chapter 15 - Return

At Java Brew, Melissa, Faye and I sat together, looking toward Cassie as she worked, because she was the new barista. Adam was helping her because she was a total failure the first day.

Adam walked past him on the way out of the door.

"The queen bee serving me a latte on bent knees," Faye said. "Life is good." She looked toward Cassie. "Waitress? Refill here."

"Oh, come on, Faye," I told her. "Get over it."

"Get over what?" Faye asked.

"Jake's thing for Cassie," I answered. "I've gotten over it, so should you."

"You're not the tiniest bit jealous?" Melissa asked.

"She can have him," I told them. "I don't care."

"Look, Tricia, if you're so over Jake, why don't you just move on?" Melissa asked.

"If I get too close to people, they die," I told them nonchalantly, like it didn't even matter.

Melissa sighed, looking over to Faye. "Okay, what about you? Lee is into you."

"Lee?" Faye repeated. "Date below my station? No. Total power mismatch."

I looked toward the door.

Callum stood there, looking toward us.

"Speaking of slumming . . ." I trailed off, looking toward Callum

Callum stood next to us, looking at Melissa. "Hey, there."

"Callum," Melissa said.

"I'm throwing a party at my place later," Callum told us. "You ladies interested in making it even more awesome?"

I shook my head. "No, thanks. We're just sticking to a coffee buzz these days."

Melissa looked from Faye to me. "It might be fun." She looked at Callum. "We'll think about it."

"Great," Callum told us. "I'll text you my address."

Callum walked away.

Melissa smiled, looking from Faye's skeptical look to mine. "What? He's not what you guys think. He's actually an okay guy."

"Yeah?" Faye asked. "I bet you could get a two-for-one deal in rehab."

Melissa tilted her head forward in annoyance, looking away.

Melissa had actually gone to the party at Callum's without us.

And we thought that she could have been using Devil's Spirit again.

Diana, Faye and I went to Lee because we didn't know where Callum lived, but Lee did.

In the shop, we looked  around all of the voodoo stuff.

A door opened behind us. We turned to look at Lee.

"Ladies," Lee said. He closed the door behind him. "What a pleasant surprise." He walked further into the room, looking at Diana. "What, no kiss this time?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Diana told him.

"Well, I could refresh you memory," Lee told her.

"Put it away, Lee," Faye told him. "This isn't a booty call. We're looking for Callum's address."

"Melissa's at his party, and we're worried about her," Diana told him.

"You let her go to Callum's party by herself?" Lee asked.

I tilted my head. "Yes, Mommy. Now just give us the address, and we'll be on our way."

Lee looked between us, walking away toward his coat.

"What are you doing?" Diana asked.

"I'm coming with you," Lee answered.

"You don't think we can handle ourselves?" I asked.

"I get it," Lee told us. "You guys are witches. But voodoo's a whole different world. There's a right and left hand path. Callum practices left--evil, malicious juju. Some of the people that go to his parties don't come back the same. So you sure you still want to go alone?"

Faye tilted her head. "Aw, he cares."

"Callum uses people," Lee told us. "He'll take whatever you've got. And what you guys have, he'll take any way he can. Now, come on. Let's go."

Lee led the way out.

Faye, Diana and I followed.

At the party, a guy in luminescent paint opened the door. Lee led the way inside, turning to face Faye, Diana and me as we followed. "All right. Let's just split up, find your friend, and get out of here. Do not leave this room. Got it?"

I gave him a mock salute. "Yes, sir."

Lee walked away.

Diana looked at Faye. "He's very protective of you. It's so sweet."

"Please," Faye told us.

I rolled my eyes, smiling, walking away to find Melissa.

Diana turned around and walked into another direction.

So did Faye.

We had to find Melissa.

I saw Melissa walk down some stairs, walking toward her. "I've been looking for you. Where's Callum?"

"That jerk locked me in a room," Melissa told me. "He knows I'm a witch. Let's go." She looked behind me. "Faye!"

Faye walked toward us.

I looked at Melissa. "We have to find Diana and Lee."

"Lee is the same," Melissa told us. She looked at Faye. "He's using you."

Faye shook her head. "No. Lee came here to help us."

"Callum has a totem just like the one Lee gave you," Melissa told her. "He showed me how it works. It doesn't give energy. It takes it."

"Are you sure?" I asked.

Melissa nodded. "I felt it."

