Nightmare

He stood on the precipice of destruction, the rumble beneath his feet a clear indication of what's to come. The innocent stayed playing, hidden behind walls one could only hope would protect them. I watched him with his blue ball cap staring off towards the wooded horizon.

My chest felt tight, how could he stand so calmly. He was always a strange one. Convinced that he was doing the right thing for his body with the daily walks. What he ate, did quite the opposite. The trees on the horizon began to shake violently with the howling winds that uprooted them as it demanded a clear way through.

That wasn't the worst of it. Tiny giggles broke my gaze for a split second. A split second too long. Heavy rains ripped through the houses, sending branches crashing through windows and tearing up sidings from homes.

The sound of a freight train pierced through the violent air unfolding into the chaos. I blinked and the man was gone. The storm upon us. Tearing apart our home. I ran for my babies, pulling them into a tight embrace as waves upon waves of debris tore through the happy walls.

Raging winds and whipping limbs threatened to steal my daughter from my arms. I held on firmly as she cried, her brother's face buried into my chest to shield him from what's to come.

Why was she the only one slipping! My heart was pounding furiously in my ears, deafening them to the screams. Still I held on for dear life. I would not let this storm take my babies.

I gripped her little waist with my legs, she wrapped her tiny arms around me and her brother, her hazel eyes begging me to make the storm go away. I wished I could. I prayed so hard. Cuts and bruises now riddled my body, but the remained unscathed. I considered that a blessing as the storm raged on. Water now rushed around us, we no longer had a firm hold on anything. The only thing I was sure of now, is that no matter what I'd never let them go.

Slowly the storm subsided. A rainbow appeared giving me hope.
