Chapter 130
That night, Jenna found it impossible to sleep. So she went back to the common room, sitting on her usual armchair, and gazing onward.
James had sneaked out of the castle that same night to go see Lily. They knew that it was for the best if he did it alone, because it would've been too suspicious if seven Gryffindors disappeared in one night.
It was near dusk as Jenna was still wide awake in the common room that the portrait of the Fat Lady swung open and James stepped inside, looking more worn out and exhausted than ever.
Jenna immediately got to her feet at his sight. "How was she holding up?" she asked in a quiet voice as James approached her.
"She wouldn't even talk," he said, sighing as he dropped himself down on the couch, and so Jenna took the seat beside him.
James then buried his face miserably for long second before he finally dropped his hands and turned to face Jenna again.
"I wish I could somehow help her," he whispered. "But when something like this happens... there's nothing anyone can do to make it better."
"You did your part for being there for her," Jenna tried to reason. "All you could do to help was to at least be a shoulder to cry on."
"Yeah, but it didn't seem to be enough. It was like torture, watching her like that," he said, shaking his head. "But that's the thing. She wasn't even crying. She seemed too in shock to even speak. Whenever I think about her I just —"
James grimaced, pinching the bridge of his nose as he closed his eyes in agony. Jenna said nothing, feeling the sorrow fill her up.
"Do you know what I kept thinking while I was there?" James asked, looking up again.
"What?"
"That what if it was our parents?" he asked and at those words, Jenna's heart sank painfully. "What if they become the Death Eaters' next victim?"
He expected Jenna to push that thought away. To tell him that he was being unreasonable and to comfort him. But she only nodded.
"I've been thinking about the same thing for some while too," Jenna muttered, gazing into the fireplace as its flames crackled into the deadly silence of the room.
"We'll make it through this, won't we?" James asked her hopefully, even though he didn't seem too sure himself.
Jenna didn't answer. All she could do was to move forward and bring her brother into a hug. James decided to say nothing either as he held her tight in the silence which spoke a hundred unsaid words.

After that night, James left the castle after curfew frequently to visit Lily. After being over the shock, she had finally gotten to the stage that she cried her eyes out day and night, showing no sign of getting better as the weeks passed by.
James and Jenna's birthday soon arrived. But for the first time in eighteen years, the twins weren't excited about it in the slightest.
That day when Dumbledore had called James to his office to ask how Lily was doing, the boy came back with a news for the group.
They all gathered in the boys' dormitory once more and after placing all the protective enchantments to keep away eavesdroppers, James finally said,
"Dumbledore wants us to learn how to perform a Patronus charm?"
"Patronus charm?" Sirius repeated, raising an eyebrow at him. "To fight off Dementors? Why would we need that?"
"No, not for Dementors." James shook his head. "Dumbledore said it is a mean of communication."
"Communication? I didn't know Patronuses could do that," said Jenna amusingly.
"Me neither," James said earnestly, "but if Dumbledore thinks it's necessary for the Order, then we should probably do as he says."
"But where can we practice? Wouldn't it look suspicious?" Alice mused.
"Well, then we better think of a place quickly," said James. "Somewhere no one knows about."
"Ooh, how about the Shrieking Shack!?" Peter suggested excitedly, causing Remus to shot him a warning glare. "I-I mean... that was a bad idea... c-cause it's hunted and we don't know how to get in, of course..."
"How about the secret passageway behind the mirror on the fourth floor?" Sirius suggested. "It's roomy enough for all of us, I think."
So after agreeing with that place, all seven Gryffindors met up on the fourth floor that night after dinner with their wands ready in their grasps.
"Say we manage to produce a Patronus," Jenna started, "how exactly are we supposed to be communicating with them?"
"Dunno." said James, ruffling up his hair in confusion. "Let's first focus on actually doing it, shall we? We'll get to that later." He then turned to face Remus, saying, "Have you brought the book, Moony?"
"Yeah, just got it from the library," said Remus, taking the book out of his bag and handing it to James after bringing up the page relating to performing the spell.
"Well... doesn't seem too hard..." said James after reading through the page, but Marlene gave him a look, probably thinking otherwise. "The key is to focus on a happy memory... so everyone think of one, will you?"
A silence fell among them as they started searching their minds for a good memory. The first one Jenna thought of was the day she received her Hogwarts letter at eleven.
"Okay, let's do this..." said James, golding up his wand. "Expecto Patronum!"
Everyone watched with excitement as silvery lights shot out of the end of his wand, but as soon as it happened, the lights disappeared.
"All right... maybe it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be..."
"You don't say," said Marlene bitterly.
"Well, you guys try it! Go on," said James rather disappointedly and so the others raised their wands and casted the spell, but nothing exciting happened this time either.
They tried it a few more times, but only managed to make the silvery lights. Although in the case of Peter, he didn't even get there.
"Maybe it will help if we thought of other memories," said Alice and the others nodded, getting back to work.
It felt like several hours had passed when suddenly James let out a gasp when his silvery lights started to form an animal.
"Oh, God... it's a stag!" Marlene shrieked excitedly.
"Why am I not surprised," said Sirius with a grin.
Throughout the next hour, Alice managed to perform hers which took the form of a wild rabbit and Sirius's turned out to be a dog.
Jenna had tried different memories until then, but nothing seemed to work good enough.
So she finally thought of that same Christmas; she was sitting around the fireplace along with her parents and James. She was on the couch in Sirius's arms, drinking hot coco as they watched it snow outside their window, while the radio played a beautiful tune.
Nothing in particular had happened, but she had felt at peace. So with that thought, she raised her wand and said loudly, "Expecto Patronum!"
The next moment, she let out a gasp when the silvery lights that shot out from her wand came together to form a beautiful and elegant cat.
