The Gangs Family Videos
After everyone was gone to work, I immediately pulled out the box from under my bed again I was able to find a way to play the old films. There was a video of me Johnny and ponyboy at the park on the swings just sitting there, talking and laughing, and right, as I was wondering who was recording this, my mom's and dads voice played. It was a foggy morning in the fall with gold and red leave's everywhere in the front yard.
"Honey what are you recording?" My dad asked walking out onto the porch. She was sitting on the couch outside with a plaid colored blanket on her.
"The twins and Johnny across the street at the park" I heard her say so joyfully. You could see my dad walk past the camera handing my mom a cup of coffee.
"Well wheres the rest of the pack?" He said sitting down.
"Darry Give it back! It's my turn!" You then hear young Soda yelling. The camera then turned to Darry holding a football high in the air keeping it away from his little brother.
"And there goes the peace and silence" my dad sighs.
"You want it? Come and reach for it squirt!" He laughed.
"I'm telling mom!" Soda complained. Then you see Steve running up behind Soda out of breathe with a sweatshirt wrapped around his waist.
"Yea we're tellin mom!" Steve added
"Can we actually do that or will we get in trouble too?" Young Steve asked leaning in whispering to Soda.
"Ohhh what are you boys doing now?" My mom asked
"Mom Dar- Darry- he's um- he's he's-" Soda said trying to put his words together but did a horrible job doing so due to his lisp at the time.
"Soda hold on, catch your breathe first, you been running around like a wild child, now let's zoom into your pearly white teeth and see the missing one" my mom said trying to side track the tattle tailing.
Soda then started jumping up and down smiling pointing to his teeth.
"Yea yea see that one ma that one I lost eating an apple and the tooth fairy gave me a whole nickle!"
"Wow a nickle! What did you buy with it?" She asked acting like she had no idea.
"Gum, I can't- I can't chew the gum yet cause, because I have no teeth yet, but when they come back I get to chomp on as much fun as I want!"
My mom just starts giggling
"Yea if they come back!" Darry Laughs in the back throwing up the football.
"Darryyyy" my dad let out walking down the porch stairs to him.
"It'll come back!" Soda yelled turning around to Darry then slowly turning back around
"It will come back won't it mama?" Soda then asked looking back to my mom terrified. I couldn't help but laugh.
" yes it will" My mom laughed then Steve jumped
In front of the camera, pointing to another empty space in my brothers mouth saying
" yeah and And this tooth, this one right here, this one came out because of me!" Steve said proudly.
"Oh really?" my mom said suspiciously
" yeah because Soda and I were climbing the monkey bars and I slipped and fell and bumped into him so so then he slipped and fell and boom his tooth came out so I got him a new nickle!" Steve smiled also with a missing tooth. My mom didn't know to laugh or be concerned so she just nervously laughed.
"Hey mom! ...MA!" Darry yelled
"Jesus- QUITE HOLLERING! You weren't raised in barn what do you want!" She yelled back laughing now pointing the camera to him.
"Watch this!"
Darry was behind the front house gate as my dad was across the street. Darry was able to throw the football super far to him and my dad caught it and started cheering for him along with my mom.
"See that honey! Look at that! Zoom into that boys face! Darrel Curtis the next professional athlete! The next Biggest Quarterback for Football!" My dad yelled running across the street smushing Darry's checks once zoomed into the camera.
"Well let's see if he can even make Varsity in High School first" Dall said Cooly walking up to the fence. My dad just laughed looking back seeing Dally leaning on the fence.
"Hey you watch I'm gonna make Varsity Freshman year!" Darry said ever so confidently
"Not with that height you won't" Two bit said also showing up.
"Hey I'm barely in middle school! I may be 5'5 now but you watch I'm gonna be over 6 foot!"
And boy was he lucky cause dad was barely 5'10.
The camera then started zooming into Dallys face as he put a Cigarette into his mouth and I knew boy was he about to get in trouble
"Dallas Tucker Winston you got 2 seconds to get that cigarette out of your mouth!"
And immediately at the start of the sentence Dally jumped and dropped the cigarette out of his mouth but tried catching it with his hand and still dropped it on the floor.
"Aw come on Ma" Dall complained
"Don't Maaa me you know I hate those!" She scolded him as he rolled his eyes lookin grouchy
"I wasn't gonna light it" he mumbled putting the lighter back in his pocket.
"You weren't gonna light it?" My mom asked sarcastically. Now he was really in for it I thought laughing. She stood up and the camera was all over the place now.
"You weren't gonna light it- get in the house before I -" then the video stops with fear on Dallys face and behind him you see my dad walking us back from the park with me on his shoulders and him holding Ponyboy hand and Johnny on the other side of him. I just giggled
Then I put in another strip of film.
