Chapter Eighteen: Cory

Setup in my mum's backyard, we had spent the better part of the morning arranging streamers, balloons, and food platters for the gender reveal party. We had adorned the usual pink and blue stereotypes for decor theme, though made it known to all friends and family we will be refraining from using such colours on the twins.

Lily had decided that regardless of the gender, she was set on a woodlands theme nursery, full of autumnal colours and animals. Definitely no pink or blue welcome.

When Jojo came into the house with mum, cannons loaded with the colour that would give us the not-so-important detail about our children, she plopped them down on the counter and turned to all of us.

"I don't mean to dampen today, but can we have a quick family chat? I have something I want to say," she said.

We nodded, and Lily began to excuse herself to the other room until Jojo interrupted her.

"I said a family chat, Lily," she called out after her.

Brows turning down in affection, she turned back around and came after us, taking her rightful place at our dining table.

"I know you've all been worried about me," she started, looking at the table.

"We have. But we're here for you," mum said softly, extending a hand to my sister.

"I took the breakup with Mikey pretty rough but... I'm glad we broke up. Because I've discovered something about myself in the process." She casted a hesitant flance at all of us. "My new... look, isn't exactly a cry for help and I'm not depressed or anything just... I don't know what to do with these feelings."

"Breakups are rough, Jojo," Lily said softly. "There's no right or wrong way to deal with them. You just have to take each day at a time."

"I'm not overwhelmed with feelings because of the breakup," she whispered.

"What is it then?" I asked.

"I like someone."

"You do?"

She nodded. "They comforted me after Mikey publicly dumped me and... The look is really to impress them."

"Oh my darling daughter... You shouldn't have to change yourself to win someone," mum said softly.

Jojo shook her head and sighed. "I know. That's what they said. I'm telling you because things have progressed and we're now dating so it's time I say something."

"Okay," mum said. "You can tell us, Jojo."

"Mum, Cory, Lily... I'm gay."

"Okay," I said. "But can I have my skater girl sister back?"

"You don't care?" she asked surprised.

"I mean, I care that you feel comfortable telling us but... Jojo, we don't care who you want to date. As long as they treat you right, that's all that matters," I told her. When Lily and mum nodded along in unison, Jojo grinned.

"Why the overtly girly look though?" Lily questioned.

Jojo groaned. "Well this is kind of her style. And I thought maybe she was into that... before I knew she liked girls too. I was trying to impress her by being her friend and dressing similar but then at a party one thing led to another and..." A blush spread across her face.

Mum leaned over to my sister, tucking a lock of Jojo's hair behind her ear. "When can we meet her?"

"How about tomorrow?"

"That sounds lovely, dear."

Jojo bounded up to her feet, one hand shooting up to the air as she beamed like the sister I used to know. "Great. Now that's done, shall we get this party rolling?"

"There's still two hours until guests come, Jojo," Lily commented, quelling Jojo's sudden enthusiasm.

"Well let's at least get some sick beats!"

As Tristan and I stood by the food table, casually sipping on our drinks, my eyes were focussed on Lily. Even from afar, I could see her bottom lip quivering as she apologised to Casey for her behaviour.

To my relief, after a constant back and forth, Casey finally threw her arms around Lily again and all was right.

"Seems like we can finally hang out as us four again," I commented to Tristan.

"Fantastic!" he enthused, looking over at our girlfriends.

"It is time!" a voice suddenly boomed over the speakers. Turning my head, my eyes landed on my sister, standing on top of a box with a microphone in her hand--since when did we have a microphone? "Gather all for the most exciting event of today! The only reason any of us came to this party! To learn the most unimportant facts about the babies my brother put in Lily's womb!"

My palm came straight up to my face as I shook my head, unable to withstand the fact that my sister was blurting this nonsense. It didn't help that we had some ten-year olds in the crowd too.

"Can I please get a final show of hands for the predictions. Is baby A a girl?"

She tallied up the predictions and wrote them down on a board.

"And is baby A a boy?" Then she repeated the same process for baby B.

When she had finished counting the predictions, she then said, "Can the parents to be please make their way to the stage."

Awkwardly weaving through the crowd and glancing at her small box, I whispered up at her, "Is that supposed to be your stage?"

"Cory, do not mock the MC please," she said as loudly as she could into the microphone.

Digging into her bag she had over her shoulder, she pulled out two poppers with an A written on them.

"On my count, pull the poppers! One... two..."

Lily and I glanced at each other, across Jojo, smiling as we held our hands in position. Jojo was right. This did not matter in the slightest. But it was something we would know of the life to come. Whether they came out and were gay, straight, pansexual, or were assigned the wrong gender... the look Lily and I shared said we knew we would love them no matter what.

As Jojo and the crowd shouted three, and we turned the popper in excitement to learn of something about our children, Lily screamed with delight as blue confetti sprayed everywhere.

Then Jojo handed out the second set of poppers for baby B, going through the count down again.

Turning once more, we were showered with more blue.

Everyone screamed in excitement. A few hugged. But as I reached across Jojo to grab Lily in delight, Jojo called us to attention.

"Now, now. Please calm down everyone. Just because we've popped them doesn't mean we actually know the gender."

Glancing up at my sister, I cocked my head to the side.

"I never said which colour means which gender," she explained.

Lily smirked, shaking her head. We knew we had two of the same.

"If any of you don't know me, I'm not one to enjoy gender stereotypes. And according to my research, pink used to be a very masculine colour."

Turning my head up to my sister, I asked, "So? Are they boys are girls?"

Smiling, glancing between the two of us, she brought the microphone to her mouth and said, "You are having two girls!"
