4) I Was Born To Be a Tree
Waiting for James in sun seemed like a good idea at first. That was until I realized that it was still summer and my skin was turning a nice shade of pink.
Plus trying to read in direct sunlight is a risk I didn't want to take. The amount of times I have been blinded by the pure whiteness is shocking.
Finding a cool shady spot is almost impossible as the school cut down most of the trees. Apparently, they are a hazard because trees are unpredictable and can randomly fall at unexpected times.
A light tap on my shoulder breaks my concentration as I read over the script.
"You alive?" James asks sitting next to me on the silver bench "From a distance, you looked like you were zoned out. I was hoping you were asleep so I could scare you off the seat"
I go to playfully nudge him but as he weighs as much as a ton of brick he doesn't move "I'm too much of a ninja for you to sneak up on me" This is met with a sceptical look." And can you blame me for looking half dead when all I have is this reading material? No offence to Shakespeare but he needs to put a bit more action into his writing if he wants to keep my attention. Good old Romeo and Juliet are talking in pretty much the entire time. Why not liven it up with another location like by the pool or the circus. Everybody loves the circus!"
His hand reaches over to my bag to pull out a plastic container filled with fudge. I swear he has a sixth sense when it comes to the sugary confectionary.
James takes three cubes and places them in his mouth hastily. All I hear for the next couple minutes is moans and sweet words that are being spoken to the fudge.
It's a serious addiction that I should probably stop contributing to.
"Thanks for agreeing to help with this audition. I have no idea what I'm doing. I really hope that I don't pass out when I get on stage. That would do much for my non-existent reputation."
"Don't worry about it, you'll be absolutely fine as long as you don't stare into any of the audience's eyes, that's when you realise that you're being watched and you can't slip up." the words I was hoping that was going to be encouragement only makes me more nervous.
The subject is quickly changed as my face turns a shade paler "Did you get the script that I sent?"
"Yeah, it makes a lot more sense when it's not in Shakespearean. I'm fairly sure he made up a lot of the words" my eyes go back to lines I need to be memorising.
"I've always wondered what public schools look like"
"It's just a normal school. They all pretty much do the same thing as they drain the life and happiness out of you. On a side note have our terrible mustard coloured walls scarred you for life yet?"
Apparently, he doesn't mind the horrendous colouring of our buildings but then again he isn't the one that has to look at it every day.
He looks out of place as he takes in the new surroundings. The blazer he is wearing sits on him perfectly and hugs his defined torso. The sunlight that burns most people bounces off his perfectly swept back hair slowly.
Curiosity is quickly replaced by confusion as his eyes catch the top of the office roof.
Tilting his head sideways he stares at the roof like there's an abstract art in front of him. "Is that a-"
"Don't ask if you don't want to know the answer." Looking down at my watch I realise the time. I pull him away and towards the auditorium.
"Now I'm going to give you a warning Miss Shelby can be a bit ecstatic at times. And flamboyant and hypo and eccentric."
He shrugs "Please, my school is based around people who have huge egos and are willing to show off for no particular reason. I'll be right at home."
"You know Ms Darbus from High School Musical?" I ask "She's pretty much the same person except it's like she's always on a sugar high."
From the raised eyebrows I can that he is asking himself how he got into this situation.
The simple answer is because he loves me. The longer answer involves a contract and a lot of blackmail material.
"So what role are you going for? I hope it's a good one like the lead"
James, living in the spotlight all his life, has obviously never seen me in front of a crowd before. My aim is to be able to say I was on stage for longer than 10 minutes.
"Tree number two!"
I personally think I was born to play a tree. I'm short, stumpy and people walk into me all the time.
"Why not one?"
"One gets climbed on which is something I'd rather avoid"
As we open the doors to the auditorium I spot Raynes black high ponytail in the midst of the small crowd.
James somehow jumps over the seat without face planting and gives my friend a bright smile "What's up sunshine? Have you been keeping the rain away lately?"
