wildflowers
i wove you a crown
with delicate yarrow blossoms
and peach butterfly weed
your favorite flower
in a field besides the lake
speckled with yellow cornflowers
watermelon popsicle dripping
on my hand
i gave you it
you smiled and said
i love you
and i loved you too
you held my hand
and i held yours too
we watched the sunset
fiery rays bursting
against the navy twilight
and thousands of stars
i framed us
and tucked it deep
in my heart and
cherished it.
but the flowers wilted
and you left
went past the rolling plains
and purple milkweed meadows
across the ragged mountains
with snow-capped peaks
and castles of clouds
you took a piece of me
and our picture
lay buried in my heart
gathering dust
lint bunnies leaping
in my attic
but today i remember
that perfect summer day
your warm breath
melting the sun
a kaleidoscope of
butterflies flitting around
us
i wonder what you are
an aspiring artist
traveling worlds we dreamt of
a nurse
living in the big city
with its flashing lights
i wonder if you still
love me
i wonder if you remember
the goldenrod sunset
the silver moon
curved like your ma's croissants
and the crown of
summer wildflowers
i hear a thump
at my door
my heart leaps
i open it
but it's not you
only a confused swallow
and i stow
our picture in my heart
to gather dust again
