Only you

Hey, you Contestshippers out there!
(If you don't ship Contest, here's your door ->🚪
Just a little joke, hehe ^^)

As you might have guessed, it's Amoryna here!
This is one more CS oneshot I wrote, this time it's a songfiction. (I've never done that before O.o)
It's not only my first one also the first request I've ever gotten. (You have no idea how happy I am 😉)

By the way, before I forget it, the song is I'm Only Me When I'm With You by Taylor Swift. Fortunately, I actually like it although it's more like the typical love song that matches for almost every couple. (Although some lines are especially fitting for May and Drew...)
It wasn't that easy to come up with a story that isn't some cheeky "happy, loving couple"-stuff because that gets boring easily. I also tried to put as much lines of the song in here is possible. Tell me what you think about it!

Enjoy! (I hope it actually IS enjoyable...)

"Friday night beneath the stars
In a field behind your yard
You and I are paintin' pictures in the sky

And sometimes we don't say a thing
Just listen to the crickets sing
Everything I need is right here by my side

And I know everything about you
I don't wanna live without you"

The little, five-year-old girl laughed happily, twirling around with her mother in the living room along to Taylor Swift's voice booming out of the music player's loudspeakers. Her short, blond-brunette hair flew around her head, as if the wind would rush through it, along with the song's lyrics she didn't quite know and dancing her soul out full of enthusiasm. Her sapphire blue eyes sparkled from bliss and joy. Caroline watched her little daughter with awe. The little kid was no doubt a bubbly bundle of energy.

"When I'm with anybody else, it's so hard to be myself
Only you can tell

That I'm only up when you're not down
Don't wanna fly if you're still on the ground
It's like no matter what I do
Well, you drive me crazy half the time
The other half I'm only trying
To let you know that what I feel is true
And I'm Only Me When I'm With You."

All too soon, the song ended and the girl immediately stopped moving and glared at the music player, as if it was to blame for the song's shortness, before finally collapsing on the sofa. Now that the song was no longer playing, she finally realised how tired all the dancing had actually gotten her.

Her mother carefully sit down on the pillows next to the tiny brunette. "So, MayMay, no more dancing?", she concluded, smiling warmily. "Nah", the girl, May, muttered while lying back, closing her eyes and yawning loudly, "I'm sooooooooooo exhausteeeeeed." Her words made her purple haired mother laugh once more. May was obviously proud of knowing such a "difficult word" as "exhausted" at her age. If she wanted to, she could act really cutely sometimes.

After a few seconds, May, still far too agitated to sleep, blinked at Caroline again, eyeing her shyly.
"Hey, Mommy?", she began hesitantly what only made the woman's smile deepen.
"Yes, honey?", she answered quietly, leaning forwards to understand her daughter better.
"Do you think the woman in the song is happily in love with that guy she talks about?"
Caroline suppressed a tiny giggle. "You think she is, don't you?"

May nodded deep in thought. "She sounds like she found her other half", she answered slowly, staring into the distance before turning to look at her mother again, "Do you think I'll find someone like that someday?"
While speaking, her big blue eyes widened questioningly and a little afraidly at the same time.

That made Caroline smile warmily once again. Yeah, she should have expected that question from little, romantic stories loving May. "Of course, my dear", she promised convincedly, "I'm sure your Prince Charming is somewhere out there only waiting for you. Maybe someday you'll hear that song again and realise you've already found him.

A dreamly grin spread across May's face as she let herself flop back into the pillows. "Yeah", she muttered happily, her voice trailing off slowly, "Maybe..."

^°^ *•* ^°^

15-year-old May Maple gritted her teeth angrily and pressed her clenched fists together, staring at the scene in front of her with her right eye twitching. Hearthome City's contest hall's battleield was clouded with dust and as her fire-fighting-type was thrown to the ground by a more than powerful solar beam, fired by his opponent, Roserade. Even if the grass-type-attack was hardly effective, the direct hit caused her points on the monitor over the field to lower even more than they already had in the four minutes the battle had lasted so far.

"Blazi!", her exhausted partner growled, attempting to push himself back up to his feet from the ground but failing and collapsing back into the sand. Single sweatdrops were rolling down his face and his body was scattered with scratches and bruises. The battle really was pushing himself and his panicking trainer to their limits.
They were losing. It was a fact not only she but also the audience could easily tell, especially if you compared her points that had dropped down to a fourth, with her opponents still more than half filled ones.

Said opponent was recently smirking at her from the other side of the field, emerald green eyes glimmering triumphantly while his partner gracefully landed on the ground in front of him. Roserade still looked a lot healthier than that now panting fire-type, although she was breathing heavily herself. Her trainers smirk broadened at the sight of Blaziken's terrible state and he arrogantly flicked his ice green bangs at his tensed up rival.

"Loosing again, May? Told you so", he mocked before leaning back relaxedly and glancing at Roserade, "Now, end this utterly embarrassing performance by using petal dance."
The grass-type obeyed his orders and lifted her rose-shaped hands to release a final attack, equally as powerful as the last, if not more so.

