14 | Dirty Work

I SIT ON THE couch, my legs dangling off the armrest as I throw a green grape into the air before it lands straight into my mouth. I chew on the sour fruit as I grab another one from the bowl on my lap.

Klaus stands beside the couch I sit on, pouring himself a drink. Caroline and Stefan sit on the couch across the wooden table in the middle.

"So some blood went missing from a few hospitals." Klaus starts, "What about Elena? Don't vampires with their humanity off tend to overindulge in human blood, or were you the exception?"

"Hold up." I say with three grapes in my mouth, "Elena turned her humanity off?"

Klaus chuckles at my muffling.

"Yes." Caroline says, leaning back on the couch with her arms crossed. "But you would know if you cared enough to hang around."

"But the thing is that I don't care, Caroline." I tell her, "Now where were we at accusing Elena of stealing blood from the hospital."

"It's not Elena." Stefan says, leaning forward with his elbows on his legs.

"Well, let's say for a moment that it was Silas." Klaus says, sitting on the armrest near my head. "I'm struggling to see how this affects me."

Stefan opens his mouth to reply but I hold up a finger to stop him.

"Hold on." I turn my neck to look at Klaus. "Who do you think you are putting that nasty ass beside my head?"

Klaus rolls his eyes and stands up, moving to sit on another chair.

"Go on." I nod towards Stefan.

"Look." he sighs, "Silas wants to die and be reunited with his one true love, but he's supernatural, so if he takes the cure and dies, he gets stuck on the Other Side."

"How Shakespearian." Klaus mumbles.

"But if he destroys the Other Side altogether, he can take the cure, die, and pass on, but in destroying it, every dead supernatural being will return to our side."

"That means every werewolf, every witch, every vampire." Caroline pipes in, "I wonder how many of those you personally killed. Care yet?"

I sit up, "Wait, all supernatural creatures I have ever killed will come back to our side if we don't stop Silas?"

Stefan and Caroline nod.

"You know that doesn't sound too bad." I say, "I do love killing people twice."

"Emilia." Stefan says, "Our lives, your life, is on the line here."

"My life is long gone, Stefan." I reply, "Plus, I love a challenge."

"Don't think so highly of yourself." Caroline says, "If everyone you killed comes back to life they'll not think twice but to come after you and they will kill you. You know they will."

"I think you've mistaken me for yourself, Caroline." I tell her, smirking as I stand up.

"Emilia." Stefan stands up as well, "You know where the cure is. Do you think it'll take a while before someone finds it and shoves it down your throat?"

"I do know where the cure is. And I know that it's safe."

"Is it really?" he asks, "You know Katherine cares about no one but herself."

"I do know that." I tell him, "But I also know that someone would rather shove it down her throat than mine."

"We're all winners if we stop Silas, Emilia." Stefan pleads, "Please we need your help."

I open my mouth but Caroline speaks first.

"You need us and we need you, Emilia." she says, "Aiden will run first thing when he knows about this. So really you're all on your own unless you're willing to help us, and yourself."

I purse my lips. These manipulative sons of bitches.

I walk back to the couch, "How do we stop him?"

They all smile as I plop back down on the couch and take my previous position.

"Bonnie said Silas needs to complete three massacres to do this spell." Stefan starts, "Before Professor Shane died, he convinced the pastor to blow up the Council. Next, he had you kill your hybrids, and now he only needs one more massacre, so if he's here, that's what he's doing. We need to find him."

"So we need to find out what his last massacre is and stop him from finishing it." I conclude, chewing on a grape.

They nod.

"What are we even looking for?" Caroline asks quietly as they rummage through Professor Shane's office.

I lean against the door and watch them.

"Well, if Shane really was working with Silas, chances are he was helping him plan his next move." Stefan answers.

"Where, on his evil villain to-do list?" Caroline scoffs, "'Steal blood, perform 3 massacres, pick up dry cleaning'?"

"Actually, not to nit-pick, but we evil villains usually use minions to pick up our dry cleaning, that sort of thing." Klaus pipes in.

"Why is he necessary again?" Caroline turns to Stefan.

"Well, we don't know what Silas can do, so if we do have to go head to head with him, an Original hybrid who can't die might come in handy." Stefan says.

"Besides, Stefan and I work well together, or at least we did in the twenties." Klaus adds.

"Well, granted my emotions were off."

"And that's why you were more fun, just as Damon is probably relishing in Elena's emotionless company in New York."

"My brother knows what he's doing."

"Does he? Don't underestimate the allure of darkness, Stefan. Even the purest hearts are drawn to it."

I snort, "Shut up before I punch you."

Caroline turns to me, "You know, a little help would be nice."

"I'm the look out." I reply.

"We don't need a look out." she scoffs, "And you're not even looking out. You're just standing there useless as always."

"Okay, I'll show just how useless I can get." I say, standing up straight and walking further into the room.

I pull open a drawer and search inside it before my eyes lock on a large book.

"Found it." I say, pulling out the large book and carrying it over to the desk.

It read "Symbolic Figures in the Dark Arts."

"This whole time you knew where it was?" Caroline asks, her face shocked and angry.

"No." I say, "The drawer said 'Do not open'. You idiots just can't see what's right in front of you."

"Wow." Caroline scoffs silently.

"That's just how useless I can get." I smile at her.

She rolls her eyes before her face becomes serious as she spots something.

"Didn't Bonnie talk about Expression Triangles?" Caroline asks before she points at a large intricate drawing of a triangle, "Here."

"In some schools of magic such as Expression, human sacrifice can be used as a focus for power. It is rumored that the addition of two supernatural sacrifices compounds the mystical energy, creating an Expression Triangle." Stefan reads from the page.

