Capter 4: A Business Meeting
Y/N's POV
Knock knock.
I rolled my sad self out of my comfortable bed to see who the hell was knocking on my door at 7:30. Whoever that was needed to sleep.
I dragged my body to the front door, tiredness sitting on my shoulders. A sigh escaped my lips as I creaked open the door to reveal a very giddy Hamilton.
"Alex?" I asked, blinking a few times. "What are you doing here at this ungodly hour?"
Alexander's excited expression melted into an annoyed one. "Y/N, it's 11:30."
Whoops. Guess I was too tired to read my grandfather clock properly.
"Sorry," I said.
Alex rolled his eyes. "Anyways," he continued, the giddiness coming back, "I'm having a business meeting with someone at 1:00. I was wondering if you would like to side my case to them."
I smiled. "I would love to!"
Hamilton smiled again. "Great! Be at my house at 12:30." (We exchanged addresses at the coffee shop; we didn't live far away from each other at all.)
I gave him a thumbs-up. "Got it."
He left and I closed the door. 'Time to get ready,' I thought to myself.
I wanted to look at least semi-presentable, so I threw on a f/c dress that went down to my shins and put my hair up in a ponytail, slipping into f/c flats. I also brushed my teeth.
When I was done brushing my teeth, I went to the mirror in my room to see how I looked.
Not bad.
I smoothed out the wrinkles in my dress as I continued to stare at myself.
I stole a glance at my grandfather clock.
12:15.
"Jesus, how long does it take me to get ready?" I said to myself. That's when I began to walk to Alex's humble abode.
***
I knocked on Alexander's door, wondering who he and I were going against.
The one and only opened the door, a big grin on his face. "Hey, Y/N! Come in, come in! Our opponent is already here!"
Curiosity biting at my flesh, I stepped inside.
To be honest, I was horrified at who I would be going against:
Thomas.
He was sitting on Hamilton's couch, staring at me. His eyes were wide and his mouth was slightly open.
After about fifteen seconds of Thomas silently staring at me, I put my hands up. "I swear, I did not know you were the one I was going against," I told Thomas.
He nodded slowly.
My head whipped around to Alex. "Alexander Hamilton, can I talk to you for a moment? In private?" I said through gritted teeth.
Alexander gulped, but nodded nevertheless.
I grabbed that boy by his coat and dragged him into the hallway where Thomas wouldn't here us.
"Why didn't you tell me I was going against Thomas?" I hissed at Hamilton.
"I didn't think that you would care!"
"Of course I would care! I don't want Thomas to see me siding with you instead of him! I want to impress this guy, not make him hate me!"
Alex sighed. "Fine. You can side with whoever you want. Just promise me that you will inwardly agree with me."
"I can't promise that."
Alexander laughed, followed by a knowing smirk. "So...I assume you have a crush on him then?"
"Well no freaking duh."
Then I dragged Alex back to the room where Thomas was supposed to be sitting.
Thomas' POV
Y/N pulled Hamilton to the side and began talking to him. All I could hear were mumbles, so I decided to get close to the wall so I could hear what they were saying.
I made sure my breathing was inaudible by covering my mouth with one hand, tuning my ears in after.
"So...I assume you have a crush on him then?" I heard Hamilton smugly ask.
I felt my heartbeat quicken. 'They couldn't be talking about me, could they? Because I do really like Y/N,' I thought to myself, anxiety building up in my chest.
"Well no freaking duh," Y/N's gorgeous voice responded.
I felt myself smile through my hand. I knew that there was a chance that she wasn't talking about me, but just knowing that there was a possibility that Y/N was talking about me made me extremely happy.
I heard footsteps leading back to the living room, so I started inwardly panicking. My first instinct was to sprint back to the couch and act like I wasn't spying on them, so that's what I did.
As soon as my butt touched the couch, Y/N and Hamilton walked in. They inquisitively looked at my flustered expression and red face.
"Thomas, are you okay?" Y/N asked, looking at my tomato-like appearance. "You look a little red."
She put a hand on my forehead, which made my face go even redder.
I had feelings for this girl; there was no way of hiding it.
She removed her hand from my forehead, looking confused. "Well, you don't feel warm. Are you okay?"
That's when I noticed how nice Y/N looked. My eyes moved up and down her body, taking in how well her dress hugged her gorgeous curves.
"Thomas?"
I snapped out of my trance to Y/N saying my name in a concerned tone. I realized what I did and mentally face-palmed. "Uh...I'm fine. Let's get down to business."
Y/N's POV
We all sat down on the couch; the meeting was about to begin.
"So, what are we even discussing?" I asked.
"We are discussing if slaves should be allowed or not," Alex replied, smoothing out the wrinkles in his emerald green coat.
I already knew what I would say to that: No. But I needed to know who thought what first.
"I, for one," Thomas began, raising his right hand, "think that slaves should be allowed. People are awfully busy these days, and slaves would be able to do all of the boring tasks that you don't have time for."
'What?' I thought, my facial expression morphing into pure terror. (Thomas and Alex were giving each other death glares, so they didn't see me.) 'Oh no. I wanna side with Thomas, but his cause is just plain pathetic.'
I looked over at Alex. "A-and I presume that you don't feel the same way?" I tried to recollect myself, which failed miserably.
He gave me an "omg you stupid" look and shook his head quickly. "Of course not!" he exclaimed. "We shouldn't treat other human beings this way! They wanna live their life, but are enslaved in a stranger's house!"
"Well, duh," Thomas scoffed, rolling his brown eyes. "That's why it's called slavery."
I surprised the urge to laugh, which made a snort type thing escape from my mouth.
Alex gave me the evil eye, while Thomas flashed me a gorgeous smile.
That's when I realized something: Thomas had a stupid cause that I didn't want to defend. He would hate me if I told him the truth, and poor, innocent people would be enslaved if I told him that it was a great idea. (The winning cause would present their issue to George Washington and see if he approved, and if he did, then the cause would become reality.)
Thomas smirked. "What do you think, Y/N?"
My heart beat quickened. What would I say? How would I say it?
I cleared my throat and stole a glance at Alex. I gave him a quick nod, signaling that I was siding with him.
A smug smile crossed his lips.
I exhaled and turned my head to Thomas. "Thomas..," I began, "I have chosen to support Alex on this one. I think having slaves is cruel to humans."
Thomas' face fell, and Alexander smiled.
"I'm sorry," I sadly apologized to Thomas.
Thomas' POV
"I'm sorry," Y/N said.
I couldn't believe this. She defended Hamilton. Not me. Hamilton.
So I basically started spouting out more reasons why I thought we should allow slavery, but Y/N just sadly smiled throughout it.
I gave in. "Whatever, you guys get your cause," I sighed, walking out the door. "The meeting is adjured."
It wasn't even a big deal, looking back on it. It was a stupid reason to avoid Y/N at all costs, but my emotions took over the rational part of my brain.
I was going to hide away from Y/N.
Y/N's POV
He left. He left me and Alex sitting there alone.
I suppressed the urge to cry, while Alexander watched. "You okay?" he finally asked for a bit.
"He left, Alexander. And with such a sad tone, too."
He was gone.
He would hate me.
I'd never see him again.
