Prologue
"Don't go, Sayuri! I'll miss you so much!"
I sighed and turned around to gather the young girl in my arms. Janessa had been traveling with me and he-who-will-not-be-mentioned for nearly eight months. She had just started on her pokemon journey in Unova and we had become friends after we had unexpectedly become roommates in a pokemon center. I loved Janessa like a little sister. She was a sweet girl, but I didn't want to have anything that reminded me of the jerk that broke my heart. All I wanted was a fresh start: a new place, new pokemon, new friends, and a new goal to actually compete in a pokemon league.
"I'll miss you too, Janessa. You'll be fine though. Roger and Ethan were practically begging for you to go on a journey with them after all, you should use this as a chance to branch out and make new friends!" I encouraged her, trying my best to sound positive. Janessa sniffled miserably but nodded her head in silent agreement. I gave her one final hug before gently easing myself out of her arms and turning towards the security check at the airport.
Janessa waved to me until I had to turn in my ticket. When I glanced over my shoulder, I saw her walking away sadly with slumped shoulders. I couldn't help but feel a little guilty when a rush of relief went through me. Truly I would miss Janessa, but I was ready for a change. I was ready to see what I could really do as a serious trainer.
* * * * * *
Ten extremely long hours later I walked out of the airport to the smell of a crisp ocean breeze. My mind instantly went to the many water-type pokemon that I could potentially meet in this new area, which of course led me to think of all of the other pokemon that could only be found in the Galar Region that I could catch and make a part of my team.
This is good. Just keep moving forward and don't even think about that jerk that cheated on you, I told myself firmly as I walked purposefully towards the grand city of Motostoke and all of the new experiences that awaited me. Although it only took one chilling breeze to make me redirect my gaze towards a clothing store where I could buy a jacket and some jeans.
As I perused the selection of jackets at the boutique I had chosen to visit, I was distracted by a super cute travel backpack. Walking swiftly to look at it closer, I didn't have time to react when a guy with green hair stepped out of an aisle and directly into my path. I crashed into him, banging my nose on his shoulder before stumbling back a step and rubbing my poor sniffer.
"Wow, your excitement is flattering, but try to be more careful. I always have time for a fan," the guy said while reaching up and flicking his fringe with one of his thumbs in a gesture that seemed oddly familiar. He smiled in an "I know I'm great" kind of way that immediately made me think of my last boyfriend and I could feel my entire body stiffening.
"I don't know what you're talking about. You're the one who got in my way in the first place. Please excuse me," I replied with a huff while moving to walk around the annoying guy and get to the backpack I had noticed before.
"Huh? You really don't know me?" I leveled a glare at him to tell him to stop being so arrogant, but I blinked when I suddenly realized that I DID know this guy.
"Wait... are you Drew Hayden?" I asked, not quite believing it myself. After I had given up becoming Kalos Queen I had tried being a coordinator and it was rare to find a female coordinator in Hoenn who wasn't completely gaga for this guy in front of me. His green hair fell perfectly around his face looking naturally tousled, although I had no doubt it was chock full of product. His green eyes that matched his hair color were actually quite dazzling and I could see a smugness in them when I said his name.
"That's right. I knew you'd recognize me," he said, once again flipping the fringe of his hair with his thumb and I rolled my eyes. There was once a time when I had been a young girl and found him attractive, but I had been burned by a playboy before. No way was I going down that path again.
"Whatever. Excuse me," I said, trying my best to be polite even as I was battling the terrible memories of my last boyfriend.
I dodged past him and walked over to the backpack I had spotted, smiling widely when I took it down and saw it was exactly my style, a little over the top with its neon purple accent color, but still streamlined and sporty. Nodding to myself I turned then jumped back in surprise, knocking my head against the wall in my haste and earning me a large goose egg.
"Yikes, are you okay?" Drew asked, walking closer with one hand over his mouth which was obviously trying to cover his pent-up laughter.
"I'm fine. Why are you following me?" I asked, irritated now that both my head and nose were hurting. I just wanted to find a jacket and some jeans and get out of here.
"Well, you know my name, so it'd be rude if I didn't ask for yours," Drew announced gallantly, slipping one hand into the pocket of his faded denim jeans and I couldn't help but frown slightly.
