First Encounter

Hello everyone! I am so glad that all of you are enjoy this story. Please enjoy the next part.

Thirty minutes later Zeb shuddered as he got ready to board the train.

"Relax will ya," Kanan chuckled readjusting his grip on the child in his arms.

"Sorry don't like trains is all," the man commented

Ezra sighed as he listened to the conversation. He looked over Kanan's shoulder and spotted a young girl a couple of years older than him staring back.

"Papa," he whispered.

"What is it?" Kanan asked looking down.

The boy looked back over his shoulder and Zeb followed his lead.

"Well, seems like Ezra found the young mother and her daughter," he chuckled.

The group walked over to introduce themselves.

"Marshall Orrelious," the woman greeted.

"Hera Syndulla, I would like to introduce my best friend and my stand in, Kanan Jarrus and his son, Ezra," Zeb introduced.

"Ma'am," Kanan greeted with a tip of the hat.

"Hi," Ezra smiled.

"Charmed, this is my daughter Sabine," Hera said placing a hand on the girls head. "Wait, stand in, Marshal, are you leaving?"

"Unfortunately yes, I have important business to attend to but Kanan is fully capable of handling any conflict that comes," Zeb said reassuringly.

Hera stared critically at the father and son and seemed impressed.

"I'm sure he will," she said as the train whistle blew.

"Uh Zeb, that's your cue Buddy," Kanan chuckled.

The man blanched.

"Zeb you're not scared are you?" Ezra asked innocently.

Zeb looked at Kanan who silently asked the same question.

"No, I'm Marshal Garazeb Orrelious and I am not scared of a little train," he said marching over to the locomotive.

"Sure," Kanan chuckled.

"He seems completely fine," Hera said watching.

"Just watch," Kanan grinned glancing back.

"3...2...1...," Ezra counted off.

Then they heard,

"I hate trains."

Kanan and Ezra laughed as the poor man boarded the train and waved as it left.

"Why would you laugh if he is your best friend?" Sabine asked.

"Because Zeb is funny," Ezra giggled.

"Yeah but we shouldn't laugh at his fear, should we Son?" Kanan asked rubbing his back.

Ezra raised Kanan's signature eyebrow at him before burying his face into his shoulder hoping to contain his giggles. Kanan shook his head before turning back to the woman.

"We're heading back to the office if you two would like to join us," he offered.

"Thank you, I would like to discuss a few things if possible," Hera said taking her daughter's hand.

"Right this way."

Kanan sat Ezra on his feet as they entered the Marshal's office.

"Marshall Jarrus."

"Please call me Kanan," the man said sitting against the desk.

"If you call me Hera," she said with a smile.

Ezra stared up at his father in confusion. He could see the way Kanan smiled at the woman and he didn't know how he felt about it. Kanan took notice of Ezra's stare and decided to get the kids out of the room so he could talk.

"Hey EJ, why don't you take Sabine and go over to Annie's. Get yourselves some candy or whatnot and put it on my account," Kanan said kneeling down to the boy's level.

Ezra snorted softly and seemed to think before smiling.

"Ok Papa, come on Sabine," he said holding out his hand.

The girl looked up at her mother to see what she said.

"Go on my Darling," Hera nodded.

Ezra reached out again to take Sabine's hand. The little girl hesitated but decided to accept it. Once the kids were out of the office Kanan turned back to the woman.

"So Zeb told me the problem but I'm gonna need a little more information."

Hera sighed and looked him in the eye.

"My daughter and I have been running for quite some time, I have learned not to trust a lot of people with out them proving themselves first. How can I trust you?"

"You trusted my son to take your daughter over to the general store," Kanan chuckled.

"Fair enough," she smiled. "What do you need to know?"

"What are the chances of your former groom to be showing up?"

The woman's green eyes widened in fear before taking a shaking breath.

"Very likely, no matter how far we go he keeps finding us."

Kanan sighed, he knew how she felt. It took years of running and eventually finding Janus before he felt safe enough to sleep at night. Placing a hand on her shoulder, he gave her a soft smile.

"Your troubles are over Ma'am. No matter what I will make sure you and your daughter will be free from this maniac."

Hera smiled before giving him a big hug.

Over in the general store, Sabine was doing her own investigation.

"You like to ask a lot of questions," Ezra said as Sabine said something else.

"Yeah but that's how you learn things," Sabine said looking at the jars.

"That's what Papa says but I also learn by watching," Ezra said going up to Annie.

"Well good morning sweet baby boy, where is that handsome father of yours?"

Ezra rolled his eyes and fixed the owner with a sweet smile that he had seen his father do so many times.

"He's over in the office taking care of business."

"Oooh that's right, Zeb is gone for the next week and with school cancelled I'm sure I'll be seeing both of you quite often?" Annie grinned.

The boy wasn't stupid, he could see that Annie liked his Papa a lot but he saw the way him and Ms. Hera looked at each other. He knew that things were about to change and he wasn't sure how he liked it.

"Not sure, Papa is going to be busy this week," he said with a shrug of his small shoulders.

"Oh well tell him that I ordered that part and it should be here in a few days," Annie said with a hint of deflation.

"Thanks Annie, but he did tell us to come in and get a few things and put it on his account," Ezra smiled broadly hoping to lift her spirits.

The woman nodded and led the two over to the candies. It wasn't long before the sound of giggling rose. Minutes later the sound was silenced by Kallus charging into the store.

"Young Jarrus!" He barked.

The boy jumped and spun around.

"I lost my job because of you and your father and I want to speak with the marshal! Only the marshal isn't here and who is in his place..."

"I am Kallus."

"Papa!" Ezra cried out in fear.

In his mind the mean teacher standing between them was going to hurt him and Sabine.

"Kallus you were fired because of your actions and Zeb left me in charge. If you want to turn this into a family matter then by all means, but not while I'm running the town. Leave now or I will be forced to arrest and hold you," Kanan said staring the man down.

"Mark my words Jarrus, no matter what you do, someone will come and they will end you," Kallus sneered shoving his way out of the store.

Kanan glared at his retreating back and went to comfort his son. Ezra watched everything and began to cry as the former teacher left. Sabine noticing this gave him a hug, whispering small words to calm him down. The man knelt down and gathered the boy into his arms.

"Shh..it's ok EJ, it's ok," he whispered giving Sabine a soft smile.

"Annie, did these kids get to make any purchases," he asked readjusting Ezra.

The woman nodded and held up a bag. Kanan took it with a smile and turned to Sabine.

"Come on, your Mama is waiting over at the office. Bye Annie!"

Kanan took the girl's hand and walked out of the store.

Hera was pacing in the office scared that someone was trying to cause trouble already. A citizen ran into the office saying that a man by the name of Kallus stormed into the general store, Kanan raced out. She was pulled from her musing when Kanan and the two children came in.

"Mama!" Sabine exclaimed excitedly. "You'll never guess, Marshall Jarrus just stared down that mean man and he backed down!"

Hera gave him a weird look while Kanan just blushed. Ezra whimpered causing his blush to turn to worry.

"Did he hurt you Son?" He asked quietly.

The boy shook his head. Kanan sighed and handed Sabine the bag.

"I'm just sorry that you got caught up in the town drama," he told her.

Sabine smiled before holding out her hand for Ezra. The child looked at her and then to his father.

"It's alright," he said putting the boy on his feet.

The two went over to another part of the room to deal out their treasure.

"You are something," Hera said watching them.

"It was nothing, I have been waiting for a chance to get back at Kallus for what he did to Ezra," Kanan replied.

Hera smiled and thought to herself.

'Maybe things will get better."
