The Underworld
You stared at the house before you. You looked at the piece of paper you had one more time to make sure you had the right address.
Mitch: I've never even heard of this place before. Endsville? Where has this place been my whole life?
Y/N: Only three train stops away, apparently.
You, Mitch, and Courage all stood in front of the strange houses.
Y/N: Hm. Well, I guess we should head in.
Courage whined but Mitch picked him up and carried him. The two of you reached the door and knocked.
You both waited before you felt the air grow cold. You looked around confused. Where was that coming from?
Suddenly, the door swung open. You and Mitch both took a step back when you saw who had answered.
???: Who goes there?
You and Mitch looked at each other, then back to him.
Y/N: Uh.....Grim?
Grim: Yes, that is me.
Mitch: Like, the Grim Reaper?
Grim: Yes, man. It is I, the Grim Reaper!
The three of you stared at him blankly for a second. You were all suddenly gone.
You huddled around each other as you called the number Brick gave you. It rang for a moment before someone answered.
Mandy: Hello?
Y/N: Hey, Mandy, uh, we're at your address and...
Mandy: I know. I'm right here.
You all looked back to the house to see Mandy standing next to Grim. She hung up and you all broke the huddle.
Mandy: Y/N, Mitch, Courage, this is Grim. Grim, these are the ones who will be helping us with our problem.
Grim: Oh! Perfect. More kids to get on my nerves.
Mitch: Wait, so, like, is he the actual Grim Reaper?
Mandy: Yes.
Mitch: Metal.
This guy was the Grim Reaper? The harvester of souls? The embodiment of death?
What the heck was he doing hanging out with Mandy?
Mandy: Are you bozos just going to stand there or are you coming in?
Power Up!
You all sat on the couch while Grim offered you all cookies. You kindly turned him down.
Mitch: So, what's the problem that needs fixing?
Mandy: It's Nergal Jr.
Y/N/Mitch: Nergal Jr.?
Mandy/Grim: Nergal Jr.
Y/N: Who is....Nergal Jr.?
Mandy, who was sitting across from you, just took a cookie from Grim's tray.
Mandy: Nergal Jr. is the first cousin of my.....friend. Unfortunately he isn't with us anymore.
Mitch: I'm, uh, sorry to hear that.
Mandy: Nergal Jr. is the half demon son of Nergal. A shape shifting demon that is very powerful. He's always been a bit lonely. That has caused him to act out on his more evil tendencies.
There was a lot of supernatural stuff going on here. Demons? Sea Witches? This was just odd.
Mandy: Lately he's been working on raising an army in the Underworld. We believe that he's planning on invading Earth.
You all sat up with wide eyes. You and Mitch then looked at each other as Courage hid in the couch cushion.
That was a big problem.
Y/N: Uh, so, where do we come in?
Grim: You have to challenge him and beat him.
Y/N: What?
Mandy: The only way you can beat him is with a formal challenge.
Mitch patted your shoulder.
Mitch: Good luck with that, buddy.
He grabbed Courage and started to leave, but you grabbed the back of his pants and pulled him back on the couch.
Mandy: Grim will take you there. I'll go as well. Once you beat Nergal Jr., we'll come back here.
You took a deep breath and slowly let it out.
Y/N: Okay. I'm ready when you are.
Mandy: I'm ready right now.
Mitch: Wait, what?
Grim suddenly pulled out his scythe and swung it down. A tear in reality formed and Mandy got up. She then walked right through it.
You and Mitch just looked at each other and shrugged. You then followed.
The test closed behind you and you suddenly found yourself standing in the Underworld.
Wait.
Ahem.
THE UNDERWORLD
That's better.
But everything looked darker than on the surface world. And not only that, but there was a lot of fire. Though, the fires were all green.
Creatures from your nightmares were walking around freely. Almost like how people walked around town.
Mitch: Woah.
Mandy: Here.
She tossed something at Mitch. He caught it and found that it was a black cloak.
Mandy: It's best if we all blend in for now. Nergal Jr's hold on the Underworld is strong. If we hope to reach him, we have to look the part.
Mitch pulled the cloak on and looked at you.
------------
Mitch: I didn't plan on playing dress up today.
Mandy: No one ever does.
The four of you walked through the Underworld in your new disguises.
Mitch wore a black cloak that dragged behind him as well as some white paint to make his skin look pale.
Courage had a skull of some kind of animal on his head and was walking on all fours.
Mandy wore face paint to make her face look like a skull and a red cape as well as a pair of horns.
You wore a wooden mask that covered your entire face with your hood up and chains hanging off your body.
You all looked like cheap versions of Underworld monsters, but it seemed to work pretty well.
Courage was practically shaking with every step, so you ended up putting him in your hood which left your hair visible. It wasn't like the creatures here were very smart to begin with.
Mitch: Am I the only one completely shaking in his boots?
Mandy: Just stay calm. You still have that sword I gave you.
Mitch lifted his cloak to show the handle of the sword.
Mandy: Good. Keep it close to you. If things go sideways, you'll need it to defend yourself.