"Humans, that was the council fire." Caroline points at symbolic drawings, "Demons, Klaus' hybrid failure."

"Well, I wouldn't exactly call it a failure." Klaus mumbles before he asks, "What's the third?"

"Oh, no." Caroline gasps, her hand covering her mouth.

"Oh quit the dramatic gasp, what is it?" I move around the table to read from the book, "Witches."

"Witches?" Klaus asks.

"The sacrifice of twelve witches." I read from the page.

"Twelve humans, twelve hybrids, and twelve witches." Caroline says quietly.

"Is twelve his lucky number or something?"

"I think he's using Bonnie to kill those witches." Stefan says, "I need to get to Bonnie."

Before anyone could say anything, Stefan's instantly out the door.

Ten minutes later, Klaus and Caroline are sitting on the couch as they draw lines on the book while I sit on Shane's chair with my sheet propped up on his desk.

I sigh and stand up before I walk to the door.

"Where are you going?" Caroline asks.

"I'm starving." I reply.

She instantly stands up, "Emilia, you can't just go feed on someone. We're kinda laying low."

I roll my eyes, "Can't anyone starve for food anymore."

"Well it is you." Klaus says.

"I'll just leave before I feed you trash." I say before walking out.

I walk down the dark hallway, my footsteps light on the wooden floor. I turn the corner and head down the stairs till the first floor where the vending machine is.

Instead of putting money, I hug the vending machine and shake it furiously, forcing some of the snacks to fall down.

Pleased, I kneel down and take out a bag of Cheetos and a kit kat bar. I smile in triumph.

"What are you doing?"

"Feeding myself." I turn to Stefan, "What happened?"

"I didn't find Bonnie but I talked to her dad." he replies, "I think I know where Silas is."

I walk through the dark woods with Stefan. The moon illuminates down at us as we head towards the witch circle where Bonnie is.

"I'm really glad you're on our side, Emilia." Stefan says, his voice sincere.

"I'm on my own side, Stefan." I tell him, "The only reason I'm helping is for myself."

"Yeah but still, thank you."

I don't say anything as we come across a fire illuminating in front of us. I narrow my eyes at the sight in front of me.

Bonnie's lying on the ground, her eyes white and her nose bleeding as she struggles under a witch who's furious.

"Yield to the spirits, Bonnie! You can't fight us!" the witch says loudly.

Before I could blink, Stefan vamp speeds into the circle.

"Stop!" Stefan says, "It's not what you think."

"This is no place for a vampire." the witch sneers.

"She's working for Silas." Stefan says.

"Silas?"

"He brainwashed her to kill you."

Bonnie whimpers on the ground before the witch pulls out a dagger.

"Wait. What are you doing?" Stefan asks.

"If Silas has her, she's lost. We can't save her." the witch says.

"Wait." Stefan moves towards Bonnie but the witch flings out her arm and uses a spell to weaken Stefan.

Stefan grabs his head and staggers backwards to his knees.

"I have the power of twelve witches. You don't stand a chance!" the witch sneers.

I vamp speed towards the witch to attack her. But before I could touch her, I'm thrown backwards before my back harshly hits a tree.

I grunt as I fall to the floor on my knees beside Stefan who's groaning in pain. Klaus and Caroline appear beside us.

"They're linked. Bonnie's gonna kill them." Stefan says through a groan.

"Not if the witches kill her first." Klaus says.

"We need to save her." Caroline says.

"How? The only way to stop the witches is to kill them, and then Silas gets what he wants." Klaus says as I stand up.

"Spirits, take her soul. Free her from darkness." the witch says.

She holds the dagger over Bonnie as Bonnie screams in pain. Suddenly Caroline vamps into the circle and pulls the dagger into the witch's chest, killing her.

"No!" Klaus shouts.

I scoff as I watch the witches forming in the circle begin to drop and the torches' flames burns out. Caroline looks around, shocked, before she jogs over to Bonnie.

"Bonnie. Bonnie!" she exclaims.

"You're seriously the dumbest person I know Caroline." I scoff, "What was even the point of helping you guys out?"

I shake my head before I walk a way with mutter, "Waste of my time."

It's nighttime and I sit in Mystic Grill. The place is empty and I only sit at the bar. Soft music plays with fainted lights as I pour myself another glass of whiskey.

"Emilia Gilbert."

I jump slightly as I turn to look at who sits beside me on a barstool.

"Shane."

He smiles.

"Silas." I correct myself as his smile widens.

"I'm sorry but I don't have what you're looking for." I tell him, "So save yourself the trouble."

"But you do know who has it." he says.

"But you also know who has it, Silas, so why don't you get it yourself." I reply, taking a sip out of my whiskey.

"I like my work getting done by others." he says.

I sigh, "This is gonna take a while. Whiskey?"

"Sure." he smiles.

I smirk, "Get it yourself."

His smile falls.

"You do know how to function a glass right? "Cuz that would be a turn off if you didn't." I smirk slyly.

His face turns serious, "I'm done playing nice."

"Wow, broke you off faster than I thought I would." I snort, "Gotta give that one to myself."

"I need the cure, Emilia, and you're getting it for me."

"I don't like doing other people's dirty work." I tell him.

"Bring it to me and I'll do anything you want, darling." he says.

"What part of I don't like doing other people's dirty work did you not get?"

He moves his face closer to me and says quietly, "You have two days to get it for me."

He stands up and starts to walk away. I grab his arm before I pull him close till my mouth is next to his ear.

"I don't care who you are or what you can do." I say lowly, "I will not do your dirty work, Silas, find someone else."

I give him one last look before I walk away.
