Two

I was flying—more like hovering above the ground a few inches, but I still floated there—then, I wasn't.

"Awww, fuck," I curse, crashing to the ground with enough force it cracks the foundation. The nurse rushes in and aids me to my feet.

"What the hell were you doing in here?" He barks. Did he miss the part where I was FLOATING?...things floating?

"Let's get you to your bed." He says, helping me out of the bathroom.

I guess he did.

I lay back in bed, getting comfy in the sheets. A tray sits on my bedside table: a Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans. It's not the most appetizing-sounding food, but my stomach rumbles, and I realize it will do for now. Maybe later, Meghan can pick me up some Chipotle or something.

The real focus was why I was floating. Why did that handle crush so quickly in my palm? My mind shifts.

Son of a— "Nick, you want something else? Like maybe The Habit?" Meghan asks, her face showing disgust for the food before me—I gulp. Boy, does she know me well?

"Uh, yeah, sure," I glance at Nurse Green Eyes again. He nods in response and leaves the room.

"Is In-n-out on the table? I'll take a number one—animal-style fries and a chocolate shake, babe." A smirk bubbles across my lips. "Oh, and don't forget one of those little hats—"

"I won't, babe," She says, grabbing her keys as she stands up, leans in, and pecks me on the lips. "I'll be right back, Your Highness."

"Sure," I smile at her, watching her roll her eyes. My stomach roars with happiness.

"Thank you."

She leaves, and I'm stuck in bed, trying to figure out what happened in the bathroom and how I triggered it again.

Was I okay? Was I going insane?

Developing superpowers was not on my bingo card. Not by a long shot—specifically, the powers to fly or crush a metal object with my pinky finger. However, neither was an ICU visit, yet I was trying to figure this out before a nurse walked in and found me climbing the ceiling like Spiderman.

"God, fuck!" I curse as Nurse Green Eyes stops in the doorway.

"What?" he asks, smacking on a piece of string cheese.

"I wish I could go home," I say.

"Your vitals are looking better, so maybe soon," He admits, a straight row of teeth beaming back at me.

"Yeah, but I look like a roasted marshmallow slathered in tomato sauce," I tell him. He doesn't argue with me. Instead, he nods silently.

"That should go away on its own."

"I hope so," I reply. He walks off, and my eyes return to my phone. I pluck it from the tray and turn it on, listening to the drowning dings push through.

Ding...Ding....Ding........Ding...Ding.

"Geez," I mutter, my eyes on a mug shot of the Ex-president—his face covered with a smug expression, as he poses for the camera.

"Thank god, that orange lunatic is going to prison," I mutter out loud.

My heart pounds in my chest, thump, thump...and in a split second, my body leaves the bed. I glance around, hoping nobody could see me floating, as I reach out to grab for anything surrounding me. I find myself floating higher.

"Umm..." Meghan's high-pitched screech pierces my ears from the doorway. She drops the food and stares at me wide-eyed. Well... there's no way out of this now. "Nick, you're floating."

There goes my shake, all over the floor. I wanted it, too.

"That I am," I say with puckered lips. "Can you maybe help me down?" She stands there staring for a few moments more before she rushes to my side and yanks me down to the bed, pinning me there until my body no longer fights hers.

I flash a smile at the woman standing in front of me. A deafening hush ensues, so intense that even the sound of a pin dropping would seem audible. Suddenly, my monitor starts blaring once again, breaking the silence.

"I brought food," she sniffs, her breaths coming in ragged gasps.

"I can see that," I remark, briefly darting to the spilled chocolate shake on the floor.

"You, sir, were floating," she states, visibly reeling from the shock.

"I'm aware," I reply. "May I start eating?"

"Of course," she exhales, picking up my bag from the ground and setting it down on the table. "Bon Appetit."

I dig into the bag, pull out the sailor's cap, and adjust it on my head. Then, I pull out my burger and fries just as Green Eyes walks in.

"You hungry?" He asks.

"Yeah," I answer him, taking a whopping bite of my double-double.

"Do you want a soda?" He asks. "We have sprite from the kitchen."

"Sure," I nod. I glance at Meghan, who relaxes in the corner again, hoodie flung over her head and sunglasses on, but she observes casually.

"I'll go work on that," He says. "In the meantime, the doctor is working on your discharge paperwork. Everything came back normal."

"Sounds good!" I smack my lips together. "I can go home." My heart pounds in my chest. Thump—thump.

"Yep, let's get you home," He says, patting my foot, before he leaves the room.