Y/N: Yeah, well, let's try not to let things go sideways. Where is this Junior guy?
Mandy: Up there.
You all stopped and looked up at the massive tower in the center of the Underworld. It was made of black brick and had several large bowls of green fire.
You sighed and dropped your head.
Y/N: Do we have to walk up all those stairs?
Mandy: Yes.
Mitch: Aw, come on!
----------------
Y/N: Oh, man. It doesn't even look like we're getting any closer.
Mandy: Just keep walking.
----------------
Mitch: How many steps does this thing have?
Mandy: Just keep walking.
---------------
Y/N: Can't I just fly us up there?
Mandy: Just keep walking.
------------
It had taken you an hour, but you all finally made it to the top. You, Mitch, and Courage all collapsed when you finally reached the top.
Mandy, however, was unfazed.
Mandy: We're here.
Before you was a massive black castle. Green fire surrounded it to give it an eerie glow.
You all got back to your feet and looked around. You then heard a ding and looked over to see a creature using an elevator.
You all turned to Mandy with mad faces. She just shrugged.
You all walked over to the doors of the castle which were already opened. A line of monsters lead all the way down the tower from an unseen staircase that you didn't use.
Since you had no time to stand around and wait, you decided to just jump the line.
Y/N: Sorry, excuse me, out of the way, pardon me, move it, watch your feet, screw you.
Your group made your way to the front of the line where you found a foldable table with a red monster acting as a kind of receptionist.
Mandy: We need to talk to Nergal Jr.
Receptionist: Sorry, but his majesty is busy at the moment.
Mandy: We weren't asking.
The Receptionist stared at her unamused. He then went back to working on his list. Mandy rolled her eyes and simply walked around him.
You and Mitch stared at each other before you shrugged. You then followed Mandy.
Honestly, it seemed like she had this under control.
You all ended up inside of a throne room where you found a massive throne made of bones. On it was the one you were supposed to challenge.
Mandy: Nergal Jr. We're here to challenge you.
Nergal Jr.: Hm? Mandy?
You and Mitch stood there while Courage sat in your hood.
This guy....was just a kid? He looked like he was only a year younger than you. And not just that, but he looked like a dork.
A completely harmless dork.
Nergal Jr.: Oh, hey, Mandy!
He hopped off his throne and walked over to all of you. Mitch placed a hand on his sword while you stood at the ready incase things went south.
However, he didn't seem very hostile. He instead hugged Mandy, even though she didn't return the gesture.
Nergal Jr.: Aw, man am I happy to see you. How have you been? I haven't seen you since.....
Mandy shrugged him off and walked over to you. She then pushed you towards him.
Mandy: Enough chit chat. He's going to challenge you.
Nergal Jr. looked at you confused. But he smiled anyway. He then held out a hand.
Jr: Hey. I'm Nergal Jr. It's nice to meet you.
You just stood there confused. You then shook his hand as you stared at him blankly.
This guy was raising an army to take over Earth? He seemed like a stand up guy.
Jr: So, what game do you want to challenge me at? Is it chess? I'm pretty good at chess.
Mitch slowly let go of his sword and looked at you to see what you would do. You just shrugged. He seemed oddly familiar.
Wait, could it be.....
Jr: How about checkers.....
Y/N: How lonely are you?
Jr and Mandy both stared at you as you stood there.
This kid....is just like Princess!
Jr: What?
Y/N: It's just, I'm sorry, it's just that you kind of remind me of a friend of mine and I was wondering if you were raising an army because you were lonely.
Jr didn't say anything. He just held his board game with a blank face.
Jr: What? No. Why would I be lonely? I mean, look at me. I'm practically the lord of the Underworld.
Mandy groaned.
Mandy: That's bogus and you know it, Junior.
She marched over to Jr who just hugged his board game.
Mandy: You've been cooped up in here since Billy died. It's not healthy.
Jr: I'm fine! I don't need you to baby me.
You just took a step back and stood next to Mitch. You felt like you were missing very important right now.
Mitch: I don't think we're needed here.
Y/N: Yeah, me neither. Should we just....go?
Mitch and Courage both nodded.
So, you just, left.
It was for the best.
-------------
You finally made it home with Mitch and Courage sometime later. It was a long and awkward train ride home.
People kept staring at you because of your costumes.
But you made it.
Jr: Hey, guys.
The three of you stood in the doorway and looked in only to find Jr, Mandy, and Grim sitting at the table with Liz. She was laughing at something Grim had said.
Liz: Oh, Mr. Reaper, you are just so funny.
Grim: If you think that's good, you should see my stand up.
Y/N: What the fu....
Mandy: Congratulations, Y/N. You stopped an invasion.
Mitch: How?
Liz: Well, from what I heard, you boys decided to befriend someone who was still dealing with the death of his beloved cousin. I'm so glad that grandma and grandpa raised you to be such a kind person.
Wait. What? When did that happen? When did you agree to this?!
Mandy: Thank you for taking care of him.
Jr: We'll get along famously.
You just stood there. Mitch just sighed and decided to go and take a nap on your couch.
This was your life now.
Better get used to it.
