One Bite, One Shard
IZUKU MIDORIYA HAS DONE EVERYTHING to keep a positive attitude towards quirks and the chance of him being a hero but looking at the note in his hands the bold words REJECTED staring back at him he didn't know what he had been believing his whole life. It was only then that he realized how worthless his attempts have been. No matter what he does he can never be a hero. If he doesn't have a quirk he can't be a hero that's just the way the world works.
"Hey Deku, heard you didn't make it in." Bakugou Katsuki mocked ripping the letter from his hand. Deku sighed turning around just as the letter turns to ashes in Kacchan's hand. His cronies laughed along with him, Bakugou poking Deku in the forehead. "I told you, you could never become a hero. You're just a stupid quirkless nerd. I'm surprised you even tried to enter." He blew the ashes on Deku's messy green hair.
Deku having enough stood up grabbing his bag off the back of his chair walking past Bakugou who grabbed the back of his shirt.
"I'm not done with you yet." Bakugou sneered, the collar of Deku's shirt slowly catching fire. Deku pulled his hand off before his shirt went up in flames, unaffected by the heat of his hands.
"Well I am." Deku said hopelessly, without looking back and exited the classroom, Bakugou screaming out curses and threats behind him.
Deku shoved his hands into the pockets of his uniform pants as he enviously eyed the other people in the hallway who all had quirks giving then unlimited access to the things this world provided for them.
They could become hero's like his idol All Might, they could save people with a smile giving people hope despite their crazy world that's filled with heroes and villains while he would just be an ordinary person. Not even ordinary since almost everyone had a quirk.
Deku quickly wiped the tears that were forming at his eyes as he stopped at the fountain near the entrance of the school yanking off his bag.
I won't be needing these anymore. He thought as he brought out countless journals filled with his research on quirks throwing them into the water watching as the pages crumbled, the ink running off the pages turning the clear blue water into a murky gray.
Why did I even try? Even mom knew I can't become a hero. Everyone knew except stupid Deku.
He walked home people walking past him all using their quirks as if boasting how he didn't have any. News helicopters soared through the sky as another hero raced through the city to catch the evil villains. Deku scoffed, how could he be so stupid to believe he could be as great as All Might. He turned the corner wanting to get away from the large crowd and took a shortcut home.
As he was walking he heard people speaking their voices getting louder as he moved closer. Deku slowed down looking out from behind his small corner, two young men standing in the alleyway near a trash can speaking to someone behind it. Deku unable to move away tuned in on their conversation.
"T-tomura-San give me some time. I just need more time t-then I'll be able to defeat All Might." A weak, trembling voice begged from behind the trash can.
Deku froze at the name of his idol. They must be villains! Sweat fell from his forehead to the ground, Deku trying to stop his pounding heart from giving away his presence. He glanced back from his corner, eyeing the pale blue-haired young man, dismembered hands covering his face and arms. They must be apart of his quirk. The man scratched his neck anxiously Deku noticing the countless other scars, signs of constant scratching.
"You know how much I hate wasting time and unfortunately you've being doing just that. I hate hate hate people wasting my time." He tilted his head, his voice quite bored.
"Kurogiri?" The young man of the name Tomura asked, looking to his accomplice who looks like a vortex of sorts, his head inside a metal-like container.
Deku had never seen quirks like theirs before which made him even more scared. He should leave but he's frozen in place, he was curious yet terrified. He had no quirk so if something went wrong he was as good as dead.
"Yes, Tomura." Kurogiri answered.
"Do we need more subjects for another Nomu?"
"Not that I know of," Kurogiri replied brushing off the grime from his suit. Tomura nodded taking a step forward, hiding behind the trashcan not allowing Deku to see what was happening but he had a big enough imagination to imagine what was happening as screams of agony and begs of mercy filled the alleyway.
Deku's face paled as Tomura returned out from the other side of the trashcan brushing off a gray-like dirt off his shirt sleeve. Deku, finally able to move, walked backwards slowly tripping over a can, falling down. Everything went silent as the only sound was Deku's racing heart pounding in his chest.
Adrenaline raced through his blood as footsteps echoed in the alleyway, hearing them come closer and closer to where poor Deku laid. Deku quickly scrambled up leaving his bag behind as Tomura appeared from corner tilting his head, scratching his neck.
"Hmm just an eavesdropping child," Deku got up just at that moment turning around and running back to the entrance of the alleyway to the Main Street hoping to lose them in the crowd. He glanced back just for a second noticing how Kurogiri wasn't there and looked back just as he fell through a large portal.
