In Glory there are rules one must follow if they become a Shadowlay. As for all things rules can be unfair. Usually, to become a Shadowlay you get sent back to your own dimension to protect someone special. By special I mean paranormal, magical, very smart, or the broken. The broken are the ones that want to die, that have sever depression, or horrible families. I say that Shadowlays are guardians the protect the ones who need it.
Now, you may wonder how the HELL do paranormal ones need it. In my world demons are evil but their is the select few that have some type of humanity despite being a demon. Vampires are half demons, so not all of them are murderers. Werewolves are cursed and Wolfbloods are creatures created by magic.
Then there are the paranormal that isn't known and is made up by me. Poison Apples, Goldenhearts, and Golden Apples. To know more about them I suggest another complete book "Addy Poison Apple" and it's (incomplete) sequel "Addy Golden Apple".
For very smart people they are protect because they have the power to change a world even if they don't know it.
As for magical I mean, mythical creatures that are human or part human.

When a Shadowlay goes back to their demotion they may be given the chance to see a loved one they missed alive, but the thing is that loved one, will not recognize them if they are in a demotion like we live in of news and technology. The reason for this is because they most change their appearance so a dead person isn't just walking around especially if they're anywhere near technology that and record them.
If they are in a medieval dimension they can be them selves.

Anyways if they choose themselves and their past over the ones they are protecting more than likely they will put the one they're protecting at risk of dying. Their missions are complete when they know the ones they are protecting are safe.
The rules they follow are
1. Protect who you are assigned to
2. Make sure they don't know your past
3. Make sure your past, bad or good, doesn't effect your protection to the person.
4. If you fail you will wait 6 months before you can try an be a Shadowlay again or choose heaven or hell.
5. Never fall in love
6. Always be on guard outside of glory.

These are the most important rules of Shadowlays.
