Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call (Part 3)
Walking through the grid, I remembered one of the thing I had heard before, they could emancipate your teeth? Was that it? I'm not sure. I rode the elevator down to the next test, which had a glass panel that I could look through to see a gun. At least at looked like one from where I was standing.
As I walked through an open door, I saw Wheatley through one of the slits in the wall.
"Hey, hey! You made it! You see that podium, over there? I think the gun should be on there. It might have fallen off. Can you see it?"
I moved closer and noticed that it was simply the frame to hold the gun. The gun itself was elsewhere. I was going to turn around and try and tell him, but the podium collapsed and I fell into a pit. Luckily, the boots broke my fall.
"Can you see it anywhere down there?!"
I walked forward a bit and looked around.
"Also, are you alive?! Yeah, that's important, should've asked that first."
I saw a few panels that went up in a spiral, they clearly weren't supposed to be there. On the top of the panel staircase was the Portal Device. I don't know why everyone else calls it a gun, it's nothing like one. On the walls beside the gun, were more murals of me. Who keeps on making those? It's creepy.
I walked up to the device and saw that it wasn't the dual version. Just the blue portal. I picked it up, staggering a bit, forgetting its weight. I shot a portal next to one of the murals and jumped through. I could hear Wheatley rambling on about what he would do if he saw me dead. I think he said he would bury me.
Who's in charge, anyway? I thought to myself as I walked up some stairs and through an office room. I noticed that the opening at the end lead to one of the testing courses. The opening had broken glass everywhere. It took me a second or two to realize that I was in one of those office rooms. I looked around a little, curious of what was in them, and jumped into the course.
Another easy one. There was an orange portal on the other side of the gap that was in between me and it. I put a blue portal on the wall and walked through it. Then I had to do the opposite; put a blue portal on the gap across from this platform and walk through the orange portal that I just came out of. And that's what I did. I walked through the door and into the elevator.
The elevator lowered down to another testing course (obviously) and I heard the voice say that this test is very dangerous.
Acid pits?! I thought. I wasn't expecting those until at least 3 more. I walked forward a bit and breathed out when I saw that it was just another cube and button test. There was a cube dispenser above a large put and a button platform by a panel of glass. Last time I tested, the glass wasn't broken.
I tried to do something a bit fun; I was going to give momentum to the cube by placing a portal on the ground and one on the wall by the button.
The cube dropped, went through the portal, but missed the button by a couple of inches. Oh, well, I thought. I smiled at the thought of the momentum again. That was my favorite. And seeing how run down the place is, I don't feel like I'm being rushed every test.
I picked up the cube with the device, nearly forgetting it had the ability, and put it on the button. I wasn't really listening to what the voice was saying, but I heard him say one thing.
"Smooth Jazz will be deployed in 3, 2, 1."
To be honest, I liked the jazz, I wasn't too big of a fan for it but it was pretty relaxing for a facility known for murdering humans. I walked through the door and recognized another familiar test from before. The Jazz faded out and I looked around.
I saw 2 platforms with a cube on one of them, a pit with a cube in it, and two buttons by the door. (The kind of button that you stand on.)
All of the first tests are always so easy. I shot a blue portal on the wall and exited through the orange one on top of one of the platforms. I picked up the cube, jumped down and placed it on the button.
Where was Wheatley, anyway? I'm probably gonna need him if I want to get out of here. I don't know my way around Aperture, a robot probably does.
I turned around, facing the small pit, and shot a portal beneath the cube, which landed on the platform. I jumped down through the portal with it, giving myself the un-required momentum. I zoomed out of the portal by the cube and knocked it off the platform, causing me to lose most of my momentum. I'm actually pretty glad I lost it, otherwise I probably would've hit the wall. It's good to have a rush like that every now and then.
I picked up the cube, placed it on the button, and ran through the door. But there wasn't an elevator, no. Just another room with glass at the ceiling and an orange portal above it.
"A previous statement suggesting that we would not monitor this test was an outright fabrication."
I'd heard that before... In this same room. She said it. This proves it, she must be gone forever...
I shot a blue portal on the ground and jumped through. When I landed on the glass this time, it shattered and became more like a ramp, but it still had it's glass frame. I walked up the glass frame and onto the normal 'Aperture White Floor.' Obviously, that isn't what it's called, I'll just go with it.
There was a wall made of scrap metal filled with holes and whatnot. I ignored it and went around into the elevator. I was wondering about where Wheatley was as the elevator slowed to a stop.