"I'm just a random stranger. Go enjoy your shopping trip," I deflected with a wave of my hand towards the men's section of the boutique. Drew seemed unfazed by my unfriendly attitude though and followed me as I made my way back to the women's jacket area.
"Random stranger is a weird name. Can I call you Rando?" Drew asked with a teasing smirk and I glared over at him.
"NO. You may not," I stated with a huff and shoved aside a pale grey jacket a little harder than necessary. I flinched when something from the corner of my eye moved and turned to see a dark purple jacket with decorative pockets on the sleeves being held up in front of me.
"This is the one," Drew said with an arrogant grin.
I bit my tongue to stop myself from immediately dismissing his choice. To be honest, it was exactly what I had been looking for, and somehow he had even chosen one of my favorite colors. Glaring angrily at Drew I reached out and snatched the jacket from him before turning and making my way to the jeans section.
"So feisty. What brought you to the Galar Region, Rando? They don't have contests here after all," Drew's voice spoke up from behind me, signaling that he was STILL following after me.
Dang it, why won't this guy take a hint? I growled inwardly. Heaving a sigh, I decided that maybe if I acknowledged him a bit his ego would be satisfied and he'd leave me alone already.
"I'm not a coordinator anymore. I'm here to participate in the Galar League if I can get endorsed," I said over my shoulder. I clucked my tongue against the roof of my mouth as I surveyed the selection of jeans, not finding the style I liked.
"Not a skinny jean kind of girl, huh?" I could feel a whisper of breath against my cheek and jerked away from Drew. When I turned around I could see amusement dancing in his eyes and I had to restrain myself from yelling at him.
He's just enjoying your reactions, Sayuri. Take a breath and focus, girl.
"Don't you have somewhere else to be?" I asked exasperatedly, moving over to look at some jeans that weren't quite so form-fitting.
"No. I'm on vacation. I have absolutely nothing but free time," he replied with a devilish grin and I didn't bother to hide my sigh.
"Lucky me," I muttered as I held up a pair of jeans against me to check their length. I wasn't a particularly short girl, but I was shorter than average and it was the most annoying thing in the world to trip over pant legs that were cut too long.
I jumped in shock when a masculine hand reached out and took the jeans from me, folding them up expertly and replacing them on the pile I had taken them from.
"Those are too light for the jacket. Go for a darker wash like this one," Drew instructed with a cheerful smile while handing me a different pair of jeans that were nearly black in color but had a slightly faded streak down the middle of the legs. I was thoroughly annoyed at this point to have a guy I had just met picking out clothes for me, but the jeans were my size and looked comfy enough so I snatched them from him and turned towards the cashier without comment.
"You're not even going to let me see you try them on?" Drew asked teasingly as he once again followed behind me with a cocky grin on his face.
"Do you get a kick out of tormenting innocent bystanders?" I asked dryly while placing my new clothes and backpack onto the cashier's countertop. When she didn't immediately move to scan them, I looked up to see her attention was riveted on the attractive man behind me and I could almost see her inwardly drooling. He flashed her a wink and she blushed furiously, looking down and finally starting to ring up my purchase.
"Most girls wouldn't find my company a burden," Drew said with another flick of his fringe and I could almost see him pouring on the charm. I just rolled my eyes though and reached for my wallet. My mouth dropped open in shock when Drew smoothly stretched his arm past me and handed the cashier a shiny credit card.
"It's on me," Drew told the cashier and she actually squealed slightly before taking his card with stars in her eyes.
"Hey! What are you doing? Don't use that," I snarled, reaching towards the cashier to snatch the card away, but Drew grabbed my hand and pulled it back as the cashier swiped it through her machine. He grinned down at me as I whipped my hand out of his and he took the credit card back from the starstruck cashier.
"Think of it as an apology for butting in on your shopping trip," Drew said smoothly. I let out a harrumph, but the charge had already gone through so I took the bag the girl extended towards me and stalked away, now in a terrible mood. To make things worse, Drew followed after me in my retreat to the exit and I looked over at him exasperatedly.
"What do you want now?" A thank you?" I asked, feeling slightly exhausted from this unexpected and unwanted encounter. Drew tucked his hands into his pockets and shrugged, giving me a silly grin as his expression turned almost shy.
"Do I really have to keep calling you Rando?" I blinked a few times, trying to reconcile this suddenly cute expression with the arrogant guy I had just been dealing with, and willed my heart not to beat faster.
