The next morning Kanan shook his son's shoulder gently to wake him. Ezra yawned as he stretched.
"Morning Papa," he blinked sleepily at him.
"Good morning, you need to get up and get dressed. We need to hurry and get to town before that storm hits," Kanan said a hint of worry in his tone.
Ezra sat up and tried to see out the window but Kanan had pulled off his night shirt.
"Come on Ezra," Kanan said turning to grab a shirt and pants.
"Papa, why are you so worked up over a storm? We've been caught in them before," Ezra said slipping his pants on.
"Yes, I know but I have a bad feeling about this one. Something's not right," Kanan said handing the boy his shirt.
"What do you mean?" Ezra asked fumbling with a button.
"I'm not entirely sure myself, but trust me little one, this is one storm that no one will ever forget," Kanan said nodding his approval and going back into the kitchen.
Ezra pulled on his boots and joined his father.
Twenty minutes later a large clap of thunder sounded causing Ezra to jump.
"Easy Kid," Kanan said getting up and looking out the window.
He could see black clouds getting closer.
"Well Son, looks like we are going to get wet. That storm is brewing faster than I thought."
Ezra finished eating and stood up when another clap of thunder sounded. He yelped and ran to Kanan who knelt down and caught him holding tight.
"Sh...it's alright, Papa's here, papa's got you," Kanan said rubbing the little boy's back.
"I don't like thunder," Ezra mumbled into his shirt.
"Sh...., I know," Kanan soothed as he picked him up and carried him to the table.
"Now, how about you and me wash these dishes up and then get out of here?"
Together the two finished up the house chores. Kanan looked out the window again to see the clouds even darker. Grabbing a bag of their clothes, he walked back into the living room to see Ezra curled up in his chair.
"Ready to go?"
Ezra looked up and then toward the window.
"I guess," his voice was shaking.
Kanan took his hand and led him out of the house securing the door. The wind had picked up, and it made Kanan uneasy. He knew the signs of a storm and this clearly was going to be a bad one. Quickly he ushered Ezra into the barn and the child whimpered.
"Easy Son, Phantom can sense your fear," Kanan told him pointing.
Ezra looked over at the smaller smoke grey pony fidgeting in his stall. While Kanan saddled up Depa, Ezra walked over to Phantom.
"Don't worry Phantom, Papa always protects me and he says that you, Lightning and Force will be safe in the barn," he said reaching up and rubbing the horse's soft nose.
Kanan grinned, Ezra never ceased to amaze him. He may be five, but sometimes he could act wise beyond his years and then remind Kanan that he was still a young child. A child that Kanan would protect no matter how old he got.
"Let's go Ezra," he said as he finished putting everything into the saddle bags and picked the boy up.
"They will be safe, won't they Papa?"
"Don't worry Son, they will be alright," Kanan said sitting him on the saddle and leading them out.
The storm had gotten closer and Kanan could see lightening flashing. Latching the door tightly, he quickly swung into the saddle and took off towards town. Unfortunately the rain caught them. Wrapping the reins around the saddle horn, Kanan wrapped his son in his jacket, hoping to shield him. He felt Ezra dig his little hands deep into his sides, hanging on for dear life. Kanan urged Depa faster and prayed that they made it there safely.
Finally they made to town soaking wet, but in one piece.
"Rex! Get those two off that horse and get her down to the stable," Zeb ordered as he came out onto the porch. Kanan slid out of the saddle clutching Ezra tight. Rex steadied the man when he stumbled and Kanan nodded his thanks. Zeb grabbed the bag and followed the two inside.
"Got caught didn't ya," he chuckled.
"Was hoping we wouldn't," Kanan grimaced as he knelt down and undid his jacket to reveal a damp child.
"You ok?"
Ezra looked up and nodded his head with a slight shiver.
"Cold," he mumbled.
Kanan quickly picked him up and sat him down by the roaring fire. Grabbing a towel, Kanan dried the boy's hair and then wrapped a blanket around his shivering form.
"Zeb, I thought you had to leave?" Kanan asked as he turned back to the marshal.
"Well, we have to wait until the rain stops so we can leave," Zeb shrugged his shoulders
Ezra reached up for Kanan, and he picked him up again. The boy may get made fun of at school but he loved snuggling into his father's warm hold. It made him feel safe and secure and that was just fine with him.
Kanan frowned looking out the window as he leaned against the desk, holding Ezra tight to him.
"What's with you? I haven't seen you so worked up before," Zeb commented.
Kanan looked down at the child snuggled against his chest and then glanced outside again.
"The last time I saw a storm like this was five years ago. It was two days after I had found Ezra. The night that it happened, I had just put him to bed. Granted I was only fifteen and still had no idea how I was going to find someone to take care of him. But that night, that was the night I realized that if I lost that poor baby, I would die."
Flashback
Thunder boomed making the windows rattle. Kanan looked out as the infant began to fuss.
"Hey come on Kid, it's not going to do us any good for both us to be grumpy," he joked hoping to calm the baby down.
Ezra's crying only got worse.
"What's the matter? Huh, Ezra? Are you hungry? Sleepy?"
The teen sighed as that didn't seem to help so he picked the child up and began to rock him. The baby calmed down a little but still whimpered when thunder sounded.
"Oh I get it! You're afraid of the storm," Kanan said softly. "Don't worry little one, I'm not gonna let anything happen to you, I promise."
Ezra just stared up at him. Kanan chuckled softly and went to lay him back down when the window blew out.
Clutching the infant to him, Kanan dove and waited for gun fire but all he heard was Ezra's crying and someone busting through his door. Kanan looked up to see the gunslinger Janus Kasmir rush in and grab his arm.
"Come on Kid, we need to get to shelter!"
Kanan nodded before tightening the blanket around the baby.
"Janus!" He called after the outlaw. "What's happening?"
"A twister."
Present
The tornado had tore through the town killing several citizens including Kasmir. The outlaw had thanked him for being his friend and told him to care for the child, giving Kanan his gun. Kanan would always remember watching Janus breathe his last with a smile on his face. The man shook his head trying to rid his thoughts of that night.
"You ok?" Zeb asked.
"Yeah, I just remembered that was also the night I lost a real good friend," Kanan said planting a soft kiss on the boy's head.
The older man smiled at the actions and sighed in frustration.
"What's wrong?"
"The problem that I am leaving you in, is about a mother on the run," Zeb replied sitting at his desk.
Kanan and Ezra eyed each other before taking a seat.
"What are you talking about?"
Zeb growled before taking a piece of paper out of his desk.
"A woman came by yesterday, saying that she was in need of some help. She said that her and her daughter were running from an abusive fiancé."
"Then why don't she break up with him?" Ezra asked.
"I asked that, she said that the situation is so dire that she didn't know what to do."
Kanan fingered his goatee in thought.
"Any chances of this man showing up?"
"No clue, but she sounded slightly worried," Zeb said as he handed the wanted poster to Kanan.
He took it and studied it. Ezra studied it as well before squeaking and burying his face against Kanan's shirt.
"What's wrong Buddy?"
"Scary," was the only word he could understand.
Kanan looked down at the picture of Thomas E. Radical, when finally it all clicked.
"Is he the one you have been dreaming about?"
Ezra clutched his shirt tighter. Kanan placed the poster down and wrapped his arms around his son.
"Sh...it's ok Ezra, it's ok. You're safe, you're safe in my arms Baby," he whispered.
Zeb sighed softly before getting up and looking out the window.
"Looks like the storm is stopping."
Kanan got up, walking over to the window too.
"Or just getting started," he commented cradling the boy's head against his neck.
