Okay.. so to start, I'm going to give a general overview of the purpose of this book. This guide, is a book made by pros in pokemon for noobs in pokemon. It was made with the understanding, that while battling pokemon is fun, it's actually very fustrating when every fight you come across is a one sided one that ends in you losing. This guide is to help you change that... and to make sure you never lose to another 5 year old's stupid Mewtwo again.
But before I get to the next chapter and start explaining a certain ettiquete that pros need to follow when they play. Take note that their are a lot of people who don't follow these rules, but try not to emulate them too much, it takes the fun out of the game.
Rule Number 1. DON'T CHEAT!! There's an application called Pokegen that allows people to create their own pokemon out of thin air in the data stream and give themselves an unlimited amount of Shiny pokemon, legendaries, six IV pokemon, and other sorts. These people only win because they take a lazy stupid shortcut, and therefore possess no real skill in this game. While you usually can't be sure if somebody is cheating or not, it's a rather low way to win a battle.. especially if you turn up with a team full of shinies, perfect IVs, and have pokemon with moves they ABSOLUTELY shouldn't be able to learn (For example: A black Rayquaza that knows V Create.. no kidding, I actually ran into one of those.)
Rule Number 2. DON'T RAGE QUIT!! If you're losing, take it like a mature gamer and either press the forfeit match option, or battle it out until your last pokemon faints, don't automatically turn off the game. While the game records the number of wins and battles you've had, and therefore by default tells the number of losses, not many people care about that.. they just want to battle and have fun, don't be embarrassed, that number can change the more you learn. By forfeiting a match, you're turning into what pokemon gamers call a Noob Coward. Because not only are you being a sore loser, you're also depriving another hard working gamer of their well earned win, something they probably worked hard on their team for. And believe it or not.. Rage Quitters are hated by Pros even more then Cheaters.
There are only a few instances in which you can Rage Quit. The first is if your opponent is using all Uber Legendaries, and you aren't. That means they're being completely unfair.. however, if you're using Ubers as well, this exception goes out the window. The second is, if you're ABSOLUTELY SURE that your opponent is cheating. And I mean ABSOLUTELY SURE!! For all you know, your opponent could be a no lifer whose somehow obtained an entire team of shinies through serious hard work. However, if you find a Chansey that knows Oblivion Wing and Judgement.. well.. yeah, Rage Quit away, that idiot deserves it.
Rule Number 3. NO UBER LEGENDARIES!! Perhaps the most well known of all competitive Ettiquette rules. Pokemon which have insane stats and legends behind them, and are regarded like gods, Dialga, Palkia, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Ho'oh, Lugia, Deoxys, Darkrai and etc. Unless your opponent uses them too, this is an absolute NO NO!! For one thing, Legendary Pokemon have stats that are insane enough so that noobs can overcome pros.. given that they're smart enough..usually not. And some of these legendaries require people spend an insane amount of money to get.. whether they have to buy the second version for another 40 bucks, or they have to drive another 200 miles to Game Stop for the event, if you think having a lot of big legends make you look like a big shot.. you're wrong, it just means you either have a lot of connections, or time.. it says absolutely nothing about your skill. And of course, here's a legendary, which is the absolute god of all NOPEs... Arceus. There's nothing that pisses off people more.. then an Arceus.. and considering how difficult it is to even get one.. usually the ones you'll encounter online, or recieve in trade are cheated, making it even more of a NOPE, especially if you recieve one in trade.. no way somebody's going to just trade away their Arceus unless they have a special place where they can just get more.
There is one exception to the legendary rule.. and those are the Pseudo Legendaries. They're the Legendary Pokemon whose stats are about the same as a normal pokemon, and therefore are allowed in official tournaments. Pokemon like Latios, Heatran, Thundarus, Suicune..
An easy way to tell which is Pseudo and which is an Uber, is by checking the ban lists online for official tournaments. The Uber legendaries are always the banned pokemon, while the Psuedos will usually be allowed.
Well these are the most basic ettiquette rules. Please take note that I did not make these up.. that they have in fact, been in place ever since I first started competetive playing, don't feel down on yourself if you've broken a few of these rules, it's not the end of the world. I've broken those rules myself. Just note that it's ettiquete, not international gaming law.
And now that we've got that out of the way, I'll move on to the first step to pro gaming in Pokemon, and that's to build a Strong Team.