May pressed her hands together even more, so much the way her nails were forced into the inside of her hand actually hurt. She knew as well as the cartereuse haired teen that Blaziken wouldn't bear more than another hit until it would be knocked out cold, even if her points would allow it.

Then it would be over. Drew would've defeated her once again and earn his fifth Sinnoh contest ribbon, giving him the permission to enter this year's Grand Festival. Another proof that she and her pitiful two ribbons were no match for him at all. She just couldn't let this happen.
But what, for Mew's sake, was she supposed to do? It was over. She couldn't help it. Couldn't change the unpreventable.
But she had to!

Staring at her almost unconscious partner on the ground in horror, she opened her mouth to shriek out one last attack. "Blaziken! Overheat!"
That was all the blaze pokémon needed. His head shot up, flames of determination danicing in his blue and yellow eyes as he created a huge ball of fire in front of his mouth and fired it at his opponent without even hesitating.

Drew's eyes widened at Blaziken's sudden power while he was mentally cursing himself for forgetting about the fire-type's special ability that inceased the power of his fire attacks in critical situations.
"Roserade!", he shouted, eyes widening in shock, but it was long too late for her to dodge the nearing fire, even if the grass-type wouldn't have been focusing on her own petal dance.

The overheat burned the petals as if they were nothing, transforming them into falling ashes as the attack crashed into poor, help - and defenseless - Roserade. The thorn pokémon was thrown back, hitting the wall behind her trainer - hard -, landing on the ground unconsciously.

The judges looked at each other with an incredulous expression on their faces that mirrored Drew's. One second later, three red crosses lit up on their desks' monitors, declaring the obvious.
"Well, that didn't go quite as expected", Emilian, the contest's commentator, announced as the crowd went wild, "A single attack managed to change the battle's whole outcome dramatically! Roserade is unable to battle! That means, the win goes to Blaziken and May!"

May stood there, frozen in place, eyes as wide as her rival's. She couldn't quite believe what she just saw or heard. She... won? Soon, her brain started accepting the fact that she really just managed to beat one of the fiercest opponents of her whole coordinating career, which was a real rarity - she could count the times it actually happened on one hand - and a feeling of utter bliss and relief emerged from the pits of her stomach.

But her happiness disappeared as soon as she took a glance over to her rival on the battle field's other side. His head hung low with his smooth, green bangs covering his face, preventing the audience including May, Emilian and the judges from seeing the expression on it, as he recalled his beaten partner. His lips parted as he mumbled something to Roserades pokéball May couldn't understand from the distance.
He looked a little... unlike himself. As if he was really upset over the recent loss, something he'd never let show like that. He had been so sure to be winning this battle.

Well, he indeed wasn't the only one to have awaited that result. May really hadn't been on her best terms today, although her Pokémon had had a type advantage on his. Her win had obviously been due to pure luck, not skills. He would have been the one to deserve it, considering the clear fact that she hadn't been anywhere near a tough match for him and Roserade today. He had every reason to be upset.

Somehow something inside her wouldn't let her quite enjoy the satisfaction of beating him although she couldn't quite understand why. Even when she congratulated Blaziken, shook hands with Drew some minutes later - as to be expected, he had long managed to pull himself back together and was smirking cockily again although he stayed silent - and collected her ribbon from Mr Contesta, she had to put on a fake smile.

^°^ *•* ^°^

It took the blonde-brunette a little more than half an hour to get all her stuff from her locker, feed her cheering and proud fire-type and her Glaceon she used for the appeal's round, her remaining pokéblocks and get over this afternoon's events.
By the time she finally exited the contest hall, all the other coordinators had long left so it took her by surprise to meet Drew leaning against a wall cooly and waiting for her outdoors. He had his eyes closed and was silently smirking to himself as if he'd consider himself as better or more valuable than every single person surrounding him.

May inwardly groaned. She was having mixed feelings about this. Though it was no doubt a good thing he seemed to have overcome his loss, this expression couldn't lead to something positive. She'd had to learn that the hard way a long time ago. If he wore that arrogant, overconfident smirk off his, he would most likely end up insulting her to a point she'd find herself close to tears.

If it was the "I want to see you down whatever it costs"-insulting or just the "I want to make you angry but don't know where to stop"-teasing she couldn't really tell herself. Although she highly doubted it was the latter.

Why, you may ask? Well, even if it was crazy, May sometimes felt like he'd be able to look right through her. He always seemed to know exactly what thoughts passed by inside her head and what feelings her heart dealt with at what time.

It was as if he could read her like a book. As if he'd always know what page to look at and how to decipher its codes. And the worst aspect: He knew very well how to use it against her and had never hesitated the slightest to actually do so.
Sometimes it even made May suspicious how exactly he knew which of her buttons he needed to push to get what reaction of her.

"Well, well, if it isn't our little Hearthome contest-champion", he started, opening his stunning, in this case mischievous, emerald green eyes, still grinning at her arrogantly.

