17. Sita And Agni
**Meanings of words in italics and background of poem at the end**
Here I stand before you Agni
A thousand woes in my heart
Today you'll either be my destiny
Or my new start
When I started my journey, Agni
I was the very blessing from Mother Earth
I wasn't just a Rajkumari you know
In my pure integrity lay my worth
And then one day an arrow struck
A bullseye Agni, if you will
Two varamaalas and two hearts
And in the holiest matrimony I was sealed
And then fourteen years in a forest Agni
Because your only real home is your soul
And then a flight in the Pushpak Vimaan
Deceived by a false positive role
But my Lord will bring me back, Agni
Our bond is not only of love but also devotion
And then a seed of doubt grew into a poison ivy
So here I stand infront of you to clear myself of a false notion.
*Agni: fire
*Rajkumari: princess
*Varamaala: garland exchanged at
the time of marriage
*Pushpak Vimaan: the flying vehicle
of Raavana
Background: Sita is a goddess in Hindu mythology. She is the wife of Lord Ram, the king of Ayodhya. The following poem is set when Sita is asked to take an Agni Pariksha (walk through fire) to test if she is loyal and pure after she has been kidnapped by the King of Lanka, Raavan. Here, Sita is shown expressing her thoughts and her life to the fire, which she addresses as "Agni".
