Chapter 7- The struggle

Maya's POV

(Recap)

Lukas coughed at little, then tried so gasp, but he choked instead and fell back asleep. He wasn't dead!

I gasped, I knew what I had to do.

I inhaled as much air that I could fit into my lungs.

I lowered my head down over him.

I touched my lips to his, then exhaled as hard as I knew how to.

He jolted upward, almost bumping into my head. He coughed, then hyperventilated until he had enough air.

"Thank you, Maya," he said breathlessly. He coughed a little more. I smiled with tears in my eyes and hugged him tightly. It was the best feeling ever.

Aiden's POV

I told Katcha everything; how we had a survival hut, about Jeb, about Petra, and about what I had done to Jesse. She listened to it all and seemed deeply invested in what I was saying.

"Wow, you've been through a lot, haven't you?" she said when I was finished.

"Yeah, I guess so," I said.

"I guess so?! Aiden, your whole world is crashing down right in front of you, and all you have to say is," she mimicked my voice, "Yeah, I guess so."

"Wow, that sounds just like me," I said sarcastically.

"I'm here to help you, okay? I'm going to help you make things right," she said standing up, "Starting with that leg of yours. Drink one of those healing potions."

Without question, I got up and examined the potions sitting on a table.

"I'm not good with potions," I admitted, "How do I know if this one is a potion of healing or poison?"

"Um, drink the green one," she said.

I picked up the bottle with a green substance in it. I pulled off the top and was about to drink, when she exclaimed,

"NO NO NO! WAIT! The green one's poison! I just remembered!"

She startled me so I accidentally dropped the glass onto the floor.

"Gah!" I cried as a stepped back, then winced in pain because I accidentally used my broken leg.

"No, red is healing, or was it blue?" she contemplated.

"I'm just going to drink this red one and see what happens," I said. I pulled it off the shelf and drank.

My entire body buzzed, and I really shouldn't have had that whole thing at once. The buzzing moved down to my leg. I felt the pain in my leg release, like the tension on it dissipated.

"How's your leg?" Katcha asked. I stepped on it just to make sure.

"Good as new!" I exclaimed happily as I jumped up and down.

"Alright, now time to save Louie and Mia!" she said.

"Lukas and Maya," I corrected.

"Right, let's go!"

"Wait a minute," I said, "Carter locked the door behind him when he left. How are we supposed to get out?"

"Hmmm...," thought Katcha, "Got any bobby pins on you?"

I lifted an eyebrow.

"Right. Sorry."

Katcha thought some more.

"Well, you wanna just give it a try?"

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Just try to open the door," she said like the answer was as plain as day.

Even though I highly doubted Carter didn't actually lock the door, I tried opening it anyway.

There's no way he thinks I'm that...

Click!

...Stupid

The door opened. I guess he does think I'm that stupid. Or he just thought I couldn't walk well with my leg.

"We're in!" Katcha exclaimed, "Er, out."

"Come on!" I said running down the hallway.

Petra's POV

The boy who called Jesse stepped forward into view. The rain was gushing down by now and the sky looked darker than black.

I jumped when I saw him. I knew who he was.

He pulled out his enchanted diamond sword, which seemed to glow in the dark, illuminating his face slightly.

Jesse furrowed her brows and pulled out her sword as well. I followed her movement.

"Don't even try, Carter!" she yelled, "There's two of us and one of you!"

The sound of the rain made Jesse's voice sound muffled, even though she was yelling.

"And there's about to be none of you!" shouted Carter.

He charged Jesse, catching her off guard. He slammed is sword into her side, knocking her out.

She hit the ground in slow motion. I could see the look of pain on her face.

"JESSE!" I screamed. I could feel something rising up in me. I'm not sure if I wanted to burst out in tears, or scream at the top of my lungs, or completely annihilate Carter.

My tears mixed with rain water as the liquid splashed down the front of my face.

There was an ear-piercing crashing of thunder as lightning darted across the black sky.

"AHHH!" I screamed as I plunged my sword at Carter.

He swiftly blocked it and knocked me backward.

I got back up with adrenaline coursing through my veins. I felt cold and sweaty all at the same time. I wasn't giving up yet.

Carter charged forward and smashed my arm with his sword. I fell back again because of the enchantments on his sword.

I fell to the ground into a puddle. Carter pounded his sword into the ground, dangerously close to my arm. My heart rate picked up as I rolled out of the way and stood back up.

My hands trembled as I held my sword, but I tried to not let it show.

I screamed as I attempted another hit at him. He blocked it again, shoving me off.

He tried to swipe his sword through my neck, but I successfully ducked.

I tried to hit his leg, but he jumped backward.

He took another swing at me, but I swiftly blocked.

My lungs were surging as I angrily swiped my sword at him.

He blocked, this time twisting my sword out of my hand. It flew up into the air, and in that moment, my mind said an all-too-true statement:

It's over.

He thrust his sword across my chest, knocking me over the second time and probably leaving a gnarly sscar.

As I lay helplessly crying on the ground, he kicked me in the face, giving me a mouthful of blood.

"You're FINISHED, Petra," he yelled. Then, he pounded his sword straight into my leg, probably breaking a bone.

"GAHHH!" I screamed in pain.

I looked over and saw Jesse, still on the ground. She was clutching her bleeding side while using her other arm to support herself. She looked weak and she trembled slightly.

Before I was ready, I looked back and saw Carter thrusting his sword straight at me. It was so sudden it look as if he were moving in slow-motion.

"NOO!" I heard Jesse scream.

The last thing I saw was Jesse using the last of her strength to jump out in front of the blade of Carter's sword.

Then, everything went black.