"Sayuri." It was out of my mouth before I even realized it and I quickly turned away, wanting to get as far away from that disarming expression as I could.
"I hope I'll see you around, Sayuri!" Drew called out. I glanced over my shoulder warily, but it looked like he was finally letting me go, so I quickly turned around and hurried away.
* * * * *
A few hours later after changing into my new clothes, which were annoyingly cute, and packing up some essentials for my journey, I turned my sights to the train station. I wasn't sure how I was going to get an endorsement to allow me to join the Galar League, but while I figured it out I could at least start catching some new pokemon.
I had stopped to reference a large map posted of the city to see which way I needed to go when a group of people sprinted past me. My eyes followed them, naturally curious about what the hubbub was about when another group of people whizzed by.
"...can't believe someone actually challenged Raihan to a battle!"
"Right? Whoever the sorry sap is they're in for a rude awakening!"
"Come on! We're going to miss it!"
My curiosity peaked, I jogged after the group of fans while trying to figure out why the name Raihan seemed so familiar. More fans of Raihan streamed through the city and made their way towards a huge staircase that opened up onto a massive wilderness. My mouth dropped open in awe and I was momentarily distracted by the wonderful, natural landscape stretched out before me. A terrifying clap of thunder rang out though, pulling me out of my reverie and my attention went to the left where an unnatural thunderstorm seemed to have been created to cover what looked to be the average size of a pokemon battlefield.
Rain Dance, huh? Cool, I thought to myself before following the crowd and rushing to watch whatever was going on.
When I finally managed to squeeze my way through the crowd to a spot where I could see what was going on, I could feel my eyes bulging from surprise and excitement. In front of me was a Goodra and a massive Electivire who were both looking decidedly exhausted. Their trainers couldn't have been more different. The young man standing behind the Electivire had shaggy purple hair that was plastered to his cheeks from the raindrops and his dark eyes were burning with an intensity that was more intimidating than his Electivire's size. He seemed to be an average height for a guy, maybe slightly above average, and his rain-soaked jacket was stuck to his well-proportioned body. He didn't seem at all concerned by the crowd of people watching their battle and appeared to only be focusing on the battle in front of him.
His opponent, however, was lapping up the attention of the crowd. Not to say he wasn't paying attention to the battle though. I was amazed at how confident both trainers were as their pokemon battled each other without signs of giving up. Goodra's trainer was MASSIVE! He looked like he was the same height as his Goodra which most Goodra grew to be 6'7"! He had dark skin and was wearing a hoodie that was designed to look like a dragon's teeth were jutting out from it. After calling out a move for his Goodra the guy struck a pose and I saw a Rotom phone whizzing by to take a selfie of him. As the Rotom phone snapped the picture, it finally clicked who this guy was.
He was THE Raihan. The last and strongest gym leader of the Galar League! When I had done some research on Galar there had been dozens of websites and links that led to his social media account. The guy had seemed like a showboat from his pictures, but I couldn't help but be impressed with how well he was battling the other trainer.
I had been so busy watching the trainers that I missed the finishing move and suddenly the battle was over with Raihan being the victor. Although his Goodra looked like it was on its last breath. The rain clouds dispersed at the end of the battle and I could see the frustration in the purple-haired trainer's eyes. He returned his pokemon worldlessly though and began walking towards the open space of wilderness in front of me.
"Woah, wait up!" Raihan called out, jogging over to the trainer who turned and regarded him with an appraising look.
"What?" the guy snapped from over his shoulder.
I was surprised at how deep the guy's voice was and I felt my cheeks heat up slightly in an uncontrollable blush.
Sheesh, Sayuri. Would you stop being such a voice-con? That's what got me in trouble in the first place with my idiot ex, I scolded myself firmly and watched the exchange with interest.
"That was the best battle I've had since I last challenged Leon. What do you say about joining the Galar League so we can battle again? Officially this time." The purple-haired guy regarded Raihan with narrowed eyes but then let a self-satisfied smirk cross his features and he cocked one eyebrow up in a silent challenge.
"I'll warn you; I've never lost to the same person twice," the guy stated with obvious confidence and Raihan laughed, pulling out a card from his hoodie.
