Freshman year (part 7)
Homecoming was in about eight days, exactly next Saturday. Honesty, Dawn couldn't be more nervous the closer it got to her, she was going with PAUL. Well, only if her father didn't find out. Her mom is the only other person she told, and she was so happy for her. Dawn remembered how her mom had cried a few tears in happiness, she was so happy for her. Her mom was the best person on earth, she trusted her with everything, and her unconditional love was what kept Dawn alive.
Right now Dawn was laying in her moms car resting while her mom was driving. They had a crappy small car, but at least it was something. Way better than being at home with her abusive father, who was probably enraged by the two of them gone.
Tonight was the homecoming football game, and Dawn had to go since her friends really wanted her to. She didn't want to let them down, especially Paul, who was playing on the varsity team. She'd been to all the games so far to watch him perform, but none of her friends knew that, not even Serena, Misty, Leaf, or May. Dawn had just went by herself and made sure nobody could recognize her.
Dawn sighed as she closed her eyes, thinking back to some moments that have occurred. Today they had announced in an assembly for the freshman class of who had been voted as a prince, princess, King and queen for homecoming. The Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors had already had their assembly. She started replaying of how Drew and May had been chosen for the freshman class as the top King and Queen of homecoming, along with a few others, and that had included Gary as a prince, but also Paul as a prince......and the school paired Hilda to be the princess that walks with him. She remembered how she felt emotions waver inside her, feeling tears flood her eyes as she had watched him walk with her across the gym. She'd never be that pretty, and she was jealous of it all. She'd been jealous of Hilda, how she got to link arms with Paul while she sat in the crappy bleachers.
Dawn had been so happy for May and Drew, it was obvious that they liked each other, or probably even loved. Gary was so siked, so Misty had hit him on the head with her mallet.
"Dawn, we're just about here at the football game. I'll meet you here later okay?" Her mom said to her as Dawn nodded boringly, wishing that her friends didn't know she would be going.
"Yeah mom, no need to worry. I'll be okay." Dawn replied with a grin on her face as her mom smiled back and shook her head "That's when I worry the most dear. Do you need any money?" Dawn rapidly shook her head no, she knew that mom wasn't doing so well on cash these days.
Her mom sighed, then still shoved ten dollars into Dawns black flimsy zip up sweatshirt pocket. Dawn frowned as the car came to a stop, signaling that it was time to leave.
"Be safe Dawn, I love you."
"Thanks mom, love you too."
Dawn closed the door and watched her mom smile, then start to drive down the road to who knows where. She felt the soft smile on her face disappear into her blank face as she started walking with her hood up, facing the ground. She memorized her shoes by heart, every dirty spot, every rip, every hole, everything. Dawn quickly sped walked to the very corner top of the huge bleachers and watched the cheerleaders and football players get set up.
There was a few other people, but it was still really early until the game started. There was Ursula and her followers along with the rest of the cheerleaders checking out the guys as usual, commenting on how hot they looked. Dawn looked out at the football team and watched them stretch out, looking for someone in particular as always. He was number 5, which was her favorite number too. She saw him warming up, throwing footballs to wide receivers as usual again, and couldn't help but just keep her eyes only on him. She ignored the comments from Ursula about how hot he was or their high pitched screaming and giggling, honestly she didn't care anymore about them.
Later, Dawn saw a whole lot more people start showing up, and since their football field was one of the largest fields ever for a high school, there were already hundreds of students filling up the endless bleachers. She sighed when she saw how pretty May, Leaf, Misty and Serena were. She couldn't ever match up to their level no matter what, she wasn't meant to be with them, they were absolutely the perfect friends who were absolutely drop dead gorgeous to any guy. Yeah, Dawn envied her friends for being so pretty, but she was also HAPPY for them. They all deserved so much, and all Dawn wanted to see was them succeeding in life, even if it meant her stepping out of their way. She wondered why they cared for her so much, how she was even a friend to them still. Dawn was just a burden to everyone, and decided to stay in her seat instead of going up to them like she said she would.
With Paul, he was just about ready to smash their rivals; it was the homecoming game, they couldn't loose no matter what. He took a quick gulp of water, then walked to the bleachers where May had told him they would be there. He rolled his eyes from Ursula screaming and trying to grab his attention like all the other cheerleaders were, plus many more girls from the freshman class trying to flirt as well. Paul ignored them and approached May along with Misty, Leaf, Serena, and-.......she wasn't there. Paul felt his heart collapse inside his chest, feeling it ache. May had secretly told him that Dawn would be there, and he was pretty siked, but of course he couldn't tell anyone. His adrenaline instantly slowed down from being pumped up, and the tiniest bit of bounce in his steps were long gone from the absence of that Troublesome girl.
