Chapter 30: Mystery

Azure grunted with effort as he climbed the stairs. He was carrying Diancie and the Jewel Pokémon was not light. Ember was concerned, it looked like he was struggling.

"Want me to take over?" She asked gently.

Sweat poured down Azure's face and he strained with effort. "No... I'm right."

Ember had to laugh. Azure had been like this as long as she'd known him, stubborn as a Snorlax. Once his mind was made up, he wouldn't budge.

They struggled up the last flight of stairs and found themselves back in Mewtwo's tower. Azure groaned as he gently placed Diancie down. He collapsed into a sitting position and Ember laughed again.

"Kin, take a good look at your father. That's what happens when you don't listen to a girl. Always do as Evie tells you."

Evie laughed while Kin frowned.

"Very true Ember." A soft voice rang out. "Words of wisdom."

Turning towards the sound of the voice they spotted Mew and Mewtwo flying towards them.

Mewtwo landed and pulled Azure to his feet before shaking his paw.

"Azure, it's been too long."

"Agreed."

"How've you been?"

"Let's see... For the past sixteen years Ember and I have been encased in crystal, but now we're out so that's good. I hear you've met my son."

"Hey Mewtwo, how's it going?" Kin asked.

"You two are related? I'm not surprised, but what're you doing here?"

"Same as last time," answered Ember.

"We need to find the girl or someone who can replace her, at least temporarily," said Azure.

"Ah, I see. Well, since you disappeared last time we kept looking. We gave up finding the girl a long time ago, but we did find something that might help," said Mewtwo.

"What is it?" asked Evie.

Mew flew around the room and giggled happily. "As you know, this dungeon leads to the planet's core. This dungeon maintains the balance of our world, but it's not the only one. We discovered another dungeon. It exists on the other side of the world, directly opposite to this one. We believe that the two dungeons are linked somehow."

Azure's eyes lit up. "Thank you. Thank you so much. Now we have a lead. Mew, Mewtwo, can you two care for Diancie? We'll be back as soon as we can."

"No problem, it'll be fun!" Mew giggled.

Mewtwo nodded. "We'll take care of things here. Good luck to you."

With that, they turned briskly and began hurrying to the door.

Mewtwo sighed. "Azure! Aren't you forgetting something?"

Azure raised a confused eyebrow.

Mewtwo groaned. "The directions? Sail West from Tranquil Town and you'll find the dungeon. It is a volcanic island known as World's Fall."

Kin froze. "World's Fall?"

"You know it?" Asked Evie.

"It's where Stoutland found me..."

Soul groaned and hit her head with a book. "Bored. Bored. Boring. Bored."

Kira smacked her head against the table. "Boring. Boring. Bored. Boring."

Twigs' eyes scanned through the book. "Come on you two, we can stop soon. Just a little longer."

"Why am I even here?" Whined Soul. "I'm part of Team Eve too! I should've gone with them."

"You're here because only four Pokémon can enter a dungeon at a time. Of-course we could've divided into teams and entered the dungeon separately, but then who would be doing this?"

Soul groaned again. "Gardevoir. Do you know how many books she read today? Practically the whole library!"

"Yeah, she's a reading machine," agreed Kira.

"You two should be ashamed of yourselves."

Kira and Soul just rolled their eyes. Soul lay on the table and Kira rested her head on it. Around them numerous were stacked in high piles. They were in a secluded corner of the library; there was no windows and after hours of research they'd lost track of time.

Delis poked his head around a bookcase; spotting the Snivy, Torchic and Turtwig.

"Hey!" Delis called loudly.

Soul started and fell from the table. Groaning, she rubbed her head and stood up.

"I've been looking for you three," said Delis. "The others are back. We're heading for dinner."

Before Delis had finished speaking Soul and Kira had sprinted past him and out of the library. Delis' jaw dropped. He spun slowly in a confused circle. "Where'd they go?"

Twigs chuckled. "Come on, let's go."

Delis was still confused; he'd never seen a Pokémon move that fast and he wasn't sure that he actually had seen it. Gallade puzzled over this until he arrived at Spinda's café. Sitting around a table was Kin, Evie, Soul, Kira, Az, Em and Gardevoir.

Sitting down, Twigs looked expectantly at Kin and Evie. "Find anything?"

"Maybe. There's a dungeon near Tranquil Town. Evie and I are going to check it out. Soul, you're coming with us."

Soul silently celebrated; she couldn't stand another day of research. Besides... he lives in Tranquil Town. Soul took a moment to think about him, but Evie's voice snapped her from her daydreams.

"What about you guys, find anything?"

"Not much," Sarah answered. "I discovered that Hoopa originally had quite the reputation. He was renowned for his power and his kindness. He put on shows for Pokémon and he'd do incredible things to impress others. One day he got carried away. There was an accident and a lot of Pokémon were hurt. After that he was labelled dangerous and Pokémon began avoiding him. He was alone since then, at least until he met our mystery girl. All he wants is a friend, if we teach him not to overdo it he may stop fighting us."

"Groovy," said Azure. "Good work all round. Now, onto more important matters, dinner!"

******

Kin sighed as he flopped backwards onto his bed. Evie crawled into bed beside him and cradled herself against his side. "What's wrong?" She asked.

Soul's quiet snoring filled the room as Evie waited for a response.

