Lute's pov

"You know you didn't have to walk me home" Adam muttered as we walked back to his house "I'm perfectly capable of finding my way home myself"

"Maybe I just wanted an excuse to spend more time with you" I said teasingly.

"Well that's stupid. We see plenty of each other at work" he said bluntly. I've learnt at this point not to take it personally. He doesn't mean to be rude. It's just the way he is.

"Well here we are" he reached his door. I nodded and was about to walk away when he called out to me "hey you wanna come inside for a moment? I have some beer if you're into that"

"Sounds wonderful" I smiled as I headed inside. His home was small but homely. Rock records and half naked women hung on the wall. I rolled my eyes fondly. This place screams I don't have a woman in my life!

"I'll be back in a minute" he headed into the kitchen. I decided to look around. I mean hey when's the next time I'm going to be invited into the chiefs house! Out of the corner of my eye I saw a photo frame face down in a box. Curious I picked it up to see a photo of Adam standing with a tall woman with blonde hair.

"Don't touch that!" Adam snatched it out of my hands.

"I'm sorry" I looked away guiltily.

"It's fine" he turned away sadly "I meant to throw this out anyway"

After a moment I gained the courage to speak "who is that woman?"

"She's my ex wife" he touched the photo frame, his eyes clouded with emotion "in the first year of our marriage she cheated on me with a close friend of mine"

"That's awful" I felt a tug in my chest. No wonder he was so awful when we met. I can understand him being defensive after going through something like that.

"I don't want to talk about it any more" he chucked the photo to the side "are we going to drink or what?"

"Sounds good to me" I took the beer with a smile. At least I can offer him a good distraction.
