It's been almost two weeks since Christmas now, and I haven't taken the necklace off once. I wore it to sleep, during the day, and didn't even take it off to shower.
At first, I was scared the silver would tarnish, leaving the ring and the chain it was dangling from looking dull. But I remembered pretty quickly that the Malfoy's had money, and surely they would buy their son only the best.
Just to make sure, though, I made George cast a spell to protect the metal and keep it in its original form.
I would've preferred doing it myself. I never really trusted the twins when it came to magic; pranking was too much of a hobby of theirs to do so.
But, seeing as I wasn't allowed to use magic outside of Hogwarts grounds yet, George had to do. And, surprisingly, Draco's gift still looked as beautiful as it did before.
Though, if he knew I let a Weasley hex his precious ring, he would probably Avada Kedavra me on the spot.
As much as I loved wearing it, I tried to hide the necklace as best as I could, not really feeling like explaining myself to Harry, Ron or the rest of his family on why exactly Draco had given me his ring.
Especially when I didn't even know why myself.
And up until now, I did a splendid job with it. Wearing only big hoodies and turtlenecks to hide the accessory underneath, while begging Fred and George not to say a word about it.
And that's exactly where it all went wrong now. Now that we were only a day away from going back to Hogwarts. Now they had to break.
I glared at them as they asked me for the third time in the last twenty minutes why I was wearing such warm clothes while sitting in front of the fireplace. Admittedly, it was becoming rather hot; Harry, Ginny and I huddled on one single couch, way too close together. I was regretting putting the T-shirt on underneath the jumper.
The twins were sitting in two identical armchairs opposite of us, while Ron had made himself comfortable on the floor.
"Seriously, Y/n, there's no need to wear such a thick jumper in the warmest place of the whole house," Fred teased, and I groaned.
"What is it with you and Y/n clothes today?" Ginny asked, confused, her gaze wandering from her brothers towards me, her brown eyes scanning me once. "Though, you do look a bit hot." She took the back of her hand to lay it on my forehead, pulling away almost as soon as she touched it. "Merlin, are you sure you're not getting a fever?" She asked, concerned.
I could see Fred and George had a hard time keeping it together; looking like they would explode with laughter any minute now.
"I feel completely fine," I grumbled, leaning further into the couch in hopes the topic of conversation would magically change.
"Even I'm sweating, there's no way you're not," Ron chimed in, and I glared at him. "What? I'm just saying," He sighed. He was wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt, eying me suspiciously.
"Merlin, Y/n, just take the damn jumper off so we can move on," Harry groaned, clearly just as annoyed we were still talking about this as I was. Though, for different reasons.
I sighed, looking around the room once, realising every single pair of eyes was on me. Fred and George both giving me a wink nobody else saw.
It would be weird if I didn't take it off now, wouldn't it?
I sighed once more before grabbing the hem of the jumper, pulling it over my head. "You're all proper weirdos for this," I grumbled while I was straightening out the white shirt I wore underneath.
Though, I'd be lying if I said this didn't feel a lot better. I could basically feel my body cooling down by the second.
"That's a pretty necklace," Ginny commented before I could tug the necklace under my shirt. I smiled softly, fidgeting with the ring and hoping Harry didn't hear her.
"Thanks," I mumbled, and she smiled before focusing back on the rest of the group.
"It is, I've never seen you wear it before," George said with a smirk, his voice raised to make sure everyone in the room heard him.
I glared at him once more, but both Harry's and Ron's eyes were already on me.
"Oh, me neither," Harry said, lost in his thoughts as he admired it a little too long. "Where'd you get?" He asked, interested.
"Uh-" I began, Fred's amused snort interrupting my train of thought as I searched for an excuse. "It was a Christmas gift," I smiled nervously, and he nodded; not enquiring about it any further.
Honesty was the best policy after all, right?
"Ginny is right. It's nice," He said after a while, and I swear I could see a little blush form on her cheeks.
Relieved, my previously tense body relaxed. Despite their efforts, the twins lost this round, and I was about to flash them a victorious smile when George spoke one last time.
