Dead Poets Society
From a class assignment- write a love poem about something (or someone) you enjoy. We picked the object of our affections before we knew what we had to do.
I cue up Netflix
'Cause we don't have the DVD
But my family all
Laugh at me
Why do they do that? I don't know
They don't understand
The dangers of
Conformity
And how "To indeed be a God!"
I love this movie
And no one knows why I do
It makes me happy
When I feel blue
I stole that last line
From Little Eva's Locomotion
I'm going to tell you now how
This stuff came into motion
I wish I had a saxophone but
I can only play trombone
It's not as if I really wanted
To place a bet
I never tested for it-
I don't like the clarinet
It was a dark, stormy night-
Never mind, it was clear
My mom walked in the room she said
"Bee, come over here"
"I see this neat old movie that
I think you'd like to see"
And that's the story- how I found
Dead Poet's Society
I showed it to my sister-
She got bored halfway through
My mom doesn't seem to
Remember it much -
To her it's kind of new
My dad openly teases me 'cause
He thinks I'm in love with
Neil Perry
And my brother's only
Ten and a half
It's not like he'd care...ee
I think it's got something
To teach
And I know there's teachers
Out there
Who practice things that
Mr. Keating would preach
But for now who else would think
My god, that guy Cameron he's a real fink
Or birds cannot sing when they're locked up in cages
That Knox and Christine is a love lasting ages
To cry through the night till your nose gets all runny
To ask Charlie Dalton, "what's Numama mean, honey?"
Lipstick on cheeks, red lightning on chest
It wasn't the teacher who got laid to rest
What else can cause a feeling of stuck
To remember Midsummer Night's Dream
And a character called Puck
Played by a boy whose free will ran off luck
And helping him out through the blood sweat and tears
Was a sheltered shy poet who had his own fears
He lived in the shadow of his excelling brother
Through random room assignments these two boys found each other
Radio Free America has henceforth been ignited
By two odd-named boys with a satellite dish who felt they had been slighted
To the one who said "Carpe Diem" and got beat up for love
And the one who got the paddle after a telephone call from above
You cannot call them martyrs cause they are not the first
To experience pain at the hands of adults when they are at their worst
You need to know a man is not very tired- he's exhausted
If you argue otherwise, rest assured, you'll be accosted
It tells us you'll find a voice in this world like Todd Anderson
And not have to be silent in the corner like a flower bin
You have your own song to sing in life so make sure you let it be heard
There's no time like the present to let go of your words
That's what DPS teaches us whether it's '89 or '17
Poetry's a soulful language, and I think it's pretty keen
It rescues us all from the world we are trapped in
That's why I say, "Oh captain, my captain."
