4. She's Everywhere
Oliver
"BEEP! BEEP! BEE-"
I slammed my alarm and groaned. I opened my eyes to check the time.
5:45 am.
Yeah, it's that time of year again. The one that's lasts for 10 months. Everyone's favorite.
School.
Maybe just 5 more minutes...
"BEEP! BEE-" Okay, I'm up.
I hopped into the shower, the warm water raining onto my face and body. I wish I could stay like this forever.
"Ollie, hurry up!" Cassie banged on the door.
Forever ended.
I turned of my shower and wrapped a towel around my waist.
"Nah, I still have to shave. Gonna take a while." I swiped the foggy mirror to look at my nonexistent beard. I smirked.
"Oliver, I'm gonna fucking kill y-" I opened the door and smiled innocently. She glared at me in return.
I looked closely at her. "Woah! What happened to your um, everywhere?" She looked like a total mess, especially her hair.
She shoved right passed me. "I hate you."
"Love you too, sis." She slammed the door. Trolling her is so funny.
I put on my clothes and headed downstairs. I grabbed the protein shake from the fridge and went to get my backpack.
I stopped when I saw my mom sleeping on the couch, snoring loudly. A bunch of paper work was on the floor and table. I sighed.
I picked up the papers and threw a blanket over her. I crouched down to her lying state.
"Bye, mom." I whispered and kissed her on the forehead.
This was sometimes the only time I see her, because of her busy schedule. But one day, our family will be back to normal. I just know it.
I grabbed my bag and waited in the car for Cassie.
5 minutes went by. Then 10. After that, I lost count.
I checked my watch. 6:45 am. C'mon Cass.
A whole year later, she came running to the car.
"If I walked to school, I would've been there by now." She threw her stuff in the back, her things hitting me in the process.
She started the car and drove off to the road.
"The school is like 7 miles from here."
"I could run."
She rolled her eyes. "Just be thankful I am sweet enough to take you. Not all of us have cars." That was clearly pointing to me.
We only have two cars, mom's and Cassie's. Originally, we were supposed to be sharing it, but every time I wanted to go somewhere, it was always gone. Thanks sis.
"I'm saving up for one though. A nice, cheap car that can last me until college."
"With what money?"
"From...Cheesy Chester's."
She snorted. "The only thing you're going to earn from that job are tips from people, delivering that trash ass pizza. It's gonna take you a while until you can afford a car."
"Hey, at least it's something. And a start! I'll try to find some mini jobs also. And what do you mean, trash ass? They have one of the best pizzas in town!"
"Okay, whatever makes you sleep at night."
"It does, actually."
"Just make sure you put some of your pizza money into the family jar, okay?"
The family jar is basically where we keep our emergency money. Just in case we ran out of money to buy something important, like food, that's the jar we go to.
"Always."
Traffic started to build up from the school.
"Shit." Cassie muttered.
A car was moving slow. She honked at it.
"Move you fucking slow poke!" The guy flipped her off outside his car window. I laughed.
"Maybe you should calm down, Cass. Road rage is not good for your health."
"Shut up."
"I won't."
She groaned. "I can't wait until your pizza money gets you a car."
"Me too." She pulled up into the school and parked. She turned off the car and we got out.
"Cassie! Over here!"
Lila yelled her over, standing next to Nat over the crowd of people.
"See ya, Ollie." She ran over to them.
I grabbed my bag and headed towards the school.
"Did you guys see Nat Carter on Vixen? She looked so hot!"
"I heard she went out with Roman Antonio. Total hottie."
"I know, right? I will let him speak Spanish to me all day in my ear."
I cringed as I went by people. Shouldn't they be worried about their own lives?
"Yo, Prescott!" Ricky greeted me and dapped me up.
"What's up, man! How's summer school?"
"Don't get me started. And now, my dad is all on my ass this year because of SATs and shit. Like all of a sudden he cares about what I do."
Can't relate.
We got inside.
"What's up motherfuckers!" My even louder friend, Wes shouted, coming up to us.
Ricky rolled his eyes. "Can't you be any louder?"
"Yeah, I can. See? WA-"
I waved my hands in the air. "Okay, okay! We get it. You're loud."
Cassie and her friends walked inside. People started to stare at them, in awe and admiration. I shook my head at their nonsense.
"Yo, Cassie looks so good today. I mean, damn."
I raised a finger. "Hold up, that's my sister. Calm down."
Ricky scoffed."No wonder why girls don't come begging on their knees, asking you to fuck them." Wes stopped his tracks.
"What about you, Derantis, oh wait, you couldn't cause you had to save yourself from doing sophomore year again!"
"Well at least I care about my grades than how girls fucking look!"
"Yeah, bullshit! I know you..."
Junior year is gonna be something.
-
The day has been boring so far.
Teachers talking about college, how scores are important, all that fun stuff.
I walked into 5th period. It was AP Lit, and a class full of seniors.
There were some seats remaining. I took the one next to the window.
The class started to get louder as more people came inside.
I turned to see what the fuss is about. I rolled my eyes.
Of course. Nat is in my class. She is everywhere.
She took the seat across the room, talking to a group of guys.
