"this is ridiculous," you mumble, eyeing yourself in the mirror, eyes narrowing as you zero in at the slightest things. running your fingers down your hair for the millionth time, you squint at yourself, making a frustrated noise when you mess your hair up even more. frantically patting down the once-tinier messy spot, you flinch when a knock is heard at your door. "oh god, oh god."
you take another look at yourself, decide lip gloss is too much, and wipe it off with a tissue before quickly making your way to the door, smoothing down your outfit and trying not to seem as enthusiastic about this date as you really are. inhaling excitedly, you let the smile tugging at your lips the entire morning settle on you as you tug your door open, feeling even more enamored when you catch sight of bucky on the other side.
his eyes are shinier, bluer in a hypnotizing way, and his hair is neatly done, highlighting his sharp cheekbones. he looks gorgeous in jeans and a blue shirt, something, unknown to you, that he took his time deciding on; it's fancier than the ones he usually wears—too fancy? it's just a coffee date. is it? what does a date mean now? bucky struggled too much to pick out his clothes this morning—yet, what really blows you away is the smile he gives you, a breathless "you look beautiful" in a soft voice.
"you do too," you reply, because he does. his cheeks pink at the compliment, eyes dropping to the floor for a second. you realize he's still outside and awkwardly step out of the way, hitting your arm on a frame hanging on your hallway wall. "ow, please come in."
"thank you," bucky says back, watching as you rub a shoulder and straighten the picture before closing the door.
"um, so the coffee shop is a couple of blocks away, but we can hang out here for a bit if you want," you offer, playing with your fingers and trying to relax around the ridiculously handsome man standing in your apartment.
"i don't mind," bucky assures, pulling something out from behind his back, "i brought you flowers. i hope it's not too cheesy."
you coo, marveling at the beauty of the flowers he holds out for you, the nerves that swim in his eyes. "this is so lovely, i can't even remember the last time there were flowers in this apartment. thank you bucky, i love them."
you take them from him with care, nuzzling your nose between the bundles of petals and inhaling the sweet smell. "let me put these in a vase," you tell him, heading to your kitchen. "sit down if you want. you bought me flowers, if you wanted, you could steal the milk right out of my fridge."
bucky grins at you, taking the bar seat across from the opening that lets him look at you in the kitchen, "i think i'll sit, thank you."
you gently take the flowers from the bouquet, cutting off an inch from each stem before placing them into a vase filled with water, "d'you want some water?" you offer. hearing his soft no thanks, you nod.
"uh, so, did you finish moving in completely yet, or do you still have boxes to unpack?" bucky asks.
"technically, i still have a couple of boxes, but they're still packed mostly because i lost the motivation to unpack a few days ago," you laugh.
bucky nods, "i've lived here for a while and there are two boxes still in my room, i get it. i could come help you out if you ever need it, though."
"i appreciate it," you admire a sunflower as you stand it up, "if you ever need help with those two boxes, i'm definitely here."
"be careful, doll, i'll be taking you up on that offer," he teases, making you laugh.
"i'm counting on it."
a silent minute of bucky observing you treat the flowers with care passes by, the quiet surprisingly comfortable for two people on their first date.
"do you mind if i get the password for the internet thing? i have to check something from a friend and i don't have connection for some reason." bucky looks nervous at the prospect of asking, as if the want to know your password was something you'd kick him out of your apartment for. you beam reassuringly at him, nodding as you continue in the kitchen.
"it's no problem! the password is actually hung up in the living room next to the bookshelf," you laugh, "it's actually a funny story, my friends kept—" you freeze, remembering why it was a funny story.
"oh my god," you whisper, dropping the items in your hand to try and intercept bucky on his way to what would surely be the end to the beginning of what seemed like a great date.
"why's it funny? which bookshelf?"
"it's actually not that funny, i misspelled the password and so that's why i should just probably type it in—" you tell him, wishing you hadn't given in to your friends' teasing at the fact that your wi-fi password was your cute neighbor's name. you had gotten tired of blushing each time you said it, so you just hung it up. a mistake, clearly.
you bump into bucky's frame, too busy panicking to really appreciate the heaviness of his hands when they distractedly land on your waist to steady you. his attention is on the piece of paper, andyou bring your hands up to your face.
"is that..." bucky starts, and you can't really tell what he's feeling based on his voice, "is that my name?"
"no," you lie pathetically, "look, a bird," you point out the window.
"no, i think that's my name... and a few of my dog tag's numbers, wow, that's actually impressive you remembered."
"remembered what? that's not your name," you chuckle nervously, "kiss me."
"that's—what?"
you swallow, "i'm so sorry, i just—you weren't looking at the birds—"
bucky, to your surprise, does not look horrified. instead, he begins to laugh, a beautiful sound that creates crinkles near his eyes, an ease in the rumble of his chest that puts you at ease. "okay," he says after a while, and you cock your head at him, about to ask what he means when he suddenly leans toward you to pull you into the kiss you'd asked for.
it's short and sweet, but you melt against his lips, hands lazily looping around his neck to pull him closer. you blink dazedly at him when he pulls away, squinting confusedly when he begins to chuckle lightly again.
"you know something?" he asks, "my password is your name, too," he confesses.
"it is?" you blurt, "are you making fun of me?"
"no! no, i'll take you to my apartment right now and show you!" bucky promises, cringing at how it ended up sounding.
"next date," you promise. "but it'll have to be soon."
"so in case i'm lying, i don't have time to change it?"
"maybe that." you nod, "or maybe i just really like you and am tricking you into a second date."
"'never felt so good to be tricked, then," bucky winks, kissing you again.