"I'm just worried. That dungeon... I'm scared it'll trigger something in me and I'll snap. I don't want to hurt you. Just promise me you'll be careful."

Evie giggled and licked his cheek. "Ever since this started you've been tense. Don't worry. Just you, me and Soul. Everything'll work out."

Kin chuckled. "I know. You're right."

"When am I not?"

Kin hugged her tight. Neither of them noticed that Soul's snoring had stopped.

"Oh, you two are so cute!" Squealed Soul. "Just the three of us again, yay! I've missed us."

Kin laughed despite himself. A sly grin crossed Evie's face.

"Hey, Soul," Evie called in a sing-song voice. "You helped us get together, we'd be happy to return the favour."

Soul was confused. "What do you mean?"

"Oh, I just thought, you know, because we're going to Tranquil Town tomorrow and a certain Poochyena lives there."

Soul's blush was so bright it was nearly visible in the darkness. She didn't speak again after that.

Evie laughed. "Night Soul, love you."

Kin chuckled. "See you in the morning Soul."

With that they closed their eyes and embraced the sweet temptation of sleep. Soul on the other hand was still blushing and thinking about Levi. Eventually her thoughts turned to dreams and her eyes drifted closed.

Standing atop a familiar hill, Kin smiled down on Tranquil Town.

"Well, there it is."

"Yay!" Cheered Soul.

"We'll get settled and prepare this afternoon. Tomorrow we head out to the dungeon," said Kin.

"Fun," Evie replied.

They walked steadily towards town. Evie had saddle bags slung either side of her. Kin had a bag strapped over his shoulder. Arriving in the town square, it didn't take long to spot a familiar face.

"Kin! Evie!"

Turning towards the voice the trio saw a Deerling and Espurr running quickly towards them.

"Summer! Ez!" Cried Evie.

Embracing each other the girls all laughed happily.

"I've missed you two!" Said Evie, "How've you been?"

"Great!" Laughed Deerling. "You could never guess that the town was only recently rebuilt. It's like it was never destroyed in the first place!"

"Except..."

Evie looked at Ez confused. "Except? Except what?"

"Stoutland retired. Mr. Simisage is the Principal now."

This bit of news intrigued Kin. "Stoutland retired? Why?"

"No one knows," answered Deerling.

"Does he still live here?"

"Yeah, he still lives in the same place. He often goes for walks up the hill or to the beach."

"Okay, thanks. Why don't you guys catch up. I gotta go see Stoutland. Soul, who you going with?"

Soul's attention was divided, she was locked in an intense staring competition with a Poochyena who was standing across the square. Kin laughed, he gently pushed Soul towards Levi.

"Go have fun. I'll meet you both later at Spinda's café."

With that Kin walked towards old Stoutland's house while Evie talked to Summer and Ez and Soul chatted up Levi.

Walking through the square, Kin realised Deerling was right: The town was identical to how it was before, save for some minor improvements. Hurrying along, Kin quickly arrived at Stoutland's house. He knocked on the door and waited. After a second or two the old dog answered the door.

"Kin," Stoutland said in surprise. "It's been awhile my friend. Please, come in."

Doing as he was told Kin walked inside. Seating himself on a plush couch he watched as Stoutland lay down upon a bed of hay. The old Pokémon had streaks of grey all throughout his soft coat.

"I heard you retired as principle."

"Yes, I did."

"Why?"

"I'm old."

"Oh."

"How have you been Kin?"

"Uh, fine I guess. Evie and I are dating now, that's good."

"Oh, congratulations."

"Thank you. Stoutland... I have to do something tomorrow that I'm really not looking forward too."

"And what's that?"

"I must return to the Mystery Dungeon World's Fall."

"Ah, I see. You seek information about the dungeon?"

"Yes, please, whatever you can tell me."

"Well, the dungeon is a volcanic island. It's full of powerful fire and dark type Pokémon that attack relentlessly. There're 31 floors. The farther down you go the greater the pressure of the dungeon. It feels as if the weight of the world is crushing down upon you. Kin, that dungeon is incredibly dangerous. I trust you have good reason to go there."

"I do."

"Alright but be careful."

"I will. Thank you Stoutland."

"Of-course."

Kin looked out the window and saw the sun setting upon Tranquil Town. He stood, deciding it was time he meet up with Soul and Evie.

"I should be going."

"Right, good luck."

Kin smiled and nodded as he opened the door and walked out. Golden light bathed Tranquil Town beautifully. It brought a smile to Kin's face and reminded him, he must enjoy what he has; who knows how much longer it'll last?

*******

Phew, we finally escaped them!

Soul: Who?

Me: Az, Em, Sarah and Delis. Not gonna lie, I don't really like them as characters.

Kin: What!? Why not?!

Me: Because I'm trying to tell your's and Evie's story here. They just kinda... hijacked everything for a few chapters there. I like the Eve Trio. Dang, that's a cool name.

Soul: It is cool. Should we start a band?

Evie: No, that's too much.

Kin: Seriously? Neither of you have anything to say to Billy?

Evie: Honestly Kin... no. Sorry. I like the Eve Trio too. I'm still not fully comfortable around your parents and I like being open and honest with you.

Soul: That's cute. I was right to ship Kevin.

Kin: *Facepaws* You know what? I'm just gonna say the outro. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! Check in later for new updates... uh... Read and Review... and... have a good life! Bye.