"Hey Paul! You ready?" Misty excitedly said as she fist bumped Paul, who had a frown on his face.
"Sure." Paul grunted out, a hint of anger in his voice that was obvious enough for all the girls to notice. The four quickly glanced at each other with slightly worried and sad faces, then turned back to Paul, who was gritting his jaws together so tightly they could see the strong outline of his jaws.
"Where is she." Paul angrily said, demanding them more than questioning. He looked straight into Mays eyes, who were filled with sadness. He could tell just by her eyes that it wasn't their faults.
"I don't know. We've looked for her but she hasn't showed up, I'm sorry." May sadly said, looking down at her feet. Leaf put a comforting hand on her shoulder, hoping it would help somehow. She felt the same way along with Serena and Misty.
"No, it's just-....whatever, I'm going back." Paul gruffly said in his monotone voice, then quickly turning back and jogging to the field, feeling all of his spirits completely gone. Maybe she didn't show up because it was the homecoming game, and during halftime he has to walk across the field along with the other people who were voted, but it wasn't just that. He had to walk with that whore Hilda, one of those nasty pain in the ass bitches. He honestly was feeling embarrassed inside because everyone knew how she was a slut, and he was definitely most NOT honored to walk arm in arm with her. Hell no. He'd rather walk across with that Blu- what was he thinking?! He quickly clenched his fists and stopped his trail of thoughts about it for a second, but the memories still came back.
Paul remembered in the assembly how he had sat next to Dawn, since she was alone, and when they called his name along with Hilda's, he looked directly in her eyes and saw so much emotion in them, how she had almost let a tear slip from her eye but somehow kept it in. After the assembly, he tried finding her but she was nowhere in sight; he didn't see her for the rest of the day. Not even in the classes that they shared, she was gone. He wished she didn't avoid him, but he hadn't seen the blunette girl anywhere, and it honestly made him feel fucking scared and worried for her. What if she was hurt? That girl could be ANYWHERE by now, he just hoped she was safe somehow.
Paul angrily growled at himself as he shook his head as he stood on the sidelines watching the game. He was so out of his mentality game; Dawn was all he could think about. Nothing else, not how just now their rivals got a too easy touchdown from the horrible defense. That girl was on his mind, and he didn't even know why. Why was she always on his mind, why did she invade his thoughts? She wasn't like the other girls, who were trying their best to look good everyday, who cared about their appearance to impress the other guys, like himself. She's different, but he couldn't understand the feelings inside him right now.
Paul was so spaced out while staring at the game he didn't even realize Gary had been snapping his gloved hands in front of his face.
"Hey Pauly! You in there? Ey Paul, bro! PAUL!!!"
Paul felt a hand smack his helmet from the back, snapping him out of his thoughts to see Gary raising an eyebrow while smirking at him. "Paul, dude! You're way outta your own head bro. Something on yo mind?" Gary asked the plum haired quarterback who shook his head in response, then looked back at the game.
"Paul, I know something is on your mind. Hmm....is it anything about the opposite gender? Cause if it is then I wanna know who's the lucky chick!" Gary laughed as Paul punched him in the shoulder.
"Shut the fuck up Oak, I'm not feeling it tonight."
"Damn, this girl has to be the shit if you ain't even on yo game! You'll get back into the swing of things soon 'Mr. Rude Ass thats gotta chick on his mind'!" Gary punched back Paul in the shoulder while cracking up, then walking away toward the other side of the sideline. Paul gritted his jaw together and clenched his hands into fists and turned his attention to the scoreboard. It was 14-3, with them only scoring a field goal that Trip had kicked. Paul didn't really care for Trip, he was all friends and shit with Hilda, Ursula, and them rest of them.
Paul really hated Trip and he always did. He thinks he hell of a lot better than him in everything; football, basketball, baseball, track, Pokemon battles, everything. The sad thing is that they were fucking cousins, and both of them literally hated each other with a burning passion. Not like Paul cares though.
Paul anxiously waited for his turn to be the quarterback, since their senior QB right now wasn't really that good. He watched right when their QB called the play, the game starting again. He saw the other team blitz, so at least two guys came charging at the QB, then sacking him almost violently. The play stopped, and all the guys got back up except the QB, who was on the field gripping his right ankle in pain.
After a few minutes, he had to ride on one of the golf carts to the medical trainer, and then his coach approached Paul.
"Go get 'em Paul, we need this comeback."
Paul only grunted in response as he ran out on the field and huddled with his teammates.