There was a heap of scrap metal on the floor. I simply walked over it and into the chamber. There was another wall of scrap metal, so I shot a blue portal beneath me and came out of an orange portal on an extended panel. Looking around, I realized that it was probably about momentum. There was a panel with an orange portal on it to my right, and a cube dispenser in the distance.
I shot a blue portal on the cube dispenser, knowing it must come out of this panel, and pushed a button. The cube came flying out of the panel, but I wasn't fast enough to catch it. It flew into a pit of goo that stood between me and the dispenser. I pushed the button again and stood just outside of the path the cube took. I managed to catch it this time.
I set the cube on a platform button and looked around. There were panels slanted in a staircase that lead up to a platform. That's new. I thought. At least they made some improvements.
At the top of the staircase were two buttons and a locked exit door. One of which, had one of the 'Dotted Wires' that showed where the current lead. I pushed the one on the left and a wall rose up in the path of the cube from before. After a second, it went back down. I pushed the other one and it caused another cube dispenser to drop one. It took me a second, but I figured it out.
I shot a portal beneath the second cube dispenser and pushed the button, causing the wall to form again. I pushed the other one and the cube dropped through it and came out of the orange one on the panel. The cube hit the wall just before it lowered itself back down. I jumped down from the platform and grabbed the cube. I placed it on the button by the door and walked through once again.
Arriving at the next test, I heard one word that the pre-recorded message stand out to me.
"This next test applies the laws of momentum to movement through portals. If the laws of physics no longer apply in the future, god help you."
God help me. No thanks, god. I've got this. My favorite part of testing. There was a large pit in the middle of the floor. There was a panel on the wall behind it with an orange portal on it. On the opposite side from the panel was a raised platform. There was a cube inside of a glass box, as well.
I shot a blue portal at the floor and jumped through, causing me to fling onto the other side of the room and onto the platform. Now that I was on top of the glass box in the corner of the platform, there was a hole for me to shoot the portal in. I did so, and the cube entered it and exited the orange portal that was on the panel. I shot a portal in the pit again and brought the cube with me as I flung across the room once again.
I set the cube down on the button and ran into the elevator. It slowed down to what didn't appear to be much of a test. I saw an orange portal on the floor and another wall of scrap metal.
"Hey! Oy oy! I'm up here!"
I looked up and saw Wheatley once again, he was attached to his rail on the ceiling.
"Oh, brilliant! You did find a portal gun! You know, it just goes to show... That people with brain damage Are the real heroes. Aren't they at the end of the day, brave."
I rolled my eyes. He still thought I had brain damage.
"Anyways, pop a portal on that wall behind me, there. And I'll meet you on the other side."
I shot a blue portal through one of the holes in the scrap metal wall and dropped through the orange one on the floor.
"Alright, listen. Let me lay something on here that's pretty heavy. They told me: Never, ever, ever disengage myself from my management rail, or I would die." He said, shaking his head.
Really now?
"Now, we're out of options here. So get ready to catch me on the off chance that I'm not dead the moment I pop off this thing."
I was okay with catching him, although I hope my reflexes are still okay after about 7 nine's of sleep.
"Okay, on 3. Ready? One... Two... Three!"
He backed up a little.
"It's too high! It's too high! isn't it, really? You know what, three two one just gives you too much time to thing about it, so let's uh, let's go on one then. ONE!"
He popped right off of his rail.
"Catchme catchme catchme catch- Oof!"
I walked over to him, he was laying on the floor. I almost chuckled at it, but I kind of felt bad.
"I... Am not dead! I'm not dead! Haha!"
I picked him up and gave an awkward smile.
"Plug me into that stick on the wall over there and I'll show you something, you'll be impressed by this."
A panel flipped over, revealing a little docking area for him. I plugged him in and he began again.
"Yeah, I-I can't do it if you're watching... I'm serious, just turn around."
I sighed and turned around. After a moment, I heard a few button typing sounds.
"Alright, you can turn around now."
I turned around and the wall started opening up for an exit from the tests. Now I gave a real smile. The port that he was in slid back into the wall after kicking him of of it.
"Bam! Secret panel! That I opened... While you're back was turned. Just er, pick me up, take me with you."
I picked him up and walked through the door/panel, which lead to a room. A second after being in the room, it slid open and revealed a catwalk with a longways down. Meaning, the bottom isn't visible.
