Chapter 6

Melody's POV

"You're late," Mr. Hawkman snapped at us as we stepped through the door.

"I'm sorry, I had to grab my coat, and-" I struggled to find an excuse for Avery.

"And Melody had to show me the way to the room," finished Avery. I threw him a grateful glance.

"Show him the way?" Mr. Hawkman's voice was unnaturally soft. I swallowed and nodded.

"But why? You've been here a week, and you have me three times a week. Shouldn't it be drilled in your head by now?" Mr. Hawkman asked.

"I forget easily," lied Avery. I nodded in agreement.

"Sit down," Mr. Hawkman snapped. Avery and I hastened to obey.

                                   *******

"That was close," Avery said. I nodded and leaned against my locker. We were getting ready for dismissal. I pulled on my coat and grabbed my bag. "I'll see you tomorrow!" I called over my shoulder.

I walked home briskly. It was cold out, and I wanted to get to the TARDIS quickly.

Once I arrived, I fumbled with the key for the TARDIS. Once I got it in my numb fingers, I jammed it into the lock. I pushed open the door and stepped in.

Captain Jack Harkness had left us for good. He had to work for Torch wood, and he couldn't stay any longer. I wasn't complaining though; on the contrary, I was happy. I removed my coat and slung it over the chair. I flopped down on it and opened up my backpack. I fished out my homework. I opened my textbook and began to work.

I had just finished when Dad came in. "Hey," I said, putting my stuff back into my bag, then looked up at him. "Any news?"

"Nah, no sign of them," he replied. "No sign at all...."

"Yes, I got that the first time, Dad," I said, joining his side. "No sign... but where could they have gone?"

"I don't know Melody, I just don't know..." Dad's voice trailed off. I didn't like that, but Dad straightened up. "It's late. You should be getting to bed, Melody."

I could tell Dad wanted to be left alone, so I left.

Avery's POV

"Hey," Melody said once she saw me. I nodded, and we walked into school together.

After a while, I realized Melody was looking at me. "What's up? You're quiet today."

"Yeah, I'm just tired," I yawned to prove my point, but I knew Melody didn't buy it. I was really thinking about the Weeping Angels, but I didn't dare mention them for fear someone might be listening.

A couple of Melody's friends came up and dragged her away, leaving me alone. I didn't care. I was always shy and quiet, and Melody was my only friend. But today, I wanted my solitude.

I made it to my first class just when the bell rang. I slid in my seat when the teacher came in. Ms. Alberts was nice, but strict and had no room for nonsense. She got down for business right away by checking if we did our homework. I realized I left mine at home. When she approached my desk, she said, "Well, Avery?"

"I don't have it. I left it at home," I mumbled.

She tutted. "It's a zero. I don't permit laziness in my class Mr. Avery, so make sure you bring it in next class." Then she winked and continued on checking other people's homework. I could feel my cheeks burning and people's eyes trained on me. I burrowed my face in my arms and wished for the class to start.

Melody's POV

After first period, came gym. I was excited when I found out Avery was in my class.

Okay, this isn't love, just friendship. We're just friends. Just had to make that clear. I am not in love with Avery.

Anyways, we were shooting baskets when I saw Mr. Hawkman watching us. I gritted my teeth and tried to ignore him, but I was distracted, so when I shot the ball, it hit the rim of the hoop and smacked me in the face. I recoiled clutching my nose. I didn't have time to recover when another basketball, I don't know where it came from, hit me in the back of the head and I fell forward, hitting my face on the floor and was knocked unconscious.

Mr. Hawkman's POV

I watched the Melody girl fall forward and I knew the plan was success. I even offered to help get her to the nurse's office.

Once we were there, I dumped her on a cot, not bothering to be careful. "Got one," I told the nurse.

"And the other? The boy?" she asked.

"He'll join soon. I promise that," I said.

"You sure he got it?" she asked anxiously. I nodded. "He got the milk carton with it."

"You sure?" the nurse asked skeptically.

"I'm bloody sure!" I snapped. "If I didn't need you, I'd erase your memory and dump you on the streets for the Angels."

"I had to make sure," she replied. I gritted my teeth and said, "Once the boy joins, they both go into the room. Got it?"

She nodded. "Got it."

Avery's POV

All of a sudden, I felt woozy. The world spun around me as I tried to get a grip on the basketball and on consciousness, but I soon fell forward like Melody and passed out.
