The 'Ranbir' effect

[Author's note - This is my Rakshabandhan gift to my sweet little sister Khushi. Hope u like it. Also hoping all my readers will like it too.]

Since it was a holiday and there was no hurry to get ready for either college or office, Prachi was lying awake on her bed. She was lost deep in thoughts.

A sweet and melodious tone brought her out of her reverie with such an abruptness that it took her usually brilliant brain a few moments to register that it was the tone of her own phone.

Without looking she picked the device up and accepted the call.

"Yes, Ranbir?" Prachi didn't even glance at the caller id.

"It's my new number. I haven't even given it to anyone. How do you know it's me?" Ranbir's jaw dropped in astonishment as he checked if he had made a video call by mistake.

"Because you are the only person in my life who is inconsiderate enough to call me so early on a sunday." Prachi's voice was solemn but there was a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.

"Hawww! Prachi!!!" Ranbir huffed childishly.

Prachi could no longer contain her amusement and started giggling.

As always, the melodious sound of her laughter washed away all his irritation and brought a charming smile on his lips.

"Now stop smiling all by yourself. Anyone can think you are crazy." Prachi grinned.

"You are not hiding here somewhere, are you Prachi? How do you know I was smiling?" Ranbir began to look for her in his room.

"Because when you stop talking for some time it usually means you are smiling. And I am still at home." Prachi rolled her eyes.

"Hmm. Prachi do you know when someone comes to know about what someone else is doing without even seeing?" Ranbir smirked

"When?" Prachi frowned in confusion

"When this someone keeps thinking the most about that someone. So, Prachi Arora, admit that you keep thinking about me the most. And while you are at it, also admit that you are completely....... under my spell." Ranbir grinned devilishly, already knowing what her answer would be.

"In your dreams." Prachi showed a pink tongue to her own reflection in the mirror opposite her.

"What a wonderful dream that would be!" Ranbir sighed dreamily.

A rosy hue coloured Prachi's cheeks at the wistfulness in Ranbir's voice. She began to twirl a stray lock of hair around her finger.

"You look even more beautiful when you blush and more endearing when twirl locks of your hair around your finger." Ranbir smiled

Now it was Prachi's turn to be astonished and look around to find any trace of his presence near her.

"How did you know what I was doing?" Prachi was still looking behind the curtains.

"Because I keep thinking the most about you." Ranbir's every word rang with honesty and sincerity making Prachi blush again.

"You are crazy." Prachi smiled shyly

"Crazy for you." Came Ranbir's instant reply.

"Stop flirting and tell me why you called me this early in the morning." Prachi tried to conceal her shyness at his blatant declarations.

"I wasn't flirting. And you know it. And as for calling you, mom wants me to buy some essentials for a religious occasion and you know that I know nothing about all these. So, please come with me to the mall and please don't say no. Please please please." Ranbir pleaded making a puppy face.

"You really are helpless without me." Prachi giggled.

"Remember that. So never leave me alone." Ranbir smiled but his voice told her it wasn't a joke.

"I won't ever." Prachi promised.

There was silence on both sides but each could feel the other's happiness due to their togetherness even though they could not see each other.

"I will pick you up after an hour?" Ranbir inquired.

"Fine. Bye." Prachi agreed.

"Bye for now chikchiki." Ranbir chuckled.

"Baklu" Prachi cut the call with a smile and dashed to the washroom.

An hour later

Prachi had just finished wearing the earrings when a sudden gust of wind blew a few strands of her hair which got entangled in her earring.

She was struggling to disentangle them when Ranbir sauntered in.

He stopped dead. He was mesmerized seeing the exquisite beauty in front of him.

Prachi was wearing a simple yet elegant full sleeved white anarkali suit accompanied by white sandals and white earrings.

She was looking as beautiful as a fairy princess.

Her hiss of frustration at her inability to disentangle her hair from the earring brought Ranbir out of his reverie.

With a smile he walked towards the girl who was so engrossed in the task at hand that she failed to notice his presence.

"Need help?" Ranbir mumbled leaning close from behind Prachi.

Startled, she whirled around and sighed in relief. Then grimaced as she felt the tug on her hair due to the sudden movement.

"Yes, please." Prachi looked at him with an adorable puppy face.

Ranbir turned his attention to the earring. He leaned closer to her while trying to carefully disentangle the strands of her hair without breaking them.

His warm breath on her nape was making her go restless and she couldn't help squirming.

Ranbir smirked as he realized that his closeness was affecting her. He deliberately brushed her cheek and ear with his fingers while concentrating on his task.

A shiver coursed through Prachi's body as a sensation her innocence had never known before coursed through her every single vein.

Ranbir smiled as he received his answer long before he completed the given task.

Carefully removing her hair from the earring, he tucked them behind her. His fingers brushed the sensitive spot behind her ear, making her step back with a shy 'Thank You'.

"What happened, Prachi?" Ranbir inquired innocently.

"Nothing." Prachi was looking everywhere but at him.

"Admit it, Prachi, you are getting affected by my closeness." Ranbir smirked.

"No." Prachi was still not looking at him but concentrated on some point slightly in his right.

Ranbir's lips curved into a devilish smile as he began to advance towards her while she began to retreat.

"Sure?" Ranbir raised one brow.

"Yes." Prachi was still not ready to give in.

Ranbir advanced even more towards Prachi as she kept retreating. Soon she collided with the dresser.

Ranbir leaned closer. His breath was now mingling with her breath. He looked straight into her eyes.

"You still won't feel anything if I come this close to you?" Ranbir leaned even closer and now there was a breath's distance between Pranbir.

His closeness was playing havoc with Prachi's senses. There was a strange fluttering sensation in her stomach. Her cheeks heated up and she lowered her lashes, veiling her eyes from his penetrating gaze.

"Not even now?" Ranbir rubbed his nose against her nose

Prachi sighed as she experienced a strange contentment brought about by his touch. The logical part of her brain pointed out that she should ask him to step away from her but her heart just refused to agree.

While she was engrossed in the conflict between heart and brain, Sahana's loud ringtone penetrated the haze around her senses. Prachi's eyes flew open and she pushed Ranbir away lightly. Ranbir, who had heard Sahana's voice drawing nearer, stepped back immediately.

"Shall we leave." Ranbir looked at Prachi

"Yeah, let's go." Prachi finally looked at him after composing herself.

However, her lovely features were still tinged with a crimson hue making Ranbir laugh softly but he immediately stopped as she narrowed her eyes at him.

Picking the white clutch from the dresser, Prachi trotted off leaving Ranbir to follow her and yet again a mischievous smile crept up on his lips.