Rayne just gives him a blank glare. He makes the same joke every time he sees her.
He continues, not fazed by her silence "What are doing here anyway? I wouldn't think this is your type of scene."
"Oh, it's defiantly not. I'm currently questioning why I let this person" She motions towards me with her head "drag me into what's going to be torture."
"It won't be that bad," I say hopefully, in attempt to stop her from leaving me.
Jacinta scoffs, taking her earphones out "Have you seen our theatre club? They're terrible and stink at acting. Let's not even get me started on their singing ability"
James winks at Jazz who just scoffs and gives him a curt nod.
"You brought Mr Theatre Nerd to auditions? Was that a wise decision? Do you really want to ruin his love for musicals in one sitting because it is very possible with-"
Loud trumpet sound plays through the speaker, cutting off Jacinta.
Everyone stops talking.
All the lights turn off in an instant leaving us in pitch black.
"What's happening?" James whispers to me looking slightly worried that I'm completely calm.
I wave off his concern "Shhh you're going to ruin her entrance"
"Her wh-" The back doors of the auditorium fly open and a gust of wind flows through bringing a thick cloud of smoke.
From amidst the smoke, a shadow appears and makes its way through the fog.
What emerges is a walking rainbow. In other words Miss Shelby.
With her brightly pink dyed hair and dress of many patterns, she makes her way down the centre aisle with a bounce in her step.
"Hello, my beautiful hummingbirds" she flourishes her hands in a way that I'm expecting glitter to start raining down on us.
My eyes start to hurt from all the colour and action that is happening in one piece of clothing.
"It is so good to see everybody again and even a few new faces" her gaze drifts over the small gathering. "I know you look forward to this production every year and I am certain that this year will be the best year ever!"
There are a couple of cheers and awkward claps of agreement from the student.
"I have been pondering over different plays and I decided on a classic. Romeo and Juliet. It will challenge you and let you learn a language that is now lost. I am aware you may be new to this type of dialogue so I will be lenient on everyone as they take the stage. Remember. There is no such thing as wrong in theatre. Only improvisation."
Apparently, her speech was so inspiring that it deserves a standing ovation from the front row.
Rayne leans over and says in a hushed tone "I think we should warn Miss that he mesmerised half of Shakespeares plays by 16"
"13 actually" James adds
"Show off" she mumbles under her breath.
James unexpectedly stands up from his seat and starts talking before I can stop him "Um excuse me, Miss Shelby was it?"
"Yes," she adjusts the large glasses that she doesn't really need but only wears to make her look smarter.
"I don't mean to intrude or criticise your choice but I think that Romeo and Juliet is very middle school. Something more mature would suit this school and age bracket better."
I slowly sink down in my seat. Trying to avoid all the stares that are pointed our way because of his comment.
Nobody has ever tried to correct Miss Shelby out of pure fear. It was once rumoured someone tried to rewrite her script and he never came back
to school again.
Her laser gaze zones in on my best friend. He is most definitely dead. "I don't know what you're talking about young man. You obviously have no experience in the theatre. What is your name again? I don't think I ever had you in my class or seen you around the school"
"James Viarella from Surrey North School of Dramatic Arts" I swear I see his teeth shine in the light.
"Oh really? I know a teacher from there. We were best of friends back in our university days. Did our major together? She must have mentioned me a couple times to you ."
He shrugs "Sorry no."
She is taken back for a second but quickly moves on to the auditions.
To say our school has little talent is an understatement.
We have none.
It is painful to watch people stutter over their words and sing out of key.
Why did I agree to do this again?
All that James can do is muter things to himself about how he could be doing a better job then everybody combined. He isn't wrong. He could probably play every character in a one-man show and be better.
When my name is called my stomach drops. I am not ready.
All my friends do is give me a thumbs up. That's moral support for you.