My dad was recording the video this time. It was my mom walking out of the kitchen with the lights off and a huge cake with sparklers on it.
"Happy Birthday Dear Twins, HappyBirthday dear Twins" they sang. That was our 9th birthday. The last Birthday we had with mom and dad. Pony and I were standing on chairs. Darry and Soda were sitting across from eachother Steve sat next to Soda and Two Bit next to Darry while Johnny and Dally stood next to Ponyboy and I as my mom put the cake down in front of us. We blew out the candles as everyone cheered. Dad came running up to us asking me
"Alright Sammy what did you wish for you?"
"I want a Pony!" I smiled
"Yea I asked for that on Christmas and instead they brought you guys home and named him Ponyboy" Soda complained smiling.
"Hey that's new true!...is it mom?"Pony said turning to my mom.
"Alright Ponyboy what did you wish for your birthday!" My dad interrupted.
"I want a turtle!" He smiled
"Great honey they want a Pony and a Turtle...you know maybe we should just move to a farm" my mom laughed taking out the candles. We all cheered loving the idea of having a bunch of pets that as kids we didn't realize we couldn't afford.
New film switched
"Sammy Johnny!" My mom called over as Pony Johnny and I were sitting on the bleachers messing around. We waved to the camera as we goofed off all dancing around. We were at Darry and Two bits football game that night watching the game. The camera then turned to my moms left where Dally was sitting.
"Dallyyyy" my mom smiled. Dally just side eyed the camera and awkwardly said
"Hiii"
"Aw come on Dall you don't want to play any sports? I'm sure we could figure out a way to get you on a team she said still pointing the camera to him
"No I hate sports what's so great about it? You throw a ball you catch a ball you run with the ball" he complained.
"You know that's not the only thing you can do, you tackle people, get aggressive"
"Really?!" Dally said excitedly
"Yea there's different kind of contact sports like wrestling and stuff"
"I'm not wearing a leotard"
"It's not a leotard..it was the required uniform" my dad, who was the coach at the time said walking over to us on the bleachers.
"Daddy!" I yelled running overs reaching for him between the bleacher gate.
"You wrestled didn't you?" Dall asked wanting to laugh
"Yes I did and I was damn good at it too" my dad smiled as you could see me in the video reaching hugging him.
"What about boxing!" Dallas said excitedly
"Honey I don't think a boxing ring would let you 10 feet near the building" my mom said concerned due to Dallys past of fighting.
"Dall why don't you do track?" Johnny asked with me clinging on to his leg being dragged.
Of course my mom giggled zooming into me with missing teeth 2 pig tails and a pink coat on.
"Me running? No, you will never catch me running" he said in a diva New York accent
"Yea unless it's you running from the cops again" Pony said leaning over
"Ponyboy" my mom warned
"It was one time let it die!" He said knowing my mom was still not happy about that
"Try 4" my dad yelled over from the side lines which made me giggle as my mom zoomed in on my dad winking at the camera.
"I'm going to get a snack" Dall said getting up
"Dall...hand them over" I heard my mom say as I took the camera and filmed them sitting on the bench
"I don't got them"
"Try again" she said raising an eye brow
"...fine"he said handing her 2 from his front pocket
"Ah ah" she said stopping him from walking away
"...ughhh" he said pulling out the pack from his jacket
"And the lighter" she smiled in a smart ass way which I loved and realized I got from her. He frowned and gave it to her.
"Don't worry Dall I got a surprise for you" she smiled reaching into her purse winking at the camera.
"Candy Cigarettes?" He asked
"So you still feel cool" she giggled
"Gee...thanks" he said with an attitude that made my mom laugh as he walked away.
"And that is how you put smart a Winston" my mom said smiling at the camera as she took it.
"Mom come on hes 13" Pony let out
"And he still should not be smoking none of you should!" My mom said as I pointed the camera to Johnny and Pony while Johnny made funny faces at the camera.
The camera cut out
Then went to New film
It was all of sleeping in a tent in the woods
"Honey" my mom said giggling
"What" he said laughing
"Do you remember having 8 kids?"
"Nope, that's not even having kids that having a littler" he laughed. The rest of the videos were of us at lakes or sports events or school plays or my mom filming us chasing eachother through out the house eventually the gang got home and we all just started watching them together with snacks and drinks. We were all laughing and I sometimes would catch one of the boys with their eyes watering a bit, realizing that that was our life but not anymore. My parents took them all in once they became our friends because they didn't have a family. As kids we didn't realize it we just thought our parents were so cool they let us have sleepovers whenever we wanted but it was really because the boys parents were either not home, drunks, or abusive. It wasn't that just 3 of us lost parents all 8 of us did some of us lost parents more then once unfortunately. Our parents really did become their parents but now we're all orphans. Orphans that just lost 2 brothers.
