Chapter 7-- Dark Shadows
‘’This storm is horrible.’’ Chandler sighed as the storm grew and soon flash flooded the roads and built up to the door of the store.
‘’I’ll go get some towels.’’
‘’I’ll give you a hand.’’
We walked towards the back of the store and up the stairs to the apartment. It looked like normal, maybe a little cleaner looking but normal.
‘’Did my sister say when she’d be back?’’
‘’No. She just said she had to go do something.’’
‘’Well I hope she found shelter. I wouldn’t want to walk home in this.’’ He shivered.
‘’Are you cold?’’ I stopped looking for the mop in the closet and turned to see him rubbing his arms.
‘’Yeah a little. I’ll go grab a jacket in a little while.’’
‘’Here.’’ I took my leather jacket off and wrapped it around him thanking being trapped under so much water because it made me accustomed to the cold.
‘’Thank you.’’ His cheeks tinted pink as he cuddled into the warmth of it.
‘’Don’t mention it.’’ I smiled and turned back to the closet. ‘’Here I found the mops.’’
We spent the next twenty minutes mopping and lining the bottom of the store door with towels in hope of slowing the flooding water. It did slow the water but it didn’t stop and there was no use trying.
‘’We’ll just have to do damage control in the morning. This is useless.’’ Chandler threw his arms up and walked away from the puddles of water on the ground.
‘’Curse the Gods.’’ I swore under my breath as the water crept closer and closer to me, the flash of lightening lighting up the cloud darkened sky.
I could hear Chandler sighing, his back turned to me and his arms raised to his head as he rubbed his temples. I almost laughed at how much my jacket wrinkled and engulfed his arms. He really was small.
‘’Hey, let’s go upstairs. We’ll wait for Alex up there.’’ He sighed once more before leading the way up the stairs and to the living room. ‘’What movie do you want to watch?’’
I shook my head and shrugged my shoulders. I didn’t know much about movies. I only knew what Daphney relayed to me about what she had happened to see whenever she had time.
‘’You don’t have a favourite movie?’’ He shuffled through the drawer under the television.
‘’No. I don’t really…. I’ve never seen one.’’ I shrugged from the couch.
‘’You’ve never seen a movie?’’ His brows furrowed and he looked at me weird.
‘’No.’’
‘’Okay. Well I guess we’ll start with the first movie I ever saw and we’ll work out way up from there. Fortunately, it’s the best movie ever made!’’ He grinned at me and pulled out a case making sure to hide it as he put it into a DVD player then ran over to sit beside me. ‘’Oh, this will be good.’’
‘’No, Mufasa he hasn’t forgotten you! Remember who you are Simba! You’re Mufasa’s son! You’re the one true king! God, no! Mufasa don’t leave he needs you!’’ Chandler sobs and rubs his eyes into my jacket as he clings to my side.
Chandler had barely finished crying from Mufasa’s death before Simba met Rafiki and he showed him his dad in the pond. Honestly, I almost cried myself but as soon as I heard the coming sobs of my angel, I couldn’t help but to smile down at him.
My angel.
I shook my head. He wasn’t mine. Not yet.
A sudden boom of thunder had Chandler squealing and jumping into my lap.
‘’Hey, its okay it’s just thunder.’’ I pat his head but he buried it deeper into my shirt.
‘’Storms always make me nervous.’’ He shuddered and curled into a tighter ball.
‘’Do you want me to take you to bed. I’m sure it’ll be over in the morning.’’
‘’But your first movie.’’ He lifted his head and his tears from the movie still clung to his eyes soon turning to tears of fear from the Gods work of a storm outside.
‘’We’ll watch it some other time.’’ I smiled and picked him up.
Chandler wrapped his legs around my waist and arms around my neck as I slowly made my way towards his room. He wasn’t heavy at all, he actually seemed too light but it was probably the God blood in me making it easier.
After a second of awkward movements I managed to open Chandler’s door and was welcomed by an almost exact replica of my mothers room; the sea foam blue walls, the mahogany bed, matching bedside tables and the large wooden windows sitting above a white plush seat. However, instead of paintings of the ocean and photographs of Chandler and Alex, he had walls lined with floating shelves full of books and vases of flowers.
Softly meneuvering Chandler into laying on his bed, I brushed the hair out of his eyes softly and pulled his covers to rest on top of his chest. He had fallen asleep before I could even take three steps away from the couch.
I walked over to his shelves and scanned the books. I ran my fingers over every single one and took note of their names. They were all Greek mythology. They had anything a human could learn about the pantheon.
My fingers stopped over one book in particular. It had my father’s name scribed into it in Greek.
Ποσειδων
‘’I told you the first day we met, I love Greek mythology.’’ A groggy voice whispered and I turned to see Chandler’s half lidded eyes watching me.
‘’Yeah, you did too. Get some sleep.’’ I smiled and went to leave but was startled when I heard a thump and arms wrap around me from behind, a small face buried its way into my back.
‘’Please don’t go. Please stay.’’ He pleaded and I walked him back towards his bed but he wouldn’t let me go and a whimper left his throat as another wave of thunder crashed through the skies.
‘’I’ll stay.’’ I whispered in hopes of not scaring him anymore and he climbed into his bed puling me along with him until we were both under his blankets staring at each other, barely thirty centimetres away from each other.
‘’Where have you been all this time?’’ He whispered, the thunder completely waking him up for a conversation.
‘’What do you mean?’’
‘’Lannie never mentioned where you were. She was always sad if it was asked so we never did.’’
‘’I was with my father.’’
‘’Yeah, she said something like that but where is your father?’’
‘’He’s in his pa- in his house. I left home with Daphney.’’ I tried not to slip up and mention his palace. This boy had read everything to know about our world and he was smart. I couldn’t let him know. It would get him more involved than he needed to be.
‘’Who is Daphney to you?’’
‘’She’s my… She’s my guardian. She’s taken care of me for all of my life.’’ I smiled at that.
‘’So Daphney is your step mother?’’
‘’Oh Gods no.’’ I shook my head at that. Daphne served my father but that didn’t mean she had to like him, in any way.
‘’Then why did you father not take care of you?’’
‘’It’s complicated.’’
‘’Sorry.’’ He frowned.
‘’It’s fine.’’ I lifted his head and smiled at him, his frown deepened for a second before he moved close and buried his head under mine getting comfortable.
Soon his breath evened out, a sign he had fallen asleep. I took the chance to wrap my arms around him and drag him the small distance until he was pressed as close to me as possible and buried my nose into his hair and breathed him in lulling myself to sleep unaware to the storm still raging outside encasing a dark shadow of a man before he disappeared into the wind.