James follows me on stage and basks in the spotlight "We would like to show our own rendition of the classic love story turned modern"
Miss Shelby nods quickly before looking back down at her clipboard that has nothing written down on it.
"Is it normal to feel like puking over the entire audience?"
The smile that comes to his face settles my stomach slightly "Yep. I promise you'll be great" he gives my shoulder a light squeeze "just follow my lead"
He takes a deep breath before speaking "I trust your words. Just call me your love, and I will take a new name. From now on I will never be Romeo again."
He nods. Oh, that's my cue "Who are you? Why do you hide in the darkness and listen to my private thoughts?" projecting my voice is harder than I thought it would be.
"I don't know how to tell you who I am by telling you a name. I hate my name, dear saint because my name is your enemy. If I had it written down, I would tear up the paper."
"I haven't heard you say a hundred words yet, but I recognize the sound of your voice. Aren't you Romeo? And aren't you a Montague?" I say with more confidence.
He dramatically puts his heart over his heart "I am neither of those things if you dislike them."
It's hard to contain my smile "Tell me, how did you get in here? And why did you come? The orchard walls are high, and it's hard to climb over them. If any of my relatives find you here they'll kill you because of who you are." I flick my hair look over my shoulder dramatically. Might as well have some fun with it.
"I flew over these walls with the light wings of love. Stone walls can't keep love out. Whatever a man in love can possibly do, his love will make him try to do it. Therefore your relatives are no obstacle." James takes my hand as he kneels
If they see you-" I'm just getting into the flow when I am cut off
"THAT" Miss stands up and points her finger towards us "was the best Romeo performances I've seen in my entire career. Ladies and gentleman, we have our Prince"
The theatre group stand up at the announcement in shock.
"But he doesn't even go to our school" someone yells
"Have you seen the other choices" Jacinta defends miss's choice.
"The story doesn't have a prince so therefore he isn't in the play" Hayden, also known as the biggest attention seeker trying to correct our mistake.
"NONO. I have made an executive decision that for the benefit of the show we will be changing the script and the lead male role is going to James"
Somebody in the crowd hoots in excitement but is quickly shut down by their friend.
Hayden now approaches the stage. "But miss I've already memorized the script and have had my costume custom made"
"That may be true but I don't think this lead role for James is right for him. I want something better suited. Like Cinderella but a modern version. Like in the 70.Oh and Cinderella leaves her walkman and they're in a dancing comp. Oh, there are so many ideas. I must write them down immediately."
"That's the plot for the cinderella mobile with Selena Gomez right" James questions besides me.
"Let her have her moment"
She doesn't have many.

Jacinta and I watch from afar the small crowd that has found its way around James.
"Looks like he's already got a fan club. I'm surprised they haven't printed his face on shirts yet" we lean against my car eating doughnuts holes.
"Just you wait. Tomorrow there will be t-shirts, mugs and an entire website dedicated to him" I wave in his direction to try to get his attention away from the girls that have attached themselves to him.
He smiles brightly back at me. The girls part as he makes his way in our direction.
"You need a lift home?" I throw a doughnut in his direction. He somehow catches it in his mouth with ease.
"Nah it's all good Mark is picking me up. Game night" the wicked grin that spread across his friend tells me more than I need to know about what's happening tonight.
If on cue a black ute pulls up next to us.
The dark windows is wound down by a dark-haired devil. "Whats up shortcake?"
"Not much" I lean against car and smirk.
"Having the boys around tonight? Planning to cause any trouble?"
Mark can only throw his head back in laughter "You know it. I would have invited you but-"
"I'm too good at all the games and you're scared you're going to lose against me. Again"
James gives me a quick hug before jumping in the front seat next to his friend. "Tell everyone I say hi and hope they can beat my high score"
The boys just shake their heads "Now we all know that's not going to happen."
"We can give them hope" I wink before they drive away.
After they've left Jazz and I are still looking out at the road.
"Which game did you leave a high score on?"
I smile thinking back to my moment of glory "All of them"
