Love is dying
I saw it today
In my best friend's eyes

He was in love with a girl in our grade
And she was in love with him
She still is, actually
But he doesn't know anymore; he isn't sure what he wants now
He gave up because he's afraid to make a mistake
And she's giving up
Because she's tired of waiting

And I know a boy
Who likes another girl I know
Whose name is ironically the same as mine
But I swear it's not me - it really is another girl
They were going to do a duet through our band
But she backed out

"Because," she said, "I can't put time into that right now."

And I know he took that a different way
Because the light that went off
When he said or heard her name?
I watched the bulb die
And he hasn't taken the time to put a new one in
He just left the dead one
As if to remind himself that it's not worth the time
To break out the stepstool and a new bulb
For her

But do you know why they didn't try before it was too late?
They were scared
They figured they would mess up beyond repair

One of those girls is still hung up
The other one moved on; in fact, I don't think she ever was "hung up" to begin with
Or at least not hung up on him

Love is dying
Fear is killing it
And we're just allowing it to happen
Love is dying
Out of fear
And nobody cares anymore
