. And yet, as he laid there, feeling Taehyung slowly breathe in and out on top of him, he had a hard time stopping his thoughts from wandering.
What if Jimin was right... if Taehyung had feelings for him... what would that mean for the two of them?
