sometimes I dream about you
and in my dreams
you're holding me

and when I wake up
my mind expects you to be 
                                                         there
next to me
when I turn over

next to me
like you used to be

and there's that moment
when my mind's trying to catch
                                                                  up
when I'm freefalling
when my hand reaches out 
to touch the sheets
beside me

and you're still not there
you're not there

and it clicks into place
and the dream fades away


but sometimes when I dream about you
my heart never catches up
for hours
for days
it forgets that you're no longer with me

it forgets

it expects you
to be right beside me
it looks for you, smiling
and returns empty handed
it cries out to me
                                     "where has he gone?"

and how do I tell it
that it was merely a dream
was it only a dream
was it only a dream?


sometimes when I remember our time together
it feels like I'm dreaming

because how could something so good
be real

and then be
                          gone
