chapter 16 - Lucky
At the Java Brew, everyone was sitting together.
"Where has he been for the last 16 years?" Diana asked.
"I don't know," Cassie told us. "He just said it would be safe for me and my mom if people thought he was dead."
"That shounds like the excuse of a man who's hiding a whole other family somewhere," Faye told them.
"Faye," Adam chastised.
"Oh, God," Faye said. "Imagine if there was another Cassie running around." She pointed at Jake and Adam. "Then you could each have one."
I tilted my head, sighing, looking down.
Jake looked at me.
"If Blackwell's such a huge force of dark magic, why didn't he do anything to stop the witch hunters?" Melissa asked.
"His power was stripped like all our parents'," Cassie answered.
"None of us could have stopped Eben," Jake told us. "He magically recovered after being impaled by a tree."
"Seeing as you're the one who's still making deals with the witch hunters, tell us, how did Eben get that power?" Adam asked.
"I don't know," Jake told him. "I would have asked, but he was too busy trying to kill me."
I pointed at both of them. "Will you two just arm wrestle or something?"
"Cassie, I think you're lucky," Diana told her.
"How's that?" Cassie asked.
"Because we've all wished we could have back the parent we lost," Diana answered.
"Yeah, as long as that parent isn't the devil on his days off," I told them. Everyone gave me a serious look. "I'm leaving."
"Me, too, because I've got to scrounge together a date for casino night anyway," Faye told us. "I don't want to pull a Tricia."
"Nice, Faye," I told her sarcastically.
Faye stood, walking away.
"So, who's helping me set up for tonight?" Diana asked. I stood, starting to walk away. Melissa held up her hand. Diana smiled, standing. "I will see you later."
Melissa and Diana walked away.
I turned back to my chair to grab my leather jacket.
Jake looked at Cassie. "With or without power, your father can help us. Eben will be back. And John Blackwell knows more about the hunters than any of us."
I pulled on my leather jacket, walking toward the door.
Jake stood, walking away from Adam and Cassie.
Diana, Faye, Melissa and I were sitting in the Brew, eating and drinking around a table.
"After Callum's party, he could barely keep his hands off of me, and now I'm getting blown off?" Faye asked. "It doesn't make sense."
"Are you losing your touch?" I asked tauntingly.
"Hardly," Faye told me.
Melissa looked at Diana. "Meanwhile, this one's turning away hotties like she's allergic to them."
"We're still on this?" Diana asked. "He's leaving tonight."
Melissa put her coffee cup on the table. "Whatever." She stood. "And he wouldn't be leaving if you'd even flashed him a smile." Diana smiled sarcastically. Melissa looked at Faye. "And, you, since when does Faye Chamberlain take no for an answer?" She looked at me. "And, last but not least, you, Patricia Hartley, what is wrong with you and pushing Jake away when just a week ago, you were the happiest you've been in the longest time?"
Melissa walked away, leaving.
I tilted my head, looking from the door to Diana to Faye. "When did she get so insightfull? Wasn't it just last week we saved her from a voodoo drug pusher?"
Diana pointed at me. "Actually, she saved herself."
I pointed at Diana. "Hmm. But it's the thought that counts."
I took a drink from my coffee.
Faye tilted her head in acknowledgement.
Diana smiled.
I shrugged one shoulder.
At the casino night thing, I saw Faye walking moodily through the crowd.
I walked toward her.
"This sucks," Faye told me. "I'm gonna go."
"I know you won't believe me when I say this, but I am sorry," I told her. "Lee's an idiot. If he could see you in that dress . . ."
"Well, he did, so . . ." Faye trailed off.
"Then he's an even bigger idiot than I thought he was two seconds ago, and that was pretty big," I told her. "I told you he was a creep that was using you."
"Yeah, and now that you've had your moment to say, 'I told you so,' can we please just forget it?" Faye asked.
I looked behind her. "No."
"Why?" Faye asked.
"Because maybe he's a creep that deserves another chance," I answered. Faye looked over her shoulder to look behind her, following my gaze to see Lee staring back toward us. She looked at me. I smirked, tilting my head, backing away. "I'm just saying."
I turned around, walking away, leaving them alone.
Faye and I stood together at a table, playing Black Jack, using magic to win. Lee stood next to Faye.
The dealer laid down another card. "Black jack."
I smiled. "Yes!"
"Seven in a row?" the dealer asked. "That's impossible."
"Keep your visor on," I told him. "Some of us are just born winners."
"Okay, guys, I think that's enough good luck for one night," Lee told us.
I shrugged. "I'm gonna go get a drink."
I smiled, walking away.
Later on, I was standing alone, looking around for something to do. I looked toward another game, noticing Jake standing next to the wall, looking toward me.
I didn't show him a reaction, turning around, walking away.
If he really was into Cassie, I wasn't gonna be dragged into a relationship that would never work.