Everything completely black.
~*~*~*~
Deku woke up in cold sweat, the last events coming back to him in one sitting. He was captured by the villains! He doesn't know how but they did. His surroundings were completely black as if he had his eyes closed. A light shone above him, Deku wincing at the harsh light as he looked down realizing his arms were tied to the chair. He scanned the area noticing something moving towards him in the darkness. Deku trembled in his seat, pushing himself back into the chair as far as possible but his legs were also tied.
He was going to die. He thought terrified of the idea. What would mom think? Who would be there for her? How would she feel? He thought. The figure moved closer, their body hidden by the shadows Deku unable to look directly at their face and looked at where he believed their chest was.
"So you're the young hero who was eavesdropping on Tomura?" The person asked rhetorically, his deep voice making Deku believe it was a man. Deku swallowed hard before speaking.
"I-i'm not a hero." He said cowardly before gasping as the man's fist collided into his cheek, pain swelling in his face before surging through his whole body. He choked a sob unable to scream out in pain his hair covering his eyes as he eyed the floor, his head spinning.
"Don't lie to me," the man hissed, "I hate liars. We found a journal about heroes in your bag." He grabbed Deku's chin forcefully making Deku look up at his face, bloodshot eyes staring back at him. White hair blanketing his square face.
"Now why were you eavesdropping?" He demanded. Deku tried to stop the tears that were attempting to spill from his eyes as he answered knowing that if he doesn't answer he would gain another punch.
"I-I was walking back from school and I t-took the a-alleyway as a shortcut to get home, a-and I found t-them talking. I-i couldn't walk away." The man didn't say anything giving him a chance to say more, "I'm quirkless I can't become a hero or anything."
"Then I might as well kill you now." Deku's heart jumped to his throat as he trembled completely. Why does this have to happen to me? If I had a quirk this wouldn't have happened. He thought closing his eyes, awaiting his fate.
"But you make quite useful notes." Deku opened his eyes slowly, could this be a chance of survival?
"I-i had more but I trashed them. They're unusable." The man smiled crookedly.
"But the information is in your head, isn't it?" Deku swallowed his nerves. They could rip out his brain or make a copy of all information in his head. "And if you had a quirk you could be quite useful. Your knowledge of quirks and with your own power could defeat anyone who stood in your path."
"W-what do you mean?" Deku asked curiously.
"I could give you a quirk." The man offered. Deku shaking his head, that wasn't possible but a small part of him would hoped he wasn't lying.
"B-but I thought you're born with quirks?" He asked. It was a common knowledge that all people are born with quirks, one in almost a million are born quirkless like Deku but he's never met another person like himself or heard of giving people quirks.
"There are some that can be given to people. Like passing down your power to another." The mysterious man explained, bending down to look at Deku in the eye. The colors of his eyes began to change like a kaleidoscope.
"Y-you can do that?" Deku asked becoming more intrigued by the offer despite the villain offering it.
"Yes boy. You just have to do something in return. You could get powers of unimaginable strength and enter U.A. just like you've always wanted." His voice was compelling making Deku want to believe him, everything he said was as if he could read Deku's mind. "You can get back at all the people who said you could never do it."
Images of Kacchan, his mom, and Kacchan's cronies appeared in his head. He could be a hero like he wanted. He could help people. He shook his head as a thought striked him.
"But you're a villain." Deku said wincing as the man laughed.
"I may be in the eyes of the public but who really is? Heroes are people who save people and believe they are better than the average joe and villains are people who must do what they have to, to survive. We steal because we need money. We kill because sometimes it's the only way to survive. Some of the people we think are heroes or want to, sometimes don't act like it. You must have met a person like that?" The man tilted Deku's head, Bakugou appearing in front of him.
"I'm going to call you Deku. Someone who can't do anything. You're quirkless you'll never be able to be a hero. You're nothing."
Deku grit his teeth wishing nothing more than to prove him wrong, to prove them all wrong.
"I can provide you with so much if you do just something small for me, Izuku Midoriya. You are more than Deku. I know that and you do too." Deku looking back at the man with a dazed expression, drunk on the thought of having a quirk despite it's uses.
"Do you want a quirk Izuku Midoriya?" He asked again.
"Yes. I do." Izuku responded, meaning every word. Maybe he wasn't meant to have a quirk for this reason, Izuku thought. Maybe he had to wait for this moment to finally get an amazing quirk.
He would no longer be Deku, a boy with no future.
He would be Izuku a boy, with a quirk. A boy who made a terrible mistake.
