Chapter 7
Poolpaw watched as the sun started setting on the horizon. She'd made a thorn stick into her paw-pad so she wouldn't be busy with training. Luckily, Flowertail had said it will be good by tomorrow, so she had to stay in camp.
She knew this was so, so wrong. Am I crazy? Yes, she was. She would do anything to not break the warrior code.. bit she had promised Sunpaw and she didn't want to disappoint her.
Poolpaw got to her paws. Glancing around the nests, she looked for eyes glancing in the darkness. She skirted to the clearing, keeping to the shadows.
She crept toward the tunnel and crouched in the entrance. She could hear Rainpelt keeping watch outside, her pelt brushing the tunnel as she fidgeted. She waited until she heard her paw steps pad away. She waited a moment, then scooted through through the tunnel and slipped into the bushes on the other side.
No sign of Rainpelt.
She darted out from the snow and clambered over a rock, slipping down behind in, her breath coming fast.
Silently, swiftly, she raced along the ravine and bounded up the rocks, careful not to disturb any loose stones. The moon lit her way as she scrambled over the top and sneaked into the forest.
She took a deep breath. Please forgive me, StarClan...
She then went through the bushes, leaves crunching under her paws and she saw Sunpaw, who was sitting underneath the Great Rock.
Sunpaw sat up, eyes brightening. "Hey," she purred happily.
Poolpaw had a small anger at Sunpaw. I shouldn't be doing this! And neither should you! "You're lucky I was able to get away." She looked at Sunpaw in the eyes.
Sunpaw got up and shook some leaves out of their fur. "Was it difficult? I suppose I didn't really think about how hard it would be for you to get away. I mean, it's always easy for me to get away, sorry."
Poolpaw looked in horror. THEY BREAK THE WARRIOR CODE ALL THE TIME!?
Sunpaw's tail swished and they padded over. "How was your day?"
Poolpaw thought of basically getting a thorn in her pad and having to stay in camp all day. "Fine, I guess.." She needed to do something. "I'll race you to the top of that oak!" She raced away.
She heard Sunpaw's mew behind her. "Oh, your so on!"
Poolpaw jumped up with her claws stretched out, and gripped the bark with her front claws. Taking a deep breath, she scooted upward, bounding onto a low branch.
Sunpaw leaped straight up onto the branch above Poolpaw instantly.
Poolpaw reached up to a knotty hole and was hanging from it. "Gah... how do you always do it?"
"Moons of practice." Sunpaw mewed, "Just focus and use your back legs to propel yourself up."
Poolpaw nodded and did as Sunpaw told her. She dug her claws into the knotty hole and hauled herself up.
Poolpaw looked up at Sunpaw as she caught bark with her claw and propelled herself upward. "I know you have a smug face."
Sunpaw dropped down on Poolpaw's level and had a smirk on her face. "Aww, how'd you know."
Poolpaw sighed. "I hate you." She then scrambled up to the next branch.
Sunpaw laughed, lightly leaping up to the next branch. "You loveeeeeee me."
Poolpaw rolled her eyes. "In your dreams." She jumped up to the next branch.
"Hmmm...maybe.." Sunpaw started laughing as she jumped up to the next branch while giggling.
Poolpaw grinned. "Thought so."
Poolpaw climbed up through the tree, sending half dead leaves showering down. The Great Rock looked like a pebble by the time they'd reached the highest branch that would support their weight.
"What do you think of the view?" Sunpaw mewed softly.
She felt like she could see all of the Clan territories from here. "Wow."
She looked and saw the twinkling stars in the night sky. They shouldn't be doing this.. "Do you think StarClan knows what we're doing?"
Sunpaw looked up with her. "They probably have more important things to worry about. But then again, there are a lot of cats up there in Silverpelt. So, maybe a cat from StarClan knows what we're doing."
Poolpaw looked at her in horror. More important things than cats who have broken the Warrior code!?
Poolpaw sighed, looking down at her black paws. "They must be angry with us for doing this."
Sunpaw turned to look at her. "They're a bunch of dead cats in the sky who have lived through whatever. They've probably seen, or done, a lot worse in their lifetimes." She mewed.
Poolpaw looked at her, not feeling convinced. "I guess your right. Let's go down," Poolpaw suggested.
Poolpaw sighed happily as she got down. She needed to tell Sunpaw. "Well, this has been fun."
Sunpaw smiled. "It has. But there's one more thing, follow me." Sunpaw turned straight towards the Great Rock and looked at Poolpaw from below. "C'mon, this'll be fun!" She purred.
Poolpaw wanted to scream at Sunpaw. IT'S NOT FUN IF IT'S BREAKING THE WARRIOR CODE!!!! She wanted to yell at her SO. BAD.
Poolpaw sighed as she climbed up the Great Rock. "What's so fun about this?"
Sunpaw purred excitedly, her tail swishing. "Just think about sitting up here, seeing all of those cats looking up at you with admiration, wouldn't it be wonderful? Also, cause breaking the rules is fun!"
Poolpaw shivered, wanting slap Sunpaw. "I hate breaking rules... Sunpaw, we shouldn't be doing this... We should only meet at Gatherings."
Sunpaw sighed. "I know, but.. I like talking to you. Why should we only see each other at Gatherings? Why can't we go hunting together? Just run around the forest? Have fun together?"
BECAUSE IT IS AGAINST THE WARRIOR CODE!
Poolpaw looked at her anger in eyes. "You may like breaking the rules, but I don't. If you really cared about me, you would respect my wishes."
Sunpaw sighed softly. "I do care about you, and I respect that that's what you want," Sunpaw smiled "I live for the freedom, but breaking the rules isn't for everyone, and I can't wait to see you again, if it has to be until the next gathering, then so be it I guess."
Sunpaw leaned in to nuzzle her gently. "May starclan keep you safe until we see each other next." She purred softly, her whiskers splaying.
Poolpaw nodded. "See you at the next Gathering."
Excitement surged through her as she ran into the bushes. I promise you StarClan, that I will never break the warrior code again! As she kept running into the woods, she glanced behind her and watched as Sunpaw left Fourtrees too.
I hope your consequences will come.. before you fall any further into the hole you've dug for yourself.