"I'll take that risk. I'll be waiting for you in Hammerlocke," Raihan said with a grin that almost appeared wolfish as his dark eyes blazed with competitive fire. "What's your name, kid?"
The purple-haired man scowled and snatched the card out of Raihan's hand, which reminded me of how I had acted with Drew just earlier today. "It's Paul. And don't call me kid just cause you're a little taller than me," he growled with obvious annoyance, but Raihan just laughed.
"Don't sweat the small stuff. I look forward to our future battle," Raihan said, holding out a hand that was still dripping with water out to him. Paul regarded the proffered hand for a moment before reluctantly shaking it, and then turned away without another word, pocketing the endorsement he had received from Raihan and leaving the crowd behind.
I stumbled forward as the people around me surged forward, congratulating Raihan on his victory and requesting to take pictures with the gym leader. He jovially accepted the praise and seemed more than willing to take as many pictures as was requested of him. I watched the strange scene with an odd smile, finding myself wishing I could be that outgoing. Maybe if I had a personality like that I could've actually made it as Kalos Queen.
Shaking my head at my silly thoughts, I turned away from the crowd and began the long walk back up the staircase to Motostoke. As much as the expanse of wild area thrilled my sense of adventure, I wanted to start my journey near Turffield so as soon as I was endorsed I could challenge the first gym. So I left behind the wild area with a promise to explore it fully later as I made my way back to the train station.
* * * * * *
Finally settled onto the train that would take me to Turffield, I stretched my arms up above me and let out a relaxed sigh. This is the life. No responsibilities. No worrying about what I look like. Just me, my thoughts, and the open road. I glanced outside at the grassy fields whizzing past me and chuckled to myself. Well, kind of an open road.
My chuckles at my own silliness cut off abruptly when a small tap alerted me that I was no longer alone. Glancing up, I saw a tall man wearing a black shirt with an open collar showing off a purple gemstone necklace resting against his collarbone. His chestnut hair stood up in bold, in-your-face spikes that I found somewhat attractive and his green eyes sparkled with polite caution as he gestured to the seat across from me.
"Do you mind?" he asked and I quickly shook my head. The guy smiled and nodded his head in appreciation before sitting and taking out a large tablet which he immediately began tapping.
My curiosity was aroused as I wondered what he could be doing over there, but I tried my best to bite my tongue and looked out the window once more. The whole point of this trip was to prove that I was a good enough trainer to make it to the regional league championship. I didn't need to distract myself with attractive boys.
"What brings you to the Galar Region?" I blinked in surprise and looked over at the guy sitting across from me, who hadn't raised his head from his tablet. When I didn't respond right away though, he looked up and gave me a friendly smile.
"How do you know I'm not from here?" I asked cautiously, glancing around at the busy train and its passengers to see what would have singled me out as a tourist. A small chuckle pulled me from my thoughts and I looked over to see the guy cocking one eyebrow up with amusement.
"You really don't remember me, do you, Sayuri?" I blinked rapidly at this unexpected twist and narrowed my eyes, studying the handsome guy in front of me. After several minutes of wracking my brain though, I came up with nothing and awkwardly bowed my head.
"I'm really sorry, but I don't... how do we know each other?"
The guy laughed good-naturedly and waved his hand as if to dismiss my awkwardness. "It's fine. I'm not surprised you forgot. We met when I was giving a tour of the fossil restoration facility I was interning at back in Sinnoh. You were with a group of breeders coming to check out the fossil pokemon."
I gasped as everything finally clicked and a memory of a lanky kid with spiky hair came to my mind.
"Gary! Professor Oak's grandson, right?" I asked and Gary grinned.
"That's right. So, what brings you to Galar?"
I shrugged a little awkwardly and tried to smile at him. He had filled out a bit now that he was older. If I remembered correctly he was at least two or three years older than me, and his facial features looked a lot more mature. It was no wonder I hadn't recognized him when I had met him apparently in his awkward teenage phase.
"Giving the pokemon back to their trainers was a little too hard on me, so I decided that I would try being a trainer again instead of continuing down the Breeder path. There are a few pokemon that are native to Galar that I really wanted to try training so I came here," I explained, which was half-true. Originally I had been torn between Unova and Galar when I had decided to hang up my breeder's cap, but Unova hadn't worked out so great for me, so Galar had been my natural choice to escape to.