"Maybe after school, you can come over to my place. I make a mean sandwich." One of the football players asked, trying to get her to sleep with him.
"I'm sure you do, Sean, but I can't. I'm busy."
The teacher went to the front of the class.
"Hello, class. My name is Mr. Lato, and I teach AP Literature here at this school. Here are the syllabus." He passed them around the class.
He started explaining the curriculum of the class. He looks young, like around his 30s.
"Today, we're going to do an icebreaker." The class groaned. "Yeah, I know it's middle school, but we're gonna do a lot of group activities during the year. So why not learn something about each other?"
He leaned his hands on the desk. "Your name, your grade, and a fun fact about you. Starting with you, go." He pointed to a girl with blonde hair and glasses.
The class shared their info about themselves. Then it was Nat's turn.
"Hey, my name is Nat, I'm a senior, and um...I can knot a cherry stem with my tongue." The boys wolf whistled as she smirked and sat back down in her seat.
Before I knew it, it was my turn. I got up and faced the class. "I'm Oliver, I'm a junior, and I play 3 instruments."
Mr. Lato gaze brightened. "What instruments?"
"Guitar, drums, and piano."
Sean went last. "Wassup, I'm Sean. Senior and uhh, I can move my eyes in different directions." He started to do his thing and the class was amazed and cheered.
Wow, they are really fascinated by that, huh?
By the time we finished, the bell rang.
"Make sure you guys buy Of Mice And Men by next Tuesday! That will be our first reading of the year!" His voice faded as I left the class.
Cassie was walking with some tall guy. As soon as she saw me, she ran over to me.
"Woah, someone had too much cocaine in their cereal." She gave me a dead look.
"Kidding. What's up?"
"Principal Faller wants to talk with you today, after school."
"Me? Why?" She shrugged.
"Wait, how do you know all of this?"
"I was getting my schedule from the front and he came out of his office. He was going somewhere, I think. He saw me and we had a pretty decent convo-Cass, the point?" I stopped her before she went on. I didn't want be here all day.
"Yeah, he just asked to talk to you. That's all."
"No catch?"
"Not that I know of." There's always a catch.
She started to walk slowly backwards.
"Well, alright. Office it is. Don't leave me by myself at school. Again."
"No promises." She turned around and left.
6th and 7th period went by like a breeze. But I was too busy thinking about the principal.
What does he want? Am I in trouble? Shit, did he find out I wrote penis on the wall freshman year?
So many questions. Not many answers.
The dismissal bell rang and I went straight to the office. I went up to the lady.
"How can I help you?" She was about 60, has curly hair, and a sweet grandma vibe to her.
"Principal Faller wanted to speak with me."
"Okay, sit over by the chairs in front of his door. Have a nice day!" I took a lollipop from the counter and sat down.
Cherry flavored. Yes, my favorite.
I checked my phone to see if there was any new info. Nothing.
A guy with dark clothes and long hair came out with a guy, presumingly his dad. He gave me a 'what the hell you staring for' look and walked right pass me.
The principal looked around until he saw my face. He smiled. "Oliver, come on in."
I went in and sat in one of his fancy chairs. His office was nice, like a mini bookstore in one room.
He sat on the other side of the desk.
"How are you, son? Liking the first day of school?"
"I'm good, sir. And it's going fine."
"Junior year! The most important year. With all the tests and stuff." Wow, I couldn't tell.
"Yup. Is this conversation going anywhere, sir?"
"Oh, right! Yes, um, you're probably wondering why you are here." He read my mind, congrats.
"So, you and a few students were picked as this year's nominees for the annual Lakefront's Scholar." My eyes widened.
Lakefront's Scholar is an award that goes on our transcript and a lot of colleges look into it. Many people who have won it previous years went to Yale, MIT, UCLA, you name it. So this was a pretty big deal.
I widely grinned and shook his hand profusely. "Thank you so much, sir! It is truly an honor!"
"You know, there's a requirement you have to do. Like community service and SAT and ACT scores."
"Yeah?" I sense a but.
"You will become a tutor also. Help students with subjects they are struggling on. You'll be with them for the whole school year."
"Okay, so what's the problem?"
Principal Faller scratched his chin. "You will be automatically assigned to a student to tutor. We did this so you can have someone that you don't normally talk to. Actually, it has already been assigned."
"How, it's only the first day of school!"
"I know, I know. But some parents want to get the best of students for their kids early."
Too early.
"When does the tutoring start?"
"Next week."
Next week? We learn jack shit in a week.
He continued on. "...Her father really wants her to do well on her exams before she goes to college, and also good grades in general. I think her dad might heard of you. That's probably why he chose you..."
Okay, I can deal with this. If this is what it takes to get the Lakefront's Scholar, I'm all game.
"Who is it?"
"Have you heard of a girl named Natasha Carter?"
Okay, I lied. There's that catch.
"Yes, yes I have."

A/N
Well there it is! The start of a big story. No, huge!
As you could tell, Oliver is not Nat's biggest fan. At all. Do you guys wanna guess reasons why?
Also, what do you think about his and Cassie's morning routine. That is what they usually do everyday.
See? As promised, I updated on a weekend. I'm doing great, sweaty.
This start to get interesting from here, so hold on to your phone!
