Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call (Part 2)
"Alright, you know what? That's close enough. Just hold tight."
He went back up into his ceiling panel to control the room again. This time I was ready to try and keep my balance. Once we started moving again, I fell. Or at least I thought I did. I noticed that I was wearing slightly heavy white boots. They had black strips at the back of both of them that curled out and touched the ground. There's some kind of technology that didn't allow me to fall.
"Alright, I wasn't gonna mention this to you, but I'm in PRETTY HOT WATER HERE!" He said, as more walls broke away.
"The reserve power ran out, so of course the whole Relaxation Center starts waking up the bloody test subjects."
I looked down, we were moving somewhere. The pit below us seemed bottomless.
"And nobody tells me anything! Noooo, why should they tell me anything?! Why should I be kept informed?! You know, about the life functions of the 10,000 bloody test subjects I'm supposed to be in charge of!"
He moved the room up to another one, looking for a way around it.
"I just gotta get through here!" He shouted.
He crashed right into it and it fell down into the abyss. He continued moving it along. After a minute or two, he came to a wall with large yellow text on it.
DOCKING PORT BELOW
"Alright! I think this is a docking station! On the other side of this wall is one of the old testing tracks. There's a piece of equipment in there that we're going to need to get out of here!"
At least he's trying to help. He rushed the room towards the wall extremely quickly. It hit the wall hard and it cracked a bit.
"Good news! That is not a docking station! So there's one mystery solved."
He was a bit, how do I put it....... Dumb. I can understand it if he thought I had brain damage, but the text is right there. Maybe he just wasn't taught how to read as a robot, or whatever he is...
"Okay, I'm going to attempt a manual override on this wall! Could get a bit technical, hang on..." He said.
A 'Manual Override', huh? He hit the wall again with much more force. The place around the wall looked pretty bad. It had vines growing everywhere around it. I could see a tiny bit through some cracks in the wall, not entirely, though.
"Almost there! Remember; you're looking for a gun that makes holes! Not bullet holes! Don't worry, you'll figure it out. Seriously do hold on this time!"
With that, he charged at the wall once again, at full speed. The wall cracked open and uncovered a room, I was standing on top of it. There was cracked glass that I could break to get in. I looked at the robot one last time, seeing as he came back down, and saw the name 'Wheatley' on it. I guess that's him. He stared at me as I finally decided to break through the glass and into the room.
The boots were surprisingly protective for what they were. I imagine thy cost a fortune, I literally can't even fall while I have them on. I looked around the room that I was in. EVERYTHING was white. There was a toilet and a small desk with a clipboard on it. I picked it up and read:
NAME: Chell
GENDER: Female
FAT: Yes
I stopped there. I clearly wasn't fat at all. And I'm not just saying that. Who puts that in a file anyway? And they didn't even know my last name? I can't even remember my last name. But this place looks pretty important, yet they can't even find out my last name? There were vines growing everywhere around me, it was clearly abandoned, or just mistreated.
Just then it triggered into my mind. If I could've spoken, I would've said: "OHHHH I REMEMBER!"
Because I remember Aperture. They tested me before - she tested me before. And I defeated her. So how did I get here again?
I looked outside of the glass and recognized this place the second I noticed it. It was the first room. I despise this place. I thought I had escaped, too. At least now I knew what I was doing. I think. Finally, I heard the voice again.
"Hello, , welcome to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. We are currently experiencing technical difficulty due to potential apocalyptic significance beyond our control. However, due to emergency testing protocols, testing can be done. These pre-recorded messages will provide motivational and structural support, even in the event of..."
I tuned the voice out. It was mostly just a bunch of nonsense. I waited for the line where he says 'The portal will open in 3, 2, 1.' And when it came, I darted through the portal and looked at myself through the other one. I was wearing an orange jumpsuit around my waist and a white sweatshirt. The same thing as last time. I wandered on through the course, an I got to the cube and button test.
It was easy, really. But I feared that the button or the door or maybe even the cube dispenser might be malfunctioning after so long. Thankfully, they didn't. I did the test quickly and walked through the door, where I was greeted by a new escape elevator, as well as a new, what were they called, 'Particle Fields?' Anyway, they both looked different. As I walked into the elevator, I paid attention to which way I went. Down. I wasn't surprised.
It was about this time that I realized that I might be stuck down here for life. There probably was an exit, but I can only reach the tests. Then I remembered those small debs that I found before. It was probably some test subject who had lost his mind from all of the tests. I knew I shouldn't have trusted Wheatley... (Or at least I think that's his name.)
I entered the next test and looked around. I saw 2 glass panels on either side of the room and buttons by them. There was a cube in one and a button in the other. There was another glass panel of the middle of the two with an exit door inside.
I noticed light shining into the chamber onto the floor. I quickly looked up. There was a large hole in the ceiling with many metal parts. i could see daylight coming from it. Light! I thought. I attempted to climb up, but there was no way to get out. The ceiling was too high. They thought of everything.
I sighed and decided to oblige. It was just like the test from before, only I get to decide where the portals go, and at what time they do so. By using the buttons. I pushed the button next to the glass with the cube inside and walked through the orange portal on the wall.
Walking through portals Is an experience that cannot be explained. It just gives you such a rush. Testing itself gave you a rush. Although it means you've been captured and taken away from your family, you get to feel the rush of testing. I can see why they want us to, but I wouldn't put so much money into it.
I picked up the cube, which felt heavier then I expected, and walked back through. It occurred to me that if I really wanted to, I could through the cube into the hole in the ceiling and into the room with the button in it. I decided not to, seeing as I only get one cube. I set it down, pushed the button, and walked through the portal with the cube in my hand. I threw it onto the button, which made that satisfying sound when it's being pushed.
I sighed again and pushed the button for the exit door, I walked through the portal and into the elevator. Testing can feel so long sometimes.
