The Start of the Assesement

Bluepaw and Hopepaw being siblings, lol. Art by me!

"Your warrior assessments are tomorrow,"  Tumblesoar announced, gaze wandering over Bluepaw and Hopepaw as they sat in front of him, and Bluepaw's mentor, Pinestalk. "When do you two want to take them?"
"Day," both apprentices answered instantly, and confidently. Bluepaw shot a venom-laced glare at his sister. "I said it first," he hissed through tightly gritted teeth, lips curled up menacingly. Hopepaw started at him, unamused. "We said it at the same time, pigeon-brain."

Pinestalk sighed and shook his head. "Both of you can take it in the daytime. You two are siblings. Can't you act like it for, like half a second? Please? Stars and sky, you two are at each other's throats like wolves. Pointedly, Hopepaw turned away from the taller blue tom, who rolled his eyes.

"Good enough. You both will take your assessments starting at dawn and ending as soon as the sun sets. You have to gather as much prey as possible in that time. Get a good sleep, eat before you leave in the morning, and set out early to make sure you have lots of time." Pinestalk paused for a moment before continuing.

"There are a few rules. One, you may not start until the sun clears the horizon, and you must be on the cliff at sunset with your prey—two, no crossing any borders. Three, any prey that is already dead is off-limits. And, no accepting prey from passing patrols. Four, if another cat is stalking a piece of prey, it is theirs; not yours. And five- you can't eat the prey you gather." Hopepaw nodded, and so did Bluepaw.

"Tumblesoar and I will be watching at all times. If you break a rule, we will see," he meowed, voice stern. "Mistakes happen, but just know we have full control over whether you become warriors or not. Dismissed!"
With a flick of his bushy dark ginger tail, Pinestalk padded away. Tumblesoar nodded to the two apprentices, before doing the same.

Bluepaw let out one more ill-tempered growl and stalked toward the prey hole. Hopepaw, having already eaten earlier in the evening, headed straight for her nest. For the hotter season, she'd tossed her rabbit pelt out, instead filling the nest with cool leaves, flower petals and a few feathers in order to not overheat. But now, as the weather cooled at night, she realized she ought to get her warmer bedding back.

Hopepaw curled into her nest, snugly pressed into it. She was nearly outgrowing it. After closing her eyes, tossing and turning, and circling and re-adjusting herself many times, she found that she couldn't sleep.

Ever since Screechpaw's death,  nearly three moons prior, Hopepaw's sleep had never been good. Her nightmares had quieted until they only occurred once in a while, but she had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. She often either overslept after a night of insomnia or woke up much too early for no apparent reason. I need to rest before my assessment. She thought urgency creeping into her mind. If I'm half asleep all day, I'll fail. She squeezed her eyes tighter shut and forced her breathing to steady and slow down.

But just as she felt the weightless tug of sleep pulling at her limbs, beaconing her to drift away, Bluepaw stomped loudly into the Apprentice's den. Hopepaw side-eyed him as he settled in his nest. For a moment, he said nothing, and she resumed her attempt to sleep. Then, as soon as she closed her eyes, he spoke. "Stay away from me tomorrow."
"What?"
"I said, stay away from me. I can't have you messing up my hunting."
"Like I'd ever want to be around you," Hopepaw scoffed. "You're about as fun to talk to as a wolverine with nettles up its-"
"Shut it."
"You're the one who started this conversation. Have fun with your hunt; I'm sure whatever you catch will impress Emeraldshatter." She drawled, voice dripping with sarcasm.

Bluepaw huffed and turned away from his sister. Mercifully, when she closed her eyes again, sleep folded its ebony wings around her, and swept her out into a dreamless slumber.

Just before dawn, Tumblesoar woke Hopepaw and Bluepaw up. Hopepaw felt almost jittery with nerves; before this moment, she hadn't thought much about her assessment. Hadn't cared. Had pushed it to the back of her mind. But now, reality hit her straight in the muzzle. Today was her warrior assessment. Objectively, one of the most important days of her life.

She pushed past Tumblesoar and headed to the fresh-kill hole. There, last night's prey lay stale and musty in the stone dip, and Hopepaw wrinkled her nose. The freshest thing there looked to be a squirrel, so she grabbed it and settled down to quickly eat. The sun would be breaking the horizon any minute, and she needed all the time she could possibly get. Hunting isn't my strong suit, she thought. I just hope I can catch some decent stuff.

As she gulped down the squirrel, she didn't hear the pawsteps as they hit the stone behind her. "Hopepaw?" Gentlebreeze's soft voice filled her ears, and Hopepaw nearly jumped. She turned her head and saw her mother, eyes bright with excitement and pride. "Good luck today," she mewed. "Thanks, Mother." Gentlebreeze let out a sigh and touched her nose to her daughter's forehead. "I'm proud of you, Hopepaw. You're so strong; you've overcome so much before you've even received your warrior name. It's... unreal. I know you'll pass."
"I hope so."
"You will." She insisted. Before Hopepaw could answer, Tumblesoar called out to her. "Hopepaw, it's nearly dawn! Your assessment will start soon." She swallowed the last of the squirrel and stood up, padding toward her mentor. Tumblesoar looked more nervous than Hopepaw felt, switching his weight from paw to paw, eyes darting. Bluepaw, neatly groomed and acting haughty as usual, met them near the tunnel with his mentor by his side. The two warriors nodded to each other and began the ascent out of camp.

A chill whispered through Hopepaw's fur as she stood, waiting for the sun to rise. The sky was ghostly gray, and tinged with delicate pink near the horizon, the heavens streaked with a rosy glow, the colour the wild roses had been before the change of the season had withered their silken petals. Tumblesoar repeated the rules again, making sure both apprentices could recite them before finally falling silent. For a moment, Hopepaw wondered why he was so nervous- then, she remembered his story about Soaringpaw. She had died on her assessment day, in Leafloss; The anniversary of her untimely demise was probably only around two moons away.

After a few painful minutes of waiting, the sun broke the distant horizon, a ball of crimson flame. "Remember the rules!" Tumblesoar cried as Hopepaw fled down the mountain, Bluepaw close to her paws. The cool morning air filled her lungs and ran through her long cream-coloured fur like water. She felt as though she could fly, paws skimming the ground. So faint that she could barely hear it, Tumblesoar's voice hailed one last plea before any hope of hearing him was lost.

"Be careful..."

Fun Fact: From BleakClan's camp, down to their border, it's a 20-40 minute trip, depending on travelling speed. The mountain they reside on is not incredibly tall, and they do not live at the very peak; their camp is on one of the smaller peaks. The whole territories of all four Clans are high in elevation.

Sorry about the short chapter, and the infrequent updates! I've been away.