May smiled warmly nevertheless, being happy to see he'd come over the surprising loss so quickly, and happy to see him in general.
"Hey, Drew!", she exclaimed, beaming, "It's great to meet you here! That was a really close battle, right? You and Roserade did an amazing job."

"Nothing I could say about you and Blaziken", he replyed confidently, flicking his hair satisfactionally as if May had just played right into his cards by mentioning their battle.
The girl's eyebrows furrowed. Now she really had a bad feeling about this for a reason.

"Even a blind person would have realized that this was nowhere near a worthy performance", he continued mercilessy, "You know, there's no point or even fun in loosing to you if you're not even able to put up a real fight. All you did out there today was embarrassing yourself and your pokémon. I actually even feel bad for them for having such a terrible trainer."

There: He insulted her. He threw a bunch of very carefully chosen, mean words at her while this special glint in his eyes was telling May that he knew exactly how she inwardly reacted to it. It was like a fire of rage lit up in her stomach, burning her inside and making the anger rise further and further, to a point she wouldn't be able to hold it back anymore.

And he knew that. He was very well aware that she also knew herself, but that only seemed to drag him to go on even more.
"With another trainer... Blaziken would probably have had the possibility of using his type advantage and would've been given the opportunity to be ahead of Roserade from the first second on", he explained, smirk broadening, "But I somehow doubt you even had a clue about how much effect fire-attacks have on a grass-type..."

That did it. May balled her fists again and gritted her teeth before finally shouting at him.
"Of course I knew about that all the way along! And who are you to talk, anyway?! You lost if I may remind you!"

From Drew came a mocking laugh. "You really are proud of that, aren't you, June? That's even more pathetic than I thought you were. We both know how lucky you were out there. I would have crushed you the most in contest history if it weren't for that overheat."

He leaned away from the wall, his face and upper body coming a little closer to the blonde-brunette.
"Now, if you're able to look me in the eyes and tell me fully honestly that you deserved that win more than I did, I'll let the topic go without missing a beat." He lowered his head, his triumphantly glimmering, emerald eyes seeming to burn holes inside her sapphire ones.

There it was again. As if he knew she considered the whole thing as unfair as he seemed to. And how the heck was he able to guess what an awful liar she was?
"Uh...", she started determined to trick him only this once.

But then, she made the terrible mistake to look back into his eyes. Because as soon as she was caught in their breathtaking gaze, her tongue simply wasn't able to stumble her brain's well prepared but long forgot words anymore.

Drew just smirked at her triumphantly as if he knew very well he'd won their little fight.
"So?", he asked, although she could see in his eyes that he couldn't have been more sure about the answer. Well, he seemingly was able to read every single thought that crossed her mind and he never doubted himself, so he had known all along.

May couldn't hold his stare any longer, so she turned her head away in a weak attempt to defeat herself.
"It doesn't matter who deserves the win, anyway", she mumbled, not quite as tough or determined as she'd intended, "Even if you deserved this ribbon more than I do, I wouldn't give it to you for anything! And we both know that you wouldn't accept it! Your arrogance and pride wouldn't let you!"

While confronting him with the last sentences she secretly thought were pretty tough, she put her hands on her hips and stepped more forward, accidentally lessening the space between them.
Drew - who was as oblivious to the small gape that was left between them - couldn't prevent his smirk from fading the slightest bit, even if it was only for a mere second before he pulled himself back together.

"If that's really the most important about contests for you, you're even worse than I thought", her rival shot back, arrogant smirk as present as ever, "Really, April, you should have been a coordinator long enough to know that winning isn't the only thing that matters. But if your opinion actually is that one-sided, I'm not sure anymore if you're even worthy being my rival."

That words made May freeze in spot as she stared at the green haired teen with white, incredulous, horrified, blue eyes. He... he couldn't be serious about that, ...could he?
What's that really everything their long time rivalry meant to him? Someone who would be sure to put up a good fight? Was she as a coordinator really everything he cared about? Not... May as a... person?

For some strange reason that very likely possibility really got her worked up and surprisingly - even if she'd never admit it - close to hot tears that welled up in her eyes. They were accompanied by a strong wave of fury that made her shriek out the following words.
"So?! Then if you don't think I'm worthy being your rival, why do you even bother wasting your time with me? Why do you waste your energy to come up with that useless insults? Why don't you just go? Because I'm not the one who wants you to be here!"

In her rage, she stepped forward once more so that her and Drew's face were only inches apart. A mistake - again - because it allowed him to see the forced back teardrops in her glimmering, sapphiran orbs. But at the same time, it made her able to detect the hurt expression that flashed through his own green eyes.

It was enough to instantly make May's anger fade. Drew was the only person who could do that to her. He was the only one who could free every single side of her. Nothing seemed to be easier for him than coordinating and making May furious. Even if she'd been totally worried about him the second before.
Yeah, it was driving her nuts, really.

Just a sad glance from him could awaken her compassion and sorrow in every state. He could turn her into a flustered, embarrassed, stuttering and tripping mess by just looking at her directly with those gorgeous eyes of his. Maybe because she had grown to like him a little too much.

