Five
"Morning," Evan waves lazily in the kitchen, hovering over a bowl of Reese's puffs and milk on the kitchen table.
"Morning," I wave back, half asleep, as I wander to the refrigerator for milk for my cereal bowl.
"Let's promise never to do what we did yesterday," Harry puts in, his face halfway digging into his bowl of cereal.
"Agreed!" Meghan, Evan, and I say in unison. Meghan sits quietly in the corner, smacking on scrambled eggs and turkey bacon she whipped up from the black hole in our fridge, but it sounds good right about now.
My stomach rumbles, and I feel like passing on the bowl of cereal for a plate full of eggs. Instead, I take the bowl of cereal like a champ—rice crispy slopped in sugary goodness and milk.
"What freak accident were we exposed to gave us superpowers," Harry asks.
"Dunno. Can't remember," I mutter, dumping a puddle of milk and cereal past my lips.
"Hey," Evan taps his spoon against his bowl. "Why wasn't Meghan affected?"
"Dunno," I mutter through a spoonful of cereal. "Our powers must be something, though," I raise my brows in her direction, wiggling them until she giggles at me.
"Are you trying to turn me on? Because it's working," She smiles and winks in my direction before sucking on a piece of turkey bacon, licking the salt off the edges.
I watch her, fantasizing about doing dirty things to her before my brother walks in, slapping himself onto a seat in the corner.
"Uh, nope," I take another bite. "Just trying to get your attention, babe."
"Have you, uh," He clears his throat. "...told Torre about your powers yet?" Oliver asks.
"I'm sure she knows. It's one of the most talked about things on TikTok right now," I say, my eyes flicking to my phone on the table next to my bowl. After the news about my superpowers surfaced, I finally shut off the stupid notifications, and I no longer had to listen to the annoying little dings I got that got more aggressive with every second that passed.
"I would still tell her once she wakes up," He says.
I nearly spit out my cereal. "She's here?"
"Yeah, she slept over last night," He shrugs, clearly not in the mood for anything foolishly dumb I might have to say about her.
"Did you guys, uh—" I scratch the back of my neck, forgetting about the spoon in my hand.
"Yep," He smacks his lips, and reaches into the center of the table, grabbing a ripe banana. "It's not like you and Meghan didn't get it on last night... I mean, I would fuck myself too if I had powers like yours. You're practically a god."
Evan snorts in the background. "Mmm, not Gods. Just some weirdos with superpowers."
"Ain't that the truth," Meghan adds, smacking hands with my brother.
"So, what are we doing today? Testing our powers?" Harry asks, sucking down a spoonful of frosted milk.
"Mmkay," I mutter through a wash down of milk and the rest of my bowl. Sadly, I have to admit, I am not looking forward to any testing of these bad boys without some kind of supervision from someone who knows how to use them, but the more I hear on the news about lunatics robbing and looting stores because of this, the more I want to do something to stop them. I had to begin somewhere.
"Why don't we start with something easy that won't destroy the city..." I add.
"Where is the fun in that?" Evan jabs, finishing his bowl in one slurp.
"It's called being responsible. You should try it sometime," Meghan jabs back before collecting our dishes and putting all of them, including hers in the sink.
Torre emerges from outside the dining room, pecking Oliver on the lips before joining him at the table. "Good morning, everyone," She says with a grin.
"Good morning, Torre," Evan and I say together just as she takes out her phone. "How was everyone's night?" She continues.
"Quite interesting actually," Harry puts in with puckered lips and raised eyebrows as he stares her down like she's a snack.
"I heard something about testing abilities today. Are you boys doing something like that? Do you need someone to vlog?" She asks, bright and bushy-tailed as her eyes wander my way.
"Uh..." I pause deep in thought. She most definitely knows about our powers. My eyes flick to Oliver who shrugs at me. "Yeah, isn't that what we do as YouTubers? Take exciting videos of our lives for everyone to see?"
Oliver snorts. "This is exciting?" He pauses dramatically with an eyebrow raised. "More like terrifying. Now you have powers and a target on your back from a guy who wants to KILL YOU, might I remind you."
"He won't even make an indent in my skin let alone a scratch," Harry says, rolling his eyes.
"Well, I'm very scared," I admit.
"You're always a chicken," Evan laughs, eyeing the last piece of turkey bacon on the table. "Are you going to eat that?"
Meghan responds with a smile. "Please, by all means...Take it."
"I am not a chicken," I argue, but in his defense, he was absolutely correct. I was literally the shaggy of this gang of misfits.
"Weren't you guy who voted we don't go after that dumbass yesterday?" Harry puts in.
I groan. "Please don't remind me," I rub my temples trying to ignore yesterday's finest moments replaying in my head.
"So, are we testing our powers or not?" Harry asks.
"I want to watch," Oliver says.
"I want to video it," Torre adds, winking at me before leaning in to peck Oliver on the lips again.
"Okay, we do it just this once," I set my ground rules.
Evan huffs. "Famous last words. Let's hit the road. I don't want a load of fans messing up my bench press," He smirks at Meghan, but Meghan rolls her eyes.
All six of us peel from our seats and head upstairs to get ready, hardly saying another word to one another in the process.