"I understand that. I just got here myself a few months ago because I wanted to study Dynamaxing. Professor Magnolia took me on as an assistant of sorts but she's really laid back so I'm pretty much just traveling as I please gathering the information I was looking for," Gary said with a half-grin that I was sure could make the heart of almost any woman melt.
There had been a rumor in the breeder's group I had gone with to the restoration facility that Gary had been quite the casanova when he was younger, but he had never made a move on any of us and he didn't give off a flirty vibe as Drew had. I felt comfortable around him, surprisingly. And it had been a long time since I had felt comfortable around a guy.
"What pokemon are you hoping to catch?" Gary asked, pulling me from my slightly embarrassing thoughts and I tried my best not to blush.
"I'd love to raise a Hattena and a Cufant," I responded with excitement, thinking of the precious pokemon I had researched before. Gary laughed, sounding surprised and I cocked my head at him as a silent inquiry.
"Sorry. It's just that those are two very different pokemon, especially once they're evolved. I was just surprised to hear them both in the same sentence," Gary said with a grin and I laughed good-naturedly, brushing my hands through my curly bangs.
"I guess so. I'd like to have a better variety on my team this time though. In the past I was always drawn to the basic fire, water, and grass types; I hardly ever branched out from that. After being a breeder's assistant and training so many different pokemon though, I want to try my hand at training a pokemon from every different typing at least once."
"Even ghost type?" Gary asked with a hint of teasing in his voice. My body stiffened and I looked over at him warily as he tried to bite back a chuckle.
"How did you know I hate ghost type pokemon?" I mumbled, feeling embarrassed by my silly fear.
"I heard some of your friends teasing you about it and one of them scared you pretty good on the tour. I thought it was funny, so that's probably why I remembered you," Gary said with a small grin and I sighed.
"Hopefully I can get over my fear if I actually train a ghost type..." I said without conviction and Gary chuckled again. I could feel the train beginning to slow and Gary looked down at his tablet before slipping it into his backpack and standing up.
"This is my stop. It was fun to bump into you again, Sayuri."
"You too, Gary. Sorry I didn't remember you at first," I apologized and Gary shook his head with a grin.
"Good luck with your journey," he said before slipping out of the seat across from me and walking down to one of the many doors that would eventually let him off the train.
I watched him go with a small sense of sadness. It figured that the first boy that didn't remind me of my jerk of an ex could only stick around for a short conversation. I turned back to the window and focused on the scenery passing me though, refocusing on my goal of getting an endorsement so I could join the Galar League challenge.
* * * * * *
I was not exactly pleased when I found out that even though there was a stop labeled "Turffield" on the train route, it was nearly a 15 mile trip from the train stop to the actual town. My annoyance quickly faded away though when I began making my way through several grassy fields filled with adorable grass type pokemon. It took all my self-control to not catch one of the darling Bounsweet that I saw bouncing through the grass, but I had promised myself that I would not catch any pure grass, water, or fire types until I had met my goal of training one of every different pokemon typing. Dual typings were okay though, so I kept my eyes peeled for any pokemon that I might want to add to my team.
My concentration was broken when I heard the sound of a battle going on. Feeling curious, I wandered off the path over towards a rocky patch that seemed to lead to a river. Following the sounds of battle wasn't hard, and soon I had found the source. My mouth dropped open in shock as I watched an unusual pokemon battling a large Crawdaunt. The pokemon had a crown of large feathers coming up from its head, but its front legs were wickedly sharp talons, its back legs were scaly but looked similar to a muscular Ninetales, and its tale was a huge fin! I had never seen such a hodgepodge pokemon in my life and I couldn't help but sit on the rocks and watch with utter fascination as its trainer led his pokemon in their battle against the irritated Crawdaunt.
"Use Multi-attack, Silvally!" A glow seemed to spring to life from the center of the strange pokemon and it rushed forward, raking its talons across the Crawdaunt's body and causing it to be tossed through the air for a few moments before tumbling across the rocks. The Crawdaunt used its claws to push itself up, growling angrily at its opponent before letting loose a powerful Hydro Pump attack. Silvally leaped out of the jet of water's path, but its trainer did not have as quick of reflexes and he was sent crashing onto his back on the rocky surface by the power of the move.