They opened their mouths at the same time - she to apologise and take back her hurting words, he to make up for his little slip-up by insulting her once more - but were beaten to it by a high pitched - but not in a girly way -, More than unwanted voice behind them.

"Aw, look who we have here ~", it chirped as the two coordinators felt themselves being pushed into each other by two unmistakable hands with manicured nails, "Our two lovebirds flirting again... Did her boyfriend congratulate our lil' gingerbread cookie? But... there's something I miss... May, dear, where's your red rose? Didn't he give you your well-deserved today? Oh, what a shame!"
While speaking, a long purple haired, dressed in an a little too flamboyant Cacturne suit figure appeared next to them, grinning at the two younger coordinators.

May's eyes widened again in both horror and surprise as she was too shocked to attempt to struggle against the man's grip while Drew - being the fast one of the two - had already freed himself and pushed the purple head away.
"Harley", He groaned under his breath, "What do you want? And to your information, I'm NOT nor will ever be this lame excuse for a coordinator's boyfriend. How many times have I already told you that?!

That words were enough to make May's anger boil again. She hastily pulled away from Harley and glared at Drew, teeth gritted once again.
"I'm done here. You can be sure that we'll never have any business with each other because I'd rather die than spend another second in the same area as you, you jerk!"
She clenched her fists angrily, not even recognising the other adult coordinator with long, salomon colored hair, who was about to join the group.

The woman blinked confusedly as the red-faced blonde-brunette rushed past her, but when she looked at the two males' expressions behind the girl, realization struck her and she couldn't help but sweatdrop with a weak smile.

Drew didn't even look at her, being too busy cursing lightly before he mumbled a silent but audible "Damn it" and hurried to follow his enraged rival.
"Hey, May! Wait up, you didn't mean that, did you?! Tell me you didn't!"

Solidad suppressed a slight chuckle and joined an also sweatdropping Harley at the contest hall's front doors.
"The usual?", she asked, turning serious again. Harley snorted but continued grinning smugly nonetheless.
"Yep", was all he answered, yawning, as if he was getting bored of the two teens' (according to May non-existing,) ever repeating business.

"Well...", Solidad went on soberly, "Should we follow them, then?"
That question made Harley's grin widen as he nodded with a slight hint of excitement. He then grabbed the female coordinator's wrist and she allowed him to drag her after the two targets fastly.

Meanwhile, Drew had managed to reach May in the middle of one of Hearthome's main streets. The girl stood there, hands on knees, panting, as she tried to catch her breath and to ignore the hurt and her left side.
She'd really want to pull herself out of the situation desperately. Drew and Harley together were just too much for her to bear. One of them was already more or less exhausting but the two of them in the same place made are nearly deadly combination she didn't want to deal with right now.

"Hey, May, listen...", Drew started slightly breathlessy but was again interrupted by the purple haired man who arrived some seconds later, Solidad following right after him.
"What are you so upset about, my little gingerbread cookie? I'm sure Drewsiepoo just made another one of his lame jokes."

Drew growled annoyedly, louder than before and turned around to look at Harley with a murderous expression in his shining emerald eyes. "Call me that once more and I'll show you what real regret is", he garantued.

May, however, didn't really pay any attention to what was happening around her. Her eyes and ears were focused on the big crowd fifty meters down the street, surrounding a little stage. A very well known melody emerged from its loudspeakers, playing along with a woman's voice.

"Through it all nobody gets me like you do

And you know everything about me You say that you can't live without me

I'm only up when you're not down
Don't wanna fly if you're still on the ground
It's like no matter what I do
Well, you drive me crazy half the time
The other half I'm only trying
To let you know that what I feel is true
And I'm only me when I'm with you."

May straightened herself automatically as she tried her best to catch a glance at the star but failed. It didn't really matter, anyway - the most important thing at the moment were the tunes themselves that made her heart skip a beat. She did know that song.

It immediately reminded her of her childhood days when her mother would promise her over and over again that when she had that song once more as a grown-up, the prince of her dreams would be near, even if she didn't know yet.

That thought suddenly awakened the Butterfree in her stomach and her cheeks flushed red as she shot a quick gaze at her green haired rival next to her. It couldn't possibly be... him, could it?

May suppressed a gulp as she turned away hastily. "I... I think I gotta go now... Still some stuff to prepare for heading on to Snowpoint City", She mumbled quickly, lowering her head and attempting to walk away.

However, before she was able to do so, Solidad, who the younger coordinator still hadn't even realised, stopped her in tracks.
"Hey, May, you remember that little celebrating party at the concert hall at eight p.m. that night? You're gonna be there, aren't you? You're the contest's winner after all."

May blinked confusedly and turned around to face her salomon haired friend. "Solidad? What... What are you doing in Hearthome City? You... you didn't participate in the contest..."

The older coordinates gave her teenage friend a warm smile while Drew opened his mouth, no doubt to tease May about being oblivious to her surroundings.
Solidad's warning glare saying "Don't make it worse than you already did if you don't even want to", however, prevented him from telling the blonde-brunette the words that lay on his tongue.

