Chapter Two: How To Confront Your Soon To Be Ex 101

Nova's high heels clacked against the tile floors as we walked, like a big fat warning that read: get out of my way or face my wrath. And people listened alright. As we waltzed through the halls, once a person saw Nova, they immediately stepped back to let her pass.

The thing was, she didn't look like a bitch. She had a smile on her face, nodding at select people as they passed by in the halls. Those big blue eyes would gaze over at me once in a while and she'd give me a gigantic smile.

"Hey guys, wait up!" a high pitched voice called out from the end of the hallway. Nova rolled her eyes, before turning to look over at the girl that was currently running over towards us as if it was a matter of life or death.

"God, this dumb little thing is still following us? Even after we ignored her during the entire summer? Clearly someone can't take a hint," Nova muttered under her breath, annoyance written on her face.

Arabella took the final steps towards us, with a gigantic smile big enough to blind an entire hoard of people.

Arabella was Nova's newest puppy, who followed her around like they'd be stuck together like glue. Looking over at Arabella, with those round brown eyes of hers and that mess of pitch black hair that tumbled from her head, I guessed she'd be here for three months at most. It was always the way things worked, no exceptions.

"So, how was your summer everyone?" her high pitched voice asked, her head finally turning over at me to acknowledge my existence.

As we continued walking down the hall, I could just imagine how we looked like to onlookers. Basically that stereotypical image depicting popular girl, with the leader in the front and her lackeys directly behind her. We seemed to eagerly feed the stereotype.

"Oh, well I'm sure you know what I did," Nova gave out a laugh, "I posted a photo onto my Instagram basically every single day. But here, I'll list it out to you. Venice, Rome, Monaco, Marseille and Barcelona." Arabella's mouth dropped for a split second as she digested the information.

"Wait, you went to Europe? I've never even gone there in my life..." her voice faltered as she looked into the distance. Not even a moment later, she seemed to shake it off as she turned to me with a gigantic grin on her face. Her big black curls bounced with the movement, falling down onto her shoulders.

"So, what about you?"

"Um... Does Netflix count?" I asked, watching as Nova bursted into laughter.

"No wonder you look like ten pounds bigger since the last time I saw you." her laughter seemed to echo through the halls, seemingly catching the attention of every single person we passed. My heart stopped cold in my chest, the blow of her words like a slap directly in the face. From the corner of my eye, I watched as Nova glanced over at me, noticing my reaction.

"Ah c'mon, don't be so emotional. I was just joking," she scoffed, reaching into her Gucci purse.

Maybe she was right... It was just a joke. About my weight-

"Oh my God, River. You don't need to be such a baby about the whole thing. Fine, I'm sorry, kay?" Nova looked over at Arabella and shrugged her shoulders with a smirk. Without even looking over at Nova, I could feel her rolling her eyes from a mile away.

"Yeah, it's fine. I guess I'm just a bit emotional today or something..." I muttered. Arabella giggled, giving me a lopsided grin.

I've only been around these two for a total of twenty minutes and yet I couldn't seem to handle staying around them for a second longer. Honestly, I need new friends. Except that would be social suicide.

"I'm gonna go find my first period class, so I'll see you guys later," I said with a forced smile, giving a small wave before turning my back to the two of them. So much for a good first day back at school.

From behind me, Nova gave out a laugh.

"Yeah, I should get going too," she looked around the hall for a moment, "I wanna see if Kevin's in any of my classes." Arabella eyes widened like a deer in headlights, her ears perking up at the mention of a guy's name.

You see, when anyone of the male sex was mentioned, Arabella was all over the conversation.

"Who's Kevin?" she squealed, her stupid high pitched voice booming throughout the school like an atomic bomb. I looked back over at them, watching as Nova quickly put her finger to her lip, trying to shush the big mouth that was in front of her. But it was too late; the damage had been done.

Like magic, after a moment of pushing and shoving, a guy stepped out of the mass of people and took a step directly in front of Nova. His eyes watched her carefully, not even a hint of anger tainting his large green eyes. But he was the opposite of calm.

His chest rose and fell with each breath he took as he balled up his hands into fists. Nova stifled a laugh as she crossed her arms onto her chest. The whole hall waited with baited breath, watching the scene unfold.

Did nobody have classes that they needed to go to? Anything else to do besides watch whatever this was?

"Oh, I'm so scared," Nova spat, looking over her boyfriend with a smirk. Denis was his name, I believe.

"What the fuck have you been doing?" he growled, taking a step forward. Nova's sculpted eyebrow rose, a smirk taking hold of her picture perfect face.

"If you're wondering if I cheated on you, the answer is as noticeable as the acne on your face," for a split second , his face morphed into a sea of hurt, but he quickly recovered.

"When you're at the OBGYN, talking to your doctor about being sixteen and pregnant, you'll regret going around and making off with some random guy behind your boyfriend's back!" he screamed, his whole body turning red with rage. Nova narrowed her eyes at him, before simply shrugging her shoulders.

"Here's where you're wrong, Denis. See the thing is, I don't date losers and you clearly are one. Which brings me to my question... When did you ever think I was dating you in the first place?"

The whole crowd of people burst into laughter, a couple of them shouting out a long chorus of "oh" right into Denis' face. And he could do nothing but watch, as Nova strutted down the hall with a gigantic smile plastered right onto her face.