"Oh my gosh!" I cried out without thinking, rushing over to the fallen trainer. "Are you hurt? I asked, checking to make sure there wasn't any blood pooling around his head where he had hit it against the rocks. The trainer groaned, then I heard a yip of pain, and I turned to see that his Silvally had been rushing to his trainer but the Crawdaunt had shot him with another Hydro Pump while his back was turned.
"Hey!" I yelled at the unsportsmanlike pokemon. "Knock it off, already!"
"Craw crawdaunt!" The large pokemon sneered at me, aiming his claws directly at me this time.
I reached for one of my Pokeballs and tossed it up, releasing Chesnaught who sprang from my Pokeball with a wicked grin. He shielded me from the Hydro Pump, not even bothering to try and defend himself against it, and I could almost see the Crawdaunt sweating as he took in his new opponent.
"Use Seed Bomb, Chesnaught," I ordered, moving so I could watch the fun unfold.
Chesnaught grinned and flexed his shell, sending five perfectly aimed seeds shooting from his spiky shell to surround the rude pokemon. Crawdaunt turned to run, but as soon as the seeds touched the ground they exploded, tossing the pokemon so far into the air that it went crashing into the river with a gigantic splash.
"Serves you right, you jerk!" I yelled towards the river before turning and walking back over to the fallen trainer. Silvally had apparently shaken off the Hydro Pump because he was standing next to his trainer giving out worried whimpers from his throat.
"Hey, are you okay?" I called out, kneeling gingerly next to the unconscious man and reaching out to place my palm near his mouth. I was relieved when I could feel warm air washing across my palm and he let out a short groan. Silvally sighed in relief and licked his trainer with a long, bumpy tongue as his trainer began to flutter open his eyes.
He was wearing nearly all black, and I was surprised he wasn't freezing since his clothes had rips all through them. His blonde hair was cut short except for his bangs which covered nearly all of his right eye from sight. He groaned once again and blinked, revealing dark green irises and I frowned slightly as I leaned over him.
"Hey, you hit your head pretty hard. Are you feeling okay? Any nausea?" I asked, feeling like a worried mother. After spending two years training with breeders it had become almost second nature to me to care for injured pokemon, but I had never had to take care of a human before.
"Who.. are you?" The guy's one visible eye narrowed in obvious confusion as he focused on my face and I leaned back, relieved that he could speak at least.
"My name is Sayuri. I was just passing by when I saw what happened. Chesnaught kind of went overboard and the Crawdaunt is gone, I hope you weren't trying to catch it," I said apologetically, looking up at my hulking starter.
I had only recently evolved Quilladin into a Chesnaught during my pokemon journey in Unova, and he had taken to his new physical prowess with gusto. His love of battles had been part of what motivated me to pursue becoming a trainer that challenged pokemon leagues for a living, and he didn't seem at all sorry for blowing the Crawdaunt away. To be honest, I thought the Crawduant deserved it after being such a cowardly battler.
"Wasn't trying to catch it," the guy muttered under his breath, pushing himself up into a seated position. He winced and let out a sharp exhale of pain as he clutched at his head. I quickly reached out and steadied him before he tipped over and fell to the ground again and he looked over at me with a frown.
"I'm fine," he said gruffly, moving away from my steadying hand and I rolled my eyes.
"I can see that," I responded sarcastically before looking over at his pokemon.
Silvally was looking at his trainer with worry, but when he felt my gaze he looked up and gave me a big smile. I let out a gasp of surprise when Silvally walked carefully over his trainer's legs and slobbered me with a wet lick across my cheek. I laughed at the unexpected show of affection and wiped off my cheek.
"At least you're polite enough to be grateful. Take care of your stubborn trainer, okay?" I said with a chuckle, patting Silvally on his feathered head before standing up. Just as I was returning Chesnaught, I heard the sound of a throat being cleared faintly. I turned around to see the trainer facing away from me, but his visible eye flicked over to meet mine briefly.
"Thanks for your help," he said quietly. I smiled and nodded simply.
"I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt. Good luck with everything...." I trailed off expectantly, hoping he would fill in the empty space with his name. The blonde frowned slightly, looking like he wished I would just leave.
"Gladion," he responded with reluctantly and I smiled again.
"Well, it was nice to meet you, Gladion. Stay safe," I said in parting before I turned and walked back towards the path that would take me to Turffield.
