When the Hogwarts Express stopped in the Hogsmeade station, all eight Gryffindors got out of the train together, knowing that it was the last time they were going to hear the familiar voice of Hagrid, shouting above the crowd, "Firs' years! Firs' years this way!"
"Good luck, Marvin," Alice smiled at the little boy warmly and so he blushed, leaving their side to join the other first years.
"I can't believe this is our last year here," Lily said with a sad tone as they were getting into the carriages. "It passed so quickly..."
"Last year, and I still don't know what I'm supposed to do with my life after I leave here," said Marlene grimly.
"I'm sure you'll figure it out when the time's right, Mar," said Alice with a hopeful glimmer in her eyes.
"Yeah," Jenna nodded, holding back a grin, "and even if it comes to the worse, you can always come back to Hogwarts and help Filch around."
"Haha," Marlene said blankly, glaring at Jenna who smirked.
When they walked into the Great Hall, an overwhelming feeling filled their hearts. But their moods became even gloomier when they looked around and realized that there were even less students there than last year.
Parents had refused to let their children attend Hogwarts, considering how things were getting worse and worse everyday in the Wizarding world.
The sorting ceremony soon started and the crowd of nervous looking first years walked into the Great Hall, led by Professor McGonagall, with Marvin among them, looking more worried than anyone else there.
"Why does Marvin look so pale?" Lily asked apprehensively, turning to face Marlene.
"That's understandable..." Marlene mumble with a hint of a smirk playing on her lips.
"What do you mean?" Lily frowned at her.
Marlene's grin widened. "I may or may not have told him that the sorting is going to hurt."
"Marlene!" Lily scolded her, shaking her head in disappointment.
They all watched eagerly, until McGonagall finally called out his name, "McKinnon, Marvin."
The little blond boy gulped nervously, taking slow steps toward the stool and sitting down hesitantly, waiting for McGonagall to put the Sorting Hat on him.
They all watched him warily in silence, until the Hat finally shouted out, "HUFFLEPUFF!"
They all cheered him up as Marvin stood off the stool, smiling at Marlene and her friends before joining the rest of the Hufflepuffs at their table.
After the delicious feast, Dumbledore asked the prefects to show the first years to their common rooms. But Lily and James stayed seated while the fifth year Gryffindor prefects stood up to lead away their new house mates.
"Won't you guys go?" Sirius asked Lily and James.
"No, we gave each prefect different duties," said James.
"Yeah," Lily nodded, "usually the fifth year prefects escort the first years."
"Then what will the rest of you do?" Jenna questioned.
"Patrol the corridors for one hour after curfew every night to make sure everyone's back in their common rooms," said James with a grin.
"We're gonne be screwed this year with you two idiots in charge," said Jenna jokingly, standing up with the rest of them.
"Oh don't say that, Jenny," Sirius said defensively, making James grin proudly. But his smile faded when Sirius went on and said, "you should at least give Lily more credit."
They laughed as James rolled his eyes, walking back to their common room. Lily, James, and Remus then bid them all goodnight, leaving to attend to their prefect duties and to patrol the halls.
But when Jenna entered her old dorm to change out of her Hogwarts robes, she found a note awaiting her on the bed.
She didn't even have to look at it to know it was from Dumbledore. So when she read it through, Jenna figured that he wanted to see her tonight in his office again. This time Jenna was prepared for the continual of her Occlumency lessons, having practiced over summer.
So as the rest of the seventh year Gryffindors were enjoying their first night at Hogwarts in the common room, Jenna took the opportunity and sneaked out of the portrait hole and toward Dumbledore's office.
But she couldn't have gone more than ten minutes that she stopped in her tracks when someone called after her.
"Jenna? What are you doing here?" Turning around abruptly, she saw Remus walking toward her with an amused smile on his lips.
"Oh, just going for a stroll." She shrugged with a grin. "You're not going to give me detention, are you?"
"No." Remus chuckled. "Unfortunately, I lack the ability to stand up to my friends and to tell them out. Otherwise James and Sirius would've been expelled before even getting to sixth year."
"True," Jenna laughed, but then their attention was caught by Peeves, who swished into the corridor with smirk.
"Ooooh! Loony, loopy Lupin!" He sang, his hands full of little stones that he carried around to throw at the students.
"Oh, shut up," Jenna mumbled, taking her wand and pointing it at him, saying, "Waddiwasi!"
With that, one of the little stones shot up with the speed of a bullet and flew into Peeves's nose. So cursing loudly, he immediately left the corridor, making Jenna and Remus laugh.
"Useful jinx." Remus smiled, looking impressed. "I'll make sure to use that the next time he was annoying me."
After a small chat with Remus, Jenna excused herself once more and walked toward Dumbledore's office, knocking and getting inside.
"Hello, Miss Potter," he beamed at her kindly from behind his desk, gesturing her to sit on a chair he had drawn near him and so Jenna took it.
"This won't take much of your time, seeing as it's already past your curfew, but it is indeed very important," he said with a smile.
Jenna expected him to tell her something of great cruciality, but instead Dumbledore offered her a bowl on his desk, saying, "Toffee?"
"Er... no thank you." Jenna shook her head, rather confused.
"Oh, but I insist." Dumbledore kept smiling at her, his blue eyes illuminating under the dim light of his office.
Jenna finally took one and placed it in her mouth, awaiting Dumbledore to tell her why she was there. But she took aback when he said,
"Did you enjoy the summer vacation, Miss Potter?"
"Er..." said Jenna hesitantly, swallowing the toffee. "It was good."
"Tell me more about it. What have you been up to?" he asked, his eyes piercing into hers.
"Um... mostly laying around or playing Quidditch with my family," she said, but Dumbledore looked at her in a way that she knew he wanted her to carry on. "Sirius joined us on Sundays for lunch, probably out of the fear of my mother," she chuckled at that, "but all in all, we did quite enjoy oursel —"
But Jenna was cut off when she suddenly felt her head start hurting and the next moments, her eyes fluttered shut, memories passing her mind in a blink of an eye as if someone was using Legilimency on her, the pictures changing quickly.
But at last she finally managed to stop it all when she saw the memory of her and Sirius in the common room as she was telling him about her lessons with Dumbledore.
"No!" Jenna yelled and finally managed to open her eyes, finding herself back in Dumbledore's office, panting. She looked up at him with widened eyes, breathless. "Wh-what happened?"
"You lost focus, Miss Potter. That's what happened," Dumbledore said softly, his eyes twinkling. "The thing is, when someone wants to look into your mind in real life, they won't be pointing a wand at you. They won't be counting to three. They do it unexpectedly. They do it when you're unprepared."
Jenna stared up at him, still not quiet sure of what had happened. But she nodded all the same.
"This year we'll be focusing on getting you on your guard, for every hour of every day," he said. "Now if you've got nothing else to tell me, I shall say goodbye."
Jenna got to her feet and walked toward the door, but before she could even touch the doorknob, she turned around guiltily to face him again.
"I-I'm sorry, Professor," she said in a small voice, "for telling Sirius about this."
"Oh well, I didn't expect you to keep it a secret for that long anyway," he chuckled. "But please, do try to keep it like that from the others for as long as possible. Until the time is right, at least. Now goodnight to you."