Faye tilted her head, obviously hurt.

Diana walked up to us. "Adam called. Cassie's in trouble."

"Of course she is," I said.

Melissa, Diana, Faye and I walked toward the door.

Lee stepped in our way. "You found Melissa."

"And now we're leaving without you," I told him, pushing past.

Melissa and Diana followed.

Faye tried to follow.

Lee grabbed her arm to stop her. "What's wrong?"

Faye turned toward him. "Melissa told me about your totem scam. Screw you."

"Where'd she hear that?" Lee asked. "Callum? The totem doesn't mean anything. It's just an object. It's the spell that matters."

"I can't believe I trusted you," Faye told him, turning around, following us.

On the way there, Diana filled us in.

John Blackwell was back, apparently alive.

Witch hunters had taken Cassie.

Jake was using John, trying to make a switch, John for Cassie.

But when we saw a witch hunter pull Jake into the middle of the woods, we knew that the plans had changed.

The witch hunter pushed Jake to his knees, walking around him, turning to face him, standing in front of him.

"What are you doing?" Jake demanded.

"Your usefulness has come to an end," the witch hunter told him.

"I brought you Blackwell," Jake told him. "We had a deal!"

The witch hunter held a knife toward him. "Your father said nearly the same thing just before I slit his throat."

The witch hunter weilded the knife back, trying to slit his throat.

Diana, Melissa, Faye, Adam and I used the Circle's magic to make him fly back into a tree, and tree branch impaling him through his back to his stomach.

We ran toward Jake, looking at the witch hunter.

"Oh, my God," Melissa said.

I stood in front of Jake, looking at the witch hunter, turning to face Jake.

"Did you do that?" Jake asked.

"We all did," I answered. I tilted my head. "You're welcome." I knelt in front of him, trying to unlock the iron handcuffs around his wrists, which blocked him from doing any magic. I couldn't get them to unlock. I looked up to Melissa, Diana, Adam and Faye. "Can I get a little help here?"

"Lock unlock," we all said together.

The handcuffs fell open.

Jake gasped, breathing heavily in pain.

I took the handcuffs away from his bleeding wrists, looking up. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," Jake answered. "Thanks." He looked behind me. "What the hell?" I turned around. The witch hunter that we had 'killed' was gone. "That's impossible. He had a branch through his gut. How'd he get up and run away?"

"I don't know, but right now, we need to find Cassie," Adam told us, walking away.

Jake and I stood, following him. Melissa, Diana and Faye followed us.

In the field ahead we saw Blackwell surrounded by a circle of fire, kneeling to the ground in pain.

Cassie held a branch toward him.

"Cassie, fight the spell," John told her.

"I'm trying," Cassie told him. "I can't!"

"Cassie!" Adam yelled, running forward.

The rest of us followed.

"I've been spelled," Cassie told us. "I can't stop!"

"We have to break the connection between Cassie and the spell," Diana told us.

"Follow my lead," Adam told us. "By our power, restore her will."

Jake, Diana, Adam, Faye, Melissa and I repeated together. "By our power, restore her will."

The fire burned higher. Blackwell screamed in pain.

"The spell's not working," Adam told us. "We need the whole Circle. Cassie, you have to help. Focus on the words as hard as you can."

"I can't!" Cassie told him.

"Forget what your body is doing," Faye told her.

"Just concentrate on the spell," Melissa told her.

"By our power . . ." Adam trailed off.

Everyone, including Cassie, joined in. "Restore her will. By our power, restore her will. By our power, restore her will. By our power, restore her will."

Cassie let the branch go, letting it fall to the ground, everyone staring in surprise.

The fire surrounding Blackwell disappeared, leaving nothing but darkness.

Cassie breathed heavily, looking at Adam in relief. She ran toward her father, helping him stand, letting him go, taking a step back. Cassie and Blackwell looked around all of us.

Everyone besides Blackwell and Cassie were at the witch house now.

The witch hunter that had spelled Cassie, the one that we had tried to kill, his name was Eben.

"So, isn't Cassie's father supposed to be really, really evil?" I asked, walking closer to them.

"We don't know that for sure," Melissa told us.

"He didn't hurt Cassie, even when she was coming after him," Diana agreed.

"I just hope we did the right thing, saving him," Adam admitted. "'Cause when my dad looked at Blackwell tonight, I've never seen him so scared."

Well, that was just the cherry on top of a fantastic day.