"I Wanted to see you all again and what you perform", she explained, her smile present on her face again - yeah, she could be quite the actress. "It's been a very long time since I last did."
She didn't even give the girl the chance to interrupt her as she continued immediately. "So, May, what do you think? Are we going to see you at the party later? I was hoping on finding the time to catch up about our journeys with you guys."

"I...", May started, quite unsure about what to say. She still was mad at Drew and wouldn't want to be on the same party with him. Harley needed no explanation. But if Solidad, no doubt the most constant friend out of the three, asked her like that...
"Sure you will", she stuttered out hastily before turning away and disappearing into the crowd, causing Solidad's smile to widen. That was exactly what she'd intended to achieve.

Meanwhile, Drew's gaze followed May disappear as he frowned and thoughtfully, then looked up at the stage where the woman's voice had long faded. May indeed was acting quite strangely. That song couldn't possibly be the reason, could it? What even was all that about?

^°^ *•* ^°^

With an annoyed look on his face for the seemingly hundredst time that day, Drew pushed his way through the crowd that seemed to be composed of nothing but completely hormone-crazed teenage girls and women, who would kill for a single dance with him.

None of them seemed to care the slightest about the fact that he actually LOST the contest, they were head over heels for him, nevertheless. It felt like being surrounded by a hord of his awfullest fangirls. One of his worst nightmares. It reminded him of being captured inside a way too small room with squealing demons. He could already tell that he'd be long dead by the time he got himself out of this living hell without any start and ending.

But that suddenly changed as he spotted an acquaintanced face somewhere next to the dining table. He silently smirked to himself while elbowing another too loud girl away without even looking at her.
Sure May would be in the contest hall's corner closest to the food.

But on second thought... she looked nowhere as excited as that fact normally got her. She wasn't bubbling about some random stuff with anyone either. How ironic that nobody seemed to care about the contest's actual winner.
In fact, she was... unusually quiet, sitting there alone and staring into the distance thoughtfully, chin on her palms. The closer he got to her, the more worried she got the green haired teen. She still seemed quite unlike her normal, enthusiastic self.

Now Drew was absolutely sure. Something definitely was wrong. Something that got her thinking while her brain had a hard job understanding what crossed her mind.
It couldn't probably be his earlier teasing nor was this the reason she got some worked up back then, right?

"Hey, May", Drew finally spoke up when he reached her, ignoring his now murmuring fangirls behind him.
His words make the blonde-brunette snap out of her trance as she looked up and hissed upon seeing her rival standing in front of her in a formal black suit.

She hardly noticed his clothing at first, however, as she was too busy turning away. It was easy to tell that she still was angry at him because of the earlier events or she just didn't want to be near him for a different reason. Drew seriously hoped in what's the latter.
After an awkwardly silent second or so, the girl finally pulled herself together and forced herself to look back at him again with a determined expression.

It was the first time that evening Drew finally realised she'd dressed up for the celebrations as well: Her hardly shoulder-long hair was tied up into two side ponytails that were decorated with red bands. Two strains of light brown hair were curled Around her face in a cute way and she was wearing a red mini-dress. Tight around her upper body, welling down freely to her knees. It was strapless but reached to her neck decorated with sparkling white tiny stones.
Her feet were covered by red not-too-high-and-as-pure-as-the-dress-and-May-herself highheels, more little ballerinas.

The female coordinator opened her mouth quickly, obviously to snap at him to be safe. Drew would have interrupted her already by that time if he wasn't speechless at the sight and too busy staring at her, gaping, eyes wide in awe.

The rare moment was crashed, however, by another random girl that appeared next to Drew - seemingly out of nowhere. She was beaming happily at her idol, not even noticing May next to him.
"May I have that dance?", she asked, stretching her hand out to him, bowing.

Drew blinked, being pulled back to reality by that more than unwanted question. He shot a surprised glance at the one responsible for interrupting his stare, scanning over her a-lot-too-unnaturally-pink, showing-way-too-much-skin-for-his-taste dress as well as her covered-in-cheap-makeup face.

As to be expected, he then turned away a little too quickly. "No, please not again", was the only thought that crossed his mind.
No, he sure wouldn't waste any more rejecting works at that cliché fangirl-type. He had had to deal with that a lot too much already that evening.

"Come on, let's get outta here. I won't be able to spend one more minute in that chaos", He growled, grabbing a horrified May by the wrist and pulling her towards the exit, ignoring her determined protests. He also didn't waste a single thought on the odd looks they were getting, as well as the fact that is rival had gone over to hitting his arm in an unsuccessful attempt to free herself as he dragged her through the contest hall's back doors, out into the darkness of the clear night.

When they reached the dark street's corner, May finally managed to push him away, glaring at him furiously.
"What the heck is wrong with you?!", she exclaimed angrily, stepping back and creating space between them, "You idiot! Why can't you just leave me alone?! I liked it in there and now I'm all cold! Why did you make me leave?! Me of all people?!"