"Oh, is that Malfoy's gift you were talking about?!" He gasped, pretending to realise only now.
My eyes grew wide, hissing a "Shut it," in his direction, but all eyes were already on me once again.
"Malfoy got you that?" Harry said quickly, his brows furrowing, jaw tensing slightly as he looked at the necklace once again.
"And what if he did?" I shot back, finally taking the ring in my hand and letting it fall under the T-shirt.
"Well-" he began, rather angrily but Fred cut him off before he could make his point. Probably for the better, seeing as Harry didn't really have a point.
We had been over this topic way too often now.
"Jeez, Harry, Calm down. I would've thought now that you're getting some action yourself you'd stop being so cranky over what your sister is doing," He said amused, his eyebrows raised.
I thought he was joking at first, but when Harry immediately closed his mouth, a slight blush forming on his face, my eyes shot wide open in surprise.
"Action?" I asked, my eyebrows raised; his previous attitude all forgotten about.
He didn't say anything, only muttering curse words under his breath so quietly probably not even Ginny, who was sitting right next to him, could hear them.
So, I diverted my eyes off of him, looking at the twins expectantly. Though, to my surprise, it was Ron who spoke first.
"Come on, Harry, Cho Chang is hardly someone to be embarrassed about," Ron said with a smirk, nudging his best friends leg. He glared at him angrily, knowing very well embarrassment was not the reason he didn't tell me about it.
"Cho Chang, huh?" I said, the amusement in my voice completely wiped away, as I looked directly in his eyes. He looked away almost as soon as my eyes caught his.
I remembered all the things she had said about me, about Wren. And I specifically remember telling Harry about it. Yet, here he was. Probably not even ashamed.
It was quiet in the room, the rest of the group probably confused by the sudden tension between Harry and me. "That's funny. I swear I told you she hated me," I said slowly, watching his reaction carefully.
Fred and George let out a muffled "Ohhhh," though they were clearly enjoying the drama they had caused. The only reason they started the whole necklace thing was probably because they were bored, anyway.
This was most likely exactly what they had hoped for. With a little twist.
My brother still didn't say a word, looking rather guilty with his eyes glued to the floor, his hands fidgeting with each other.
I sighed. "It's almost like our rivalry and my negative opinion of her didn't stop you from doing what you did," I then said, a small smirk growing on my face as I drew the parallel between them and Draco.
After all, this might be a good thing that will finally let me shake Harry off my back when it came to the platinum-blond boy.
He gulped but stayed quiet. Letting me know he got the message. And if he didn't accept it, he would've said something.
"Did I miss something?" Ron said after a while, looking back and forth between me and my brother with furrowed brows.
"No," I sighed, a satisfied smile on my face. "Absolutely nothing, Ron."
Ginny cleared her throat at the same time she got up, and my eyes followed her as she walked towards the door, a confused look on my face.
"I'm gonna-" She began, her words getting stuck in her throat as she cleared it once more. Though, instead of finishing her sentence, she just left the room, closing the door behind her with a thump.
We weren't close enough so that I could follow her out to check whether she was alright. It surely didn't seem like she was.
I raised my eyebrows, nodding towards the door she had left through as I looked at Fred and George; Hoping either of them would get up and do it for me.
It took them a while to understand what I wanted, but then they both got up and followed her out.
"Okay, now I missed something," Ron said, convinced of himself and I nodded.
"I'm afraid, this time, so did I," I huffed, before diverting my eyes off of the door and back onto my brother and his best friend, as the latter joined us on the couch.
"I miss Hogwarts," Ron sighed after minutes of quiet, and I found myself agreeing with the ginger boy once more. "Who would've thought I'd miss school. I sound like Hermione Granger," He laughed, and I saw Harry's lip twitch into a smile.
I missed Hogwarts, too. And definitely not just because going back would mean going back to see Draco.
I felt myself grabbing the ring through my shirt, caressing it once before letting go of it again.
Definitely not.
