Chapter 19
●●●
Taehyung was staring up at the stars, taking in all the small dots of sparkling light as he let himself drift in the familiar waters. Slowly he breathed in. This was right. These were the scents he was so familiar with. The noises he had heard all of his life.
The waves tugging at his body, currents slowly pulling him on their ways.
Here, out in the ocean, Taehyung felt at home.
He didn't like that he only got to swim so rarely. He knew it wasn't Jungkook's fault but it was frustrating. Taehyung missed the ocean. He had no idea how Jimin had been able to stay out there for this long.
Taehyung had only been with Jungkook for a month now and it was exhausting. Especially because Jungkook always told him to come back in a couple of hours. Taehyung never got the chance to actually go deeper.
There was no way he could risk leaving for long enough for Jungkook to go tell on him. He knew that even if Jungkook somehow managed to convince the police sirens were real they didn't have anything on him... but Jungkook also knew where Jimin lived.
He groaned, dipping down into the water, enjoying the stream of it around him. Maybe he should just kill Jungkook. The human world was quite boring, at least when it came to day to day life.
He had no idea why Jungkook even did that to himself. Going to uni, again and again, spending most of his day there. The only other thing he did was watch TV and sometimes take Taehyung out for food or drinks... it was such a dull life.
But Taehyung hadn't seen enough of the human world yet. There were a few things they had decided they would do so Taehyung was going to wait for those... but that happiness Jimin had shown him... Taehyung didn't get it.
Taehyung heard a noise by the beach when he resurfaced again. Maybe a few meters away from him he could see a dock, a little girl sitting by the edge, playing with a doll, talking to the toy in a hushed tone.
For a minute or so Taehyung watched, but there didn't seem to be anyone else around, no parents, no supervisor, even though the girl couldn't have been older than six years old. Taehyung had noticed that before. In this town and overall in the whole area around where Jungkook lived everyone was kind of... people really weren't too careful. Especially when it came to the ocean.
When he moved closer the girl noticed him, lifting her little hand to wave at him. "Hello, mister!"
Taehyung couldn't help but smile as he moved closer. She was too trusting. Like everyone here. Probably because there usually wasn't anything that was much of a thread.
"Hey." He could tell the exact moment he came into the light because her eyes widened, her little mouth popping open as she stared at him.
"You have weird eyes." When Taehyung grinned she gasped. "And teeth!"
Taehyung flicked his tail to get a little closer again and the girl quickly moved a couple of steps back from the edge of the dock. Smart child. At least she wasn't that careless.
"Do I look weird to you?" He asked, grabbing the edge of the dock with both hands to look at her. The little girl was holding her small doll tightly to her chest, her eyes never leaving Taehyung and his black claws as she nodded.
In a swift motion Taehyung hefted his body over the edge of the dock, leaving part of his tail to hang into the water below.
Her eyes widened at the sight of his tail, little hands grasping over her mouth, the doll still stuck between her body and her elbow. If it weren't for his sensitive hearing Taehyung probably wouldn't have heard her whispered "You're a mermaid."
Slowly he brought his clawed finger to his lips, as if telling her to be quiet. "Don't tell anyone."
His eyes wandered over her body. She was thin. Small and thin, not exactly that... filling.
"They are pretty, aren't they?" Taehyung moved his tail a little, his scales glistening in the low lighting of the dock. There was a flash of lightning somewhere in the distance. Taehyung furrowed his brows... it didn't smell like rain.
The girl caught his attention again when she nodded, half hiding her face behind the doll.
"Very pretty... they glitter." She giggled.
Taehyung smiled, looking at them himself. "They look even prettier up close. Wanna come over here?" He had to keep focused.
He opened his hand as if to invite her. She was clearly still nervous, her eyes carefully taking in his fingers. For a few seconds, she hesitated and Taehyung was worried she wouldn't come over at all, but then she took a hesitant step forward. And then another.
There was another flash but this time Taehyung ignored it. He just needed her to get a little closer...
He smiled at her reassuringly. Even if she was thin he could probably go for another week if he just got her to...
Taehyung startled when he heard voices at the beach. The girl turned around as well, both of their eyes following as a group of drunk teenagers half ran half stumbled over the sand. They kept yelling at each other and laughing, some of them pulling their t-shirts over their heads to drop them in the sand as they made their way over to the water.
When Taehyung's gaze landed on the girl again she was already back to focusing on his tail. "You need to hide, mermaid! They can't see you, right?"
Taehyung chuckled, shaking his head. She had no idea. "Yeah right... I should hide." He watched as the teenagers jumped into the water. "You're so lucky and you don't even know it." He turned back to the girl. "It was nice meeting you."
And then he pushed himself off the dock, slipping back into the black water. Getting to where the teenagers were playing took him only a few flicks with his tail. All of them were drunk. He could smell the alcohol from meters away. Their obvious staggering in the shallow waters just made it clearer.
He didn't go too close. Well aware that one of them was going to go farther into the water soon. One of them would be stupid enough... and Taehyung was going to wait for that instead of catching everyone's attention.
Because while he didn't have much of a problem with whoever-he-was-going-to-take's friends coming after him, he preferred feeding relatively stress-free. And he knew that wouldn't be possible if the others followed after him.
So instead he watched and watched as they played around, slowly moving into the deeper water, mainly because of the ball they were tossing around. And then one of them tossed the ball too far and Taehyung knew that this was his chance. One of the guys went to get it, his arms moving slowly, probably due to the alcohol, as he swam over to the ball.
It took Taehyung maybe a second to get underneath him and then he pulled him under the surface. The second he did the guy started kicking, but Taehyung simply ignored it, his tail flicking to drag him away from his friends, farther into the ocean.
He could feel the boy struggle, try to get Taehyung to let go, going as far as stomping on his hand, but it didn't hurt. Instead of letting go Taehyung buried his claws in the guy's ankle. The thrashing around got worse and Taehyung could hear him scream underwater, but he didn't care.
Once he was far away enough from those guys to avoid being found he let the boy's ankle go, who tried to move to the surface just like everyone did. Hasty hand movements, hardly moving his right leg, probably because of the pain.
Taehyung didn't let him go. Instead he followed him, easily slipping around him and wrapping his tail around his body.
The guy let out a gurgling scream again, flailing his arms and trying to hit Taehyung, but Taehyung easily caught them, holding them in place, which made it impossible for the guy to move. Not that it made much of a difference. The human didn't know but they were deep enough already to make it rather unlikely for him to be able to make it back to the surface before his lungs gave in.
Nevertheless the guy fought with all his strength, wriggling in Taehyung's hold even though Taehyung knew it had to be painful as hell. He just made his scales cut deeper. Could this idiot pass out already?
He tried pulling his hand out of Taehyung's hold again, but Taehyung simply snapped his bone right where he was holding him. Another scream. At least the guy would run out of oxygen soon. Taehyung let go of his hand, there was no longer any need for him to hold that. He wouldn't be able to do anything with it anyways.
Slowly the wriggling got weaker and weaker until the movement ceased completely. Taehyung waited for another minute or so until he could feel his heart stop beating before letting go. The water smelled sweet due to the blood flowing out from all the cuts on the boy's body as he took his prey in.
The guy didn't have too much fat either, but at least he wasn't thin. And he was tall. Overall Taehyung was happy with the outcome of his hunt.
When he pulled the body deeper into the ocean, there was no struggle left anymore.