But surprisingly, Drew just reacted with a warm smile. No not an I'm-so-much-better-than-you smirk but a warm, honest smile.

The sudden silence and the night's darkness and atmosphere were everything he needed to calm down and get over his earlier rage. And perhaps May's presence...

"Has it ever occurred to you that maybe, I just wanted to spend some time with you, airhead? Some alone-time?", he mumbled, emerald green eyes sparkling with a faint hint of mischief in the clear starlight.

That statement or rather question really catched the blonde-brunette off guard and transformed her anger into confusion and utter disbelief in an instant. It took her some time to finally figure out the actual meaning of his words and some more moments to come up with a halfway decent, adequate answer.
"You... you what?" Yeah, halfway decent at the best.

Drew just nodded, his smile deepening as his emerald green eyes locked with her sapphire ones.
May's knees suddenly felt weak, the Butterfree dancing around a stomach like crazy and her face flushing bright red. Fortunately, the find lights weren't enough for him to see the latter. Although he was able to hear her unnaturally fast and loud heartbeat.
This wasn't going where she thought it did, ...was it? But when he mentioned the words "alone-time", he didn't actually mean... ?

"Here, follow me, there's something I'd want to show you", he muttered into her ear, sending shivers down her spine after he had minimized the space between them again. He grabbed her hand this time, leading her around house's the corner and down the next street a lot more softly than before.

May just obeyed his orders and actions. She'd long lost every oh so tiny will to resist him. She wouldn't manage to keep that up longer than a second, anyway.

^°^ *•* ^°^

Drew guided her through Hearthome's silent, dark and lonely roads, far enough for her to loose every single idea of where they were, until he finally shoved her through an open but hidden gate onto a wide grassy field behind a big mansion.

"I discovered this place when I was searching for a silent training spot some days earlier", he explained as May looked around in awe, mouth and eyes wide, "I like it's atmosphere. It calms me down as much as the night's freedom does."

That caused May to look at him surprisedly. It was really rare for him to be open to her like he was now. He normally covered his thoughts from everyone and kept her in the distance by insulting her, contrary to being nice like he was now.

"Wanna sit down?", he interrupted her thoughts silently. He let himself flop into the soft grass and and patted the spot beside to him. May hesitated for a moment, her mind listing up every single reason against accepting his offer, but then finally gave in and placed herself next to him, pulling her knees to her chest as if to protect herself.
If Drew realised, he didn't show it, just looked up at the sky while they fell into a comfortable silence.

"I'm sorry", hey spoke up after a couple of minutes, eying her carefully from the side, "You know, about today. I think I went a little too far this time. I didn't want to hurt you in any way. I'd never."
May lowered her head, her eyes glued on her right hand that was busy playing with the piles of grass.

Again, his words and especially the soft tone he used, surprised her and she didn't really know how to react. Could he honestly mean it?
Drew never admitted he was wrong in any point, so she had never heard him apologise for anything. She thought that his pride simply wouldn't allow that.

When she stayed silent, Drew went on even more carefully, coming to a quite risky topic. "What was that all about, anyway? You suddenly seemed so distracted. Was it that song?"

May had to fight a gulp as a bad feeling replaced the Butterfree inside her stomach. She knew very well that she didn't want to tell him about the answer to this question and would do a lot to prevent him from knowing that when we special secret of hers.

When she once again made no attempt to interrupt him, Drew continued, glancing up at the sky once again. "I asked Solidad about that afternoon's singer. According to her, the woman is part of a special group, reimagining old songs from the time when we were little some years ago, wanting to "reawaken their magic". They call themselves "The cupids". A very matching coincidence, isn't it?"

"Hm...", May muttered, dtill not looking at him, but at the distracting form the stars built above them.
"I've always used to dance to this song and sing it together with my mum when I was little", she explained quietly, smiling warmly, not quite sure what got her to tell him although she was nowhere near ready for that one minute ago. Maybe the night's peace had its effect on her as well.
"She would often tell me that when I heard it again some day, I'd realize the boy of my dreams had been beside me all the time. I just didn't notice it."

That obviously caught Drew off guard and got him speechless utterly surprisingly. He couldn't help the blush that suddenly started to spread over his cheeks. Fortunately, May wouldn't be able to see it in the darkness.
"Have you found him yet?", he finally managed to ask, turning towards her while trying his best to cover the fact that his voice was shaking nearly unrecognisably. His heart rate had also sped up a lot more than he would have appreciated.

"I... I actually don't know", she stuttered embarrassedly, stealing a quick side glance at him only to find him studying her face closely.
She blushed deep red, eyes locked with his once again and she lost herself in that beautiful emerald green orbs.
They stared at each other a little too long before finally realizing what they were actually doing and turning away hastily, both faces flushed a lot darker than May's dress.

"By the way, congratulations on that win", Drew started soon after, flicking his ice green bangs out of his face to cover his rare embarrassment, "Even if you'll never manage to convince me you actually deserved it."
There it was again. That arrogant, way too overconfident smirk of his.

May immediately felt the anger welling up inside her over his typically cocky comment.
Before she could destroy the harmonic atmosphere between them, however, she was interrupted by a perfect, blood red rose that suddenly landed in her lap. Her blush immediately reappeared, present as ever, as she looked up at him, blinking confusedly and incredulously at the same time.

He of course had long gone back to analysing the night sky.
"Uh... thanks...", she stuttered out lowering her head awkwardly.
"That's the first time Harley and I actually had the same opinion", her rival grinned, still looking up at the sky, "The whole situation did indeed lack something."

Even if she needed to, May wouldn't have been able to come up with an adequate answer. She didn't even know if she agreed or disagreed with him.
They both fell into a comfortable silence watching the stars above them and listening to the faint noises of tiny pokémon somewhere in the grass around them.

"You see that line of stars above us?", May finally muttered, pointing to a form in the black sky, "What zodiac sign is it?"
It took Drew a moment to understand what she was actually talking about, but then, his lips curved into a warm smile. "I don't know. I've never had the time to study astronomy, sadly", he confessed before turning towards her, "Why do you want to know?"

"I actually dunno", May giggled. Although she didn't have a clue why, she found the situation quite amusing. "Maybe it is a Magikarp", she continued, following the line of stars excitedly with her index finger, "Then that would be his fin. And that his flipper."

Drew chuckled lightly about her typical enthusiasm, examining the form closer. He then shook his head convincingly. "That definitely isn't a Magikarp, May", he then stated, sighing, "To me, it looks a lot more like a Torchic. There you have his head, his feathers, his body and his claws. And that's the beak."

He mimiced her movements as he drew the pokémon's silhouette in the sky, pushing her hand to the side in the process, his fingers touching hers for only a mere second.

May pulled away as if he'd burnt her and blushed heavily. It took her an awfully long moment to stumble out the first random thoughts at her mind, trying desperately to hide her actual embarrassment and the massive effect that simple touch had on her whole body.
"This... this is j-just like in the song... There's that line about p-painting pictures in the sky..."

After that she really wanted to slap herself for that horribly suggestive comment. Why the heck was she hinting this?! The last thing she wanted to happen was him to figure out what was on her mind including not only the song but also him.

But meanwhile, all that aspects were more than obvious to Drew, who suddenly wore an almost loving smile on his face again. May, however, was too busy cursing her practically non-existing acting skills to notice the unmistakable look that crossed his face for only a mere second.

"If you had told me before that I'd sink this low today to play that childish games with you, I would have asked you what confusion-attack you've catched yourself", he grinned as an answer to her long forgot statement.

What he didn't tell her was that he really liked the way this fact made him feel. He actually couldn't have enjoyed that special time with her more. Everything about his crazy, hectic, loud everyday-life stepped into a meaningless background. And all that stayed and mattered was him and her.

The huge, black, star-scattered blanket above them made everything seem so little, as if they were completely powerless compared to everything else in this universe. On that big scale, it was the two of them that were meaningless. Although to him this moment meant everything. She meant everything. What a crazy, confusing world.

"Hey, May?", he finally broke the silence that had come over them while he was thinking, as he turned his head to look at the blonde-brunette once again, "Have you ever went through your possibilities of that dream guy of yours?"

May blinked confusedly, looking away from the sky and into his eyes. She had absolutely no clue where this was going.
As she remained silent, Drew continued, his lips curving into a smile again. "Well, your mother said it would be someone who had been near you all the time, even if you didn't realize it. And shouldn't you be here, right by your side, right now, then? So, tell me, how many guys do you know that fit into that criteria?"

That question caused May to title her head and look into the distance, thinking seriously about his question. Yeah, how many guys like that did she know?
The only ones that occurred to her were Ash, Max and Brock, although she wouldn't ever think of one of them as possible love interest. Brock was too old anyways and he and Ash were more like May's big brothers. Max didn't need an explanation. He indeed was her actual brother after all, so anything else would be insane.

And none of them were by her side right now like Drew told her, so...
Wait a sec. Drew.
May silently facepalmed. Of course he had to be the questions answer. She somehow felt as if she'd known all along.
He had been there for her more recently than for example Ash ever did. And he also was here right now...

But why would he hint that he could possibly be May's prince her mother promised her? That didn't make any sense, unless...
But no, he'd never like her. Even the thought was just ludicrous.
"I... I don't understand", she stated, looking at the grass in front of her, cheeks tinted red.

That brought a cocky smirk to her rival's lips again. "Sure you wouldn't", he grinned flicking his bangs out of his face for seemingly the thousandth time that day, "You're ever the dense one, June, aren't you?"
May's hands balled into fists again as the anger rose inside her once more. But another time, Drew continued before she could even open her mouth for a remark.

"Let me simplify it for you, then. That guy has been there for you for the past five years whenever you need him?", he asked awfully slowly, stressing every word as if he was talking to a five-year-old, "Who is driving you insane half the time although you to get along very well? Who can easily get out every single part of you whenever he wants to?  You can't be happy when he isn't, can you? And he knows that very well because he gets you like no one else does. Who did you just leave that song's first part with? And who is by your side right now? Any idea who I could be talking about?"

May pouted. He always made it sound like she didn't have an IQ at all.
"Well, you", she snapped defiantly, purposefully still not looking at him, "Only you. But what do you want to tell me with that any-?"

She interrupted herself, eyes widening with both realization and surprise as Drew suddenly leaned in, coming a lot too close to her and especially her face for comfort.
May gulped. He... he wasn't going to..., was he?

But only a mere second before his lips could brush against hers, he turned his head to her ear instead.
"Just accept it, April. You want to believe I'm your prince, anyways, don't you?", he muttered into her ear voice barely more than a raspy whisper that sended shivers down her spine.

He was right, after all. No one could get that intense reactions out of her but him. Only him.
"Admit that I indeed do know everything about you, May. And that you do, too, only the other way around. And if you don't yet, I'm gonna make sure you will starting with..."

His voice slowly faded, his eyes focusing on her mouth this time as he inched even more close, just the slightest, before touching her lips with his for only a split second.
May couldn't help but inhale sharply, not able to react until he'd already pulled back, frozen in place, eyes as big as sources. A tingling, warming feeling emerged from the pits of her stomach as the Butterfree inside her started dancing tango.

"... the fact that maybe... just maybe... you've made me fall in love with you hopelessly and that I'd equally love being your prince", he confessed, smirk as present as ever - despite the content of what he just admitted - his forehead still touching hers, "You really should consider yourself very lucky, August. There are a lot too many girls out there who would murder for this very special honour."

If she wasn't caught in a dreamingly and believing trance, May would have snorted about his typical overconfidence and how he managed to ruin his confession's romantic character by being his arrogant self.
Although May wouldn't think of it that way. Somehow he just decorated the magical three - or just a little more, in that case - words with his very personal touch she adored so much.

Yeah, all those thoughts would have crossed her head right now if her mind hadn't been covered with big, fluffy, pink clouds. Her mouth stood agape as she stared at the green haired teen in front of her, who had leaned back by now, and her heart raced like crazy. The fact that her face was bright red, didn't even need to be mentioned.
There he was, telling her what she'd always wished to hear from him and her brain, which was unable to build any words and deliver them to her tongue, wouldn't let her give him any kind of answer.

Drew's smirk had long disappeared from his face while his eyes were glimmering with a quite strange expression. His whole body was tensed up, awaiting that the blonde-brunette started speaking almost fearfully.
Yeah, he did know everything about her, got her like nobody else did. Only excluding that little detail.

Finally, a warm smile made its way to May's lips and she looked at him lovingly although being not quite able to believe his words yet.
"Then I'll tell you one more thing about me you surprisingly don't seem to know yet", she admitted, sapphire blue eyes sparkling mischievously as she leaned back in to mutter her next words into his ear quietly, "There's nothing that could make me happier than the boy I've been in love with for the past five years, ever since I've met him, being the prince I've always dreamt of."

Before Drew even had the time to process her words, she'd already snuggled into him closely, placed her head on his chest and closed her eyes, calmly listening to the natural sounds around them and enjoying the feeling of utter bliss that was spreading inside of her. Her hands were clenched around the red rose in her lap. Somehow it also was a very special sign of his love for her itself, after all.
Only he could make her feel this way and for that, she loved him even more.

After a short moment of shock and light blushing, Drew couldn't help but smile warmly about her actions, just as she had before.
"Make yourself feel at home", he muttered more to himself than to her, a slight hint of irony in his voice.

May, however, was too focused on his presence to hear him, something Drew was very well aware of. He just silently smiled to himself, all the happiness and joy he recently felt pictured in his sparkling, emerald ice for once, as he pulled her into his arms and laid his head atop of hers, his glaze returning to the blinking stars above them.

"Hey, airhead?", he then started, eyes flickering back to her.
"Hm?", was all she answered, already half asleep. It really had been an exhausting day, after all.
"I guess I really couldn't live without you", Drew mumbled, barely audible although he did indeed want her to hear it. That shouldn't be a problem because of the close proximity.

If she did so, however, remained a mystery as she didn't answer. Her eyes were still closed and her breathing had become silent and even. Her hands were unconsciously clenched onto his shirt and the rose and she wore a truly peaceful expression on her face, accompanied by a blissful smile that made Drew's heart flutter.

He knew she felt this way only because of him. He knew and got her like nobody else did and now he also knew that it was true as cheeky but incredibly perfect as it sounded - that they were only themselves when they were with each other.

Oh, well... Now I'm completely exhausted myself because I actually worked on this the WHOLE DAY! It's a lot longer than I expected... and so damn cheeky... Urgh.
Yeah, if you write it the second time, it's doesn't sound anywhere near as good as the first one.

Do me a very big favour and leave some feedback for me to know your opinion (if you've even come this far...) ^^
And if you liked it, don't forget to vote XD
